Shay looks around Los Angeles a little more then decides to call Twist. When she finishes calling Twist, she walks to the hotel he owns where she meets Cade and Cruz. Everyone in the hotel sticks up for Shay and begins attacking Singular’s men, driving them out of the hotel. Twist, Shay, Cruz, and Cade leave for Hollywood. They stay at Twist’s friend’s house deciding to contact West and tell him that they will upload a video of Singular’s experiments on people if they do not hand over Odin within twenty four
hours. While waiting for Singular to give Odin back, Shay, Cruz, Cade, and Twist go to prove they aren’t bluffing. To prove this they go to the Hollywood sign in the middle of the night and start to hang letters on it to spell out mindkill.com. On mindkill.com Twist, Shay, Cruz, and Cade posted a picture of a man with a silver bowl that had electronic ports in it. The picture was taken from one of the video’s on the hard drive. Once Singular doesn’t give Odin back Shay, Twist, Cade and Cruz find West and tell him what’s happening. West immediately agree’s to help break into Singular’s lab in Sacramento and rescue Odin. When West, Shay, Twist, Cruz, and Cade get into the facility they find Odin and four other prisoners. Odin refuses to leave until they break out the girl in the cell across from him. Shay and Cruz get the door to the girls cell open and notice that Singular had put wires in her brain. Cautiously they move the girl to the van with Odin, but as they go to leave someone shoots West. Shay has Cruz take the girl to the van while she stays and tries to help West. After Cruz takes the girl to the van he comes back and tells Shay they have to leave. Shay refuses to leave West and Cruz has to carry her out to the van. Once Cruz returns to the van with Shay they all leave to a nearby town and get a hotel room. In the hotel room they cut the girl’s chains off and start to question her. They find out her name is Fenfang and ask her what she knows about Singular. The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
