Based on my observations, my first impression of my English class is that it will be exciting. On the first day of school, I was intrigued by Ms. Shaw-Morgan’s sense of humor since none of my elementary school teachers joked around as much as her. Ms. Shaw Morgan is very funny and her classroom is organized and well-decorated. It is my first year at Canyon Hills and having an exciting class will make the experience more enjoyable. I hope this class lives up to my expectations. To begin, Ms. Shaw-Morgan is hilarious. When I first walked into her classroom, I looked around and saw the meme wall. I thought it was unique because usually teachers only have posters with helpful tips of the subject they are teaching, but she added humor to her classroom. In addition to the funny memes, Ms. Shaw-Morgan is always making sarcastic jokes, which I love. For example, when the class is loud, she says, “Thanks for being quiet.” Another thing I enjoy about the class is whenever she jokingly teases a student, Ms. Shaw-Morgan offers them candy from her candy jar. As the students open the jar, a song plays and she dances to the song. In fact, she even dabbed one time and the whole class erupted with laughter. For all these reasons, it is clear to see that Ms. Shaw-Morgan has a great sense of humor. …show more content…
Shaw-Morgan’s classroom is well-decorated. As I mentioned before, she has a mem wall but also many other decorations on her walls. To illustrate, Ms. Shaw-Morgan has quotes hung up around the classroom. I think quotes are a wonderful thing to have because sometimes they inspire people. Along with memes and quotes, there are posters with helpful writing tips. These are very convenient because if I ever need help with writing, the posters can guide me with my work. Posters of rules can also be found in the classroom. These are a reminder to students who misbehave in class. It is easy to understand that Ms. Shaw-Morgan has done an amazing job decorating her
In Donald M. Murrays’s essay “What is Practical Education” he explains his reasoning behind why he allowed his students to write badly. He shares his own experience with police-like teachers who drove him to hate writing. In hopes of helping his students find their voice he allows his students to write the words down as they come, no matter how awkward they sound. Often times they find out that they have more to say then they thought. Rhetorical devices are used to help the readers relate to his point of view on writing.
...out homework, which was a huge stress relief. The class also offered how to write the base foundation of any paper, which is significant to become a great writer as well as to write a flawless paper. Also, the group activities allowed us to get closer with our classmates. However, I feel like some of the activities we did were mediocre and ordinary. But it is hard to tell what experience each student received from their high school. Some knew more than others, and I was just more grateful with the education I obtained from high school. I was also not fond of buying the books for the class, when it was not a necessity for class. We did not put much use into the books, and they were relatively expensive. I do recommend the class, especially to incoming freshman. It is a great foundation for legitimate college writing classes. I enjoyed learning from you Mrs. Penwell.
The main strength in the essay comes from her use of personal examples. Her main personal example regards her son’s English teacher threatening to fail him because he was not putting in any effort into his work; because he was afraid of being flunked, it motivated him to work even harder. Through the use of personal examples Sherry has the strength of overall clarity of the essay. Her personal examples provide clarity in how threatening to flunk students should be used as a teaching tool along with stopping teachers being able to pass along students because they do not cause any disruptions allows the reader to follow her
Happy New Year and the second semester of the school year. The first semester was a test on how students would blend into the new academics. Honors English was a great choice I made in middle school and I would recommend it to any incoming freshman. I have learned new ways to create claims and the proper way to set up paragraphs. Learning the way to set up paragraphs has improved my writing skills, even out of the english classroom. English comes in handy in the World Geography classroom as I have learned and may be useful in the future.
In conclusion, my first impression was wrong, the classroom was not some kind of battlefield of teacher and student casualties. The students were not a lost cause that I imagine them to be. The students were well mannered and just wanted to be treated with respect. The classroom management was impeccable and astounding. It goes to show that although you may think you know a group of students you can be very mistaken.
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
In the front of a fourth-grade classroom, there sits the ever-smiling face of a little girl. Each morning, this girl is the first to class, dressed neatly and appropriately, with a backpack full of supplies in order for her to be successful in the classroom. Her homework is always finished, and her parents always make sure she is doing her reading, and trying for excellent grades. The constant efforts of the child in the classroom, and her perpetual kindness to all of her peers has persuaded the teacher into being impressed with the little girl’s work this year. She decides, along with her fellow faculty, to award the child a certificate stating she is the Student of the Month. The child barely makes it through the bus ride home due to
Each year, as a new group of students enter my classroom, I will encourage them to be expressive of their imaginations in their favorite subjects, whether it be art, literature, math or music. We all have rules and regulations to follow, and each student will know that there is no exception in the school or the classroom. Another goal in my classroom will be to keep the students excited about learning, not to treat school as a game or a social event, but to encourage a unique and fun atmosphere to learn. My educational ethics toward each student will be to emphasise that everyone is an individual, they are all special and unique in their own way, and that every student does not learn on the same level. I hope my students will treat each other the way they want to be treated, and respect those that may be less fortunate.
Mr. Sneller had a unique relationship with his students. Immediately, as I walked into the room I was overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the class. Adorning the walls were trinkets from all over the world. The desks were arranged in groups of L-shapes, so that students could both direct their attention to the front of the classroom and be attentive to each other. All of these contribute to the roles that were presented of the teacher and his students. The students saw Mr. Sneller as their friend, whom they joked with, laughed with, but also respected. Consequently, Mr. Sneller shared this relationship with his students. He described to me the joy he found in teaching families year after year and the special bond he made with students that allowed him to ‘joke’ with them more. It was because of Mr. Sneller’s view of his students, the idea that he was their friend helping them along their journey that he was able to treasure each individual student for who they already were whe...
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. Writing is an everlasting skill that will be an enormous asset to me; in addition to my future classes, and my career as
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was, and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This, combined with general apprehension about college life, left me terrified.
There is a bulletin board on which the teachers have displayed all students written work. Displaying students work on a bulletin board sends message that the teachers value student’s work. Displaying student’s work encourages students to learn. It tells them that its ok to be messy and that the mistakes are part of learning. Along on the bulletin board, students’ names are displayed on the classroom door and on other work is displayed on the classroom’ closet doors.
I started my 10th grade year in Ms. Rolle’s class off on the right note, I’d say. I thought it’ll be like my freshman year in English, very lenient, nice, and basically a teacher who doesn’t give an overload of work. But of course, I was wrong. She’s actually the opposite.
The writing class session I observed is a packaged program in which the students have been participating in for 5 months. They all know the routine of the reading and writing workshop and understand “the Daily 5.” The student’s movements are purposeful and there is little time wasted in transitions. The books used by students become more complicated as the students ability strengthens. At the end of the workshop, Mrs. Rammond praised those students who used their time efficiently during “the Daily 5.” She spoke directly to the students who wrote in their journals and asked them to share their entries. The students learned some new trivia about insects, practiced writing and then had some time for art.
