World War 2 took place from September 1,1939-September 2, 1945. The United States entered the war after Pearl harbor was bombed by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. The US officially joined on December 8, 1941. President Franklin Roosevelt was the president at the time and was the one who entered us in the war. Tanks played a huge role in World War 2 for the US. The US has several tanks in their army and marines. Some tanks were more important than others and played bigger roles than others. Some of the more important tanks were the Sherman tank, the light tank, and the Chaffee tank. Tanks were a huge step for the US since we did not have our own in World War 1. One of the more important tanks was the M4 Sherman tank. It was the workhorse …show more content…
medium tank for the army and marine corps of the US in WW2. The Sherman fought in every theater operation. This tank was the ideal tank. It was roomy, easy to drive, and to repair. Most tanks ran on diesel. Diesel was a less flammable fuel. However the Sherman ran on a 400 horsepower gas engine. This making it a inferno when hit. It also carried ammo which made it even more explosive when being hit. The Sherman had decent fire power. It had a 75mm main gun and two additional guns that were a M1919 Browning .30 caliber machine gun and a Browning .50 caliber M2. Some Shermans even had flame throwers. These were deployed in the Pacific, against the Japanese. The Sherman tank remained in service after World War 2 and throughout the Korean war. Super Shermans were high modified Shermans and saw combat in the six day war on 1967 and in 1973 at the Yom Kippur War. Another important tank for the US in World War 2 was the M5A1 light tank.
During the 1930’s the US did not think tanks would be a relevant weapon on the battlefield. Because of this little research was known about tanks. They knew the basics. The M5A1 had the main principles of tanks. It has armor, firepower, and mobility. The M5A1 got the name “light tanka” because of its light armor. This was a major deficiency for a combat vehicle. This tank was equipped with four guns. A .30 caliber bow gun, .30 caliber coaxial machine gun, and 37 mm main gun and a .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine gun. A .30 caliber was originally going to be used for the anti-aircraft gun but the .50 caliber worked better. It had a two speed gear box coupled to two drive shafts from four speed transmission. This giving the tank eight speeds forward and two speeds in reverse. “The power plant is the 346 cu.in. flat head V8 engine, two of which are mounted in the rear of the vehicle, connected to 4 speed Hydramatic transmissions. Each engine generated 110 horsepower(http://www.robertsarmory.com/m5.htm).” Fuel was given to the engine by a two barrel Carter carburetor. There were thermal spring automatic chokes for when it was cold. The crew was a four man crew. There was a driver, assistant driver/bow gunner, main gunner, and commander/loader. They had a M6 periscope that was used in four locations in the front and one in the back making a total of five locations. The maximum speed was 36 mph. The front
armor was about 1.125 inches of steel. The Chaffee tank was introduced in the war in November of 1944 in France. It filled in for the M3 stuart tank. The main gun was a 75 mm and along with that was a .50 caliber Browning machine gun. The tracks and torsion bar were sixteen inches. It was supposed to give a smoother ride. It ran off twin Cadillac series 44T24 220 hp. It weighed 16.09 hp/ton. It was still vulnerable to German tanks even though it had thicker armor. The armor varied from 15-38 mm. This kept the crew a lot safer than the Stuart. The Chaffee tank first appeared in the Battle of the Bulge but the deployment was slow.
World War Warfare was one of the greatest examples of technological advancement and strategic challenge, with the introduction of inventions such as the aircraft and the tank the battlefield transformed from attrition as scene in the early years of the war to decisive by the end of the war.
World War 2 was a war that lasted from the 1st of September 1939 to the 2nd of September 1945. That’s 2 years longer than the first war. This war was started by Nazi Germany when they invaded Poland. This was the largest conflict in history that impacted every inch of the earth, including Canada.
