Shel Silverstein is one of the highest selling children's authors. Silverstein was best known for his works as a poet, songwriter and singer, cartoonist, and musician. Sheldon Allan Silverstein was born to Nathan and Helen Silverstein. He was married one time which later ended in a divorce. Within that marriage he had a daughter, however, his daughter later passed away at the age of 11. Another thing about Shel Silverstein is he didn’t originally began writing children's books. Shel Silverstein had many influences in his early life that led him to being such a great poet. First he was born September 25, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois (Shel Silverstein Biography Bio.com). At the young age of 12 years old was on Shel Silverstein took up drawing (Shel Silverstein Life & Timeline). He completed high school at Roosevelt High School in the year 1948, and he later went on to began college at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts(Shel Silverstein Life & Timeline). Also he went on to Roosevelt University soon dropping out to enlist in the Army (Shel Silverstein Life & Timeline). When he was growing up he did not have a poet to look up to therefore he did not have a poet to develop a style from. Silverstein work appears to have a much deeper meaning than can be seen on the surface. Some scholars even say that his work can be harmful to children. Also silverstein was writing as a cartoonist for playboy when his friend Ursula Nordstom influenced him to begin writing children's poems. However not only is he a writer and illustrator, but he is also a well known songwriter. All in all, Silverstein's unique style of writing is very entertaining and fun to read and
