According to the web page “Wayne Gretzky Biography”, Wayne was born in Brantford, Ontario on January 26, 1961. His parents, Phyllis and Walter Gretzky, had four other children: Keith, Glen, Brent, and Kim Gretzky (Zoll 1). Wayne was the eldest of five, and took interest in hockey at a young age, sparked by his father’s love for hockey. When Wayne turned six, his father constructed an ice rink in his backyard. The construction of this rink greatly helped Wayne in his early career as a hockey player, because it allowed him to practice daily. Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would

Modern Day Olympics are a huge tradition that sweeps the screens of televisions across the world. Competitors take the arena with uniforms that dawn their countries colors and designs that are meant to resemble their designated flag. For months the news is centered around the games; the preparation, the athletes, and of course the competition. Countries aren 't obsessed, they are inspired and full of pride seeing athletes from their country compete and show their incredible skill. This tradition dates back to ancient Greece where the games began. Tony Perrottet writes about the traditions of the ancient game in his book The Naked Olympics.
Jake Burton Carpenter invented the first practical snowboard. As a youngster, he had always wanted to surf, but his parents would not buy him a surfboard. Coupled with his desire to be cool, Carpenter worked hard and saved his money and bought a snurfer. He modified Burton’s design. His board looked more like an oversized skateboard with waterski bindings. This gave the rider more control over the board. This was the start of modern day snowboarding. Ancient Olympics The ancient Olympics had some differences from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Women where not allowed to even watch the games on penalty of death let alone play in them.. Also, the games were always held at Olympia in Greece instead of being moved around to different sites every time. But also they had some similarities to our modern Olympics, winning athletes were heroes who put their home towns on the map, and became financially sound for life. The conflict between the Olympic's ideals of sportsmanship and unity and the commercialism and political acts which accompany the Games where also present in ancient times. "Sotades at the ninety-ninth Festival was victorious in the long race and proclaimed a Cretan, as in fact he was. But at the next Festival he made himself an Ephesian, being bribed to do so by the Ephesian people. For this act he was banished by the Cretans."