The Weapons that the United States soldiers used was the M-16, which is a “gas operated, magazine-fed rifle that fired a .223 caliber round. It could also fire 700-900 rounds per minute while in fully auto mode. The M-16 also had a secondary attachment called the m-203 which could fire a grenade up to 400m with a 5m casualty radius” (Meyerson). The U.S. Soldiers also used the M-60 light machine gun that could be mounted on tanks and helicopters and used as an artillery weapon. They also used the “105 mm Howitzer that shot explosive shrapnel bombs that have a fire rate of 3 to 8 rounds a minute” (History.com). The Howitzer was also used like the M 60 machine gun by being mounted to tanks and helicopters. The U.S. Soldiers used the M-79 40mm also known as the thumper which looked like a sawed of shotgun. It could fire up to 300 meters and fired a 6.5, pound grenade. The M-72 is a BBMM light anti-tank weapon that weighed 5.2 pounds. It was also used as a bunker buster and fired a 1 kg rocket that could travel 300 meters. (173dairborne)” “The US army used many different types of helicopters like the HU-1A. It had a T53-6-5 motor, which put out 700horse power and could hold up to 8,500 pound...
New advances in technology changed warfare in WW2. The change in technology since WW1 has produced such things as Atom Bomb, and new and improved sea and air warfare. New techniques had to be used because of technology, techniques such as 'mouseholing'. More people were killed because of technology, as more people died in WW2 than WW1.The technological advances in WW2 changed the battlefield completely as more deadly auxiliary was introduced.
In 1937, Tucker had the idea of developing a combat vehicle. Two years later, he moved his family back to Michigan to develop new automotive products. Tucker received an opportunity from the Dutch government. The government wanted a combat vehicle that would work in the muddy Dutch land. He began to design an armored combat car, nicknamed “Tucker Tiger.” When the Germans invaded Holland, Tucker had not completed the vehicle. By then, the Dutch lost interest, so he offered it to the U.S. government. The combat car could go up to 115 mph, which was too fast for the government. They had already committed to other combat cars, and refused the car. However, the gun turret on the car took a place in the U.S. Navy and was soon used in many of the ships.
It all started on December 7th, 1941. America had entered their Second World War following the Pearl Harbor attacks. America started its Pacific Campaign against the Imperial Japanese Army. After three years, America joined with fellow allied nations and invaded Nazi- Occupied France codename Operation Overlord. This was the biggest amphibious invasion ever recorded. From Pearl Harbor to the fall of Berlin in the spring of 1945, the American bomber plane helped defeat the Nazi regime, end the war in the Pacific, and revolutionize modern warfare.

America’s entry into World War II had an importance to America after the war. The United States involvement in the war was long and took a toll on everyone in the war. The military of the U.S. was the deciding factor in World War II. The United States grew militarily and economically because of the war. Finally stopping the Great Depression and bringing on jobs for everyone including women, colored people and the fighters of the war.
First, the movie brought the real Sherman tank to life by incorporating its realistic design. The Sherman tank was one of the American tanks utilized during World War II. It was known for its thin armor and mobility. It was an inexpensive tank which was produced in abundances. The tank had a 75-millimeter gun, two machine guns, and a turret. One
...ilities of the tanks being penetrated were slim. Also there was an addition of an anti-craft gun which made it even more powerful and unstoppable (Slayton 103).
In World War I, tanks first appeared at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette in September 1916. It was the first time tanks had ever been used in a military conflict. Although most tanks in WWI could not exceed 4 miles per hour, they still played an extremely important role as they increased mobility on the Western Front and eventually broke the stalemate of trench warfare. Artillery and machine guns were particularly effective against the main form of offense: the infantry units. As a result, “the defense was stronger than just about anything that could be thrown against it, so much so that infantrymen spent most of their time cowering in trenches and bunkers” (Mizokami). When the infantry did attack, they would often surpass their supporting machine
Technology changed during World War II , things like planes were made even more deadly. During World War II , the United States became involved in the war because of the Japanese attack called Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were then punished for their actions in Pearl Harbor by atomic bombs. The U.S. officially joined World War II after the Pearl Harbor attack. The role of aircraft in World War II is significant because of the planes and pilots that attacked Pearl Harbor, battles involving planes, and the United States Air Force.
Throughout the course of World war II there would a production of hundreds of thousands of tanks manufactured for the conflict for the U.S. alone. This was the main striking force for an armored unit during World War II. These tracked behemoths were designed to be used as the ultimate armored weapon, and king of the modern battlefield. The crews who controlled these tanks came from every part of America. To many soldiers during the second World War these Americans were known as the Armored Calvary or Tankmen, but they referred to themselves simply as tankers. Being a tanker meant the adaptation of harsh battlefield conditions and a series of imperfect machines. In America, tank development following World War I had been severely hindered due
