On 10 June 1990, a mechanic of British Airway Flight 5390 installed retention bolts that were 0.1 inches smaller than the required bolt size. He installed smaller bolts based on his experience because he was lazy to look at the service manual. As a result, the left windscreen on captain’s side blew, while dragging the captain halfway out of the plane. The captain was left hanging in the window for 20 minutes and he suffered multiple injuries. Laziness is one of the greatest enemies of humans. Many people have attempted to show the impact of laziness in various forms of entertainment likes movies, television, sports etc. One such movie was Shaun of the Dead, which shows a story of survival in a zombie apocalypse. on the themes associated in Shaun of the Dead.
According to Kim Edwards, one such theme in Shaun of the Dead is, “a satirical social commentary on the drudgeries of modern life and a witty validation of the sedentary lifestyles of young males refusing to grow up” (Edwards 99). Edward argues that Shaun of the Dead is criticizing the laziness in modern lifestyle among the young growing males. However, laziness in Shaun of the Dead can be interpreted differently. The lazy attitude of the two main characters, Shaun and Ed, creates humor in the film, ultimately, leading to a delay in understanding of a critical situation. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, laziness is defined as not liking to work hard and be active. The lazy attitude of the main characters is introduced very early into the film. The scene succeeding the opening sequel speaks highly of both Ed and Shaun’s character. The scene begins in the morning where Ed is sitting on a couch with a video game controller in his hand and with his foot placed on top of a table. Usually, adults don’t play video games in the morning because morning is a symbolism of work and education for majority of the adults. Ed playing video games in the morning implies that he doesn’t work (which is later confirmed by Pete). Additionally, there are a lot of cans and plastic wrapper on the table, there is a pizza box underneath the table and there is a trash can that is flipped on side with all of its garbage coming out of it. All of this evidence implies that the individuals living in the house are very lazy to clean their mess. A few minutes later, Pete, Shaun’s other roommate, is trying to convince Ed to do some household chores; meanwhile, Ed is ignoring his words and is totally focused on his video game. The audience may infer this scene to be funny because for few last minutes Shaun has been trying to talk to Ed about his behavior and lack of work, but he couldn’t speak to Ed. After speaking with Ed, Shaun’s roommate leaves the room and there is a paper hanging on his back stating, “I am a prick”. The audience might perceive this scene to be funny. This is extremely important because Pete’s conversation with Ed is kind of putting emphasis on the importance of being active (work), however, Ed’s humor prevents him from grasping this important concept. After some time, there is a zombie apocalypse in the movie.
During this zombie apocalypse, there are many instances in which Shaun and Ed show their lazy attitude, which leads to a formation of humor in audience’s mind. A perfect example of this is the scene when Shaun walks to the convenient stores from his house. The scene begins with Shaun waking up from a hangover. The first thing that Shaun sees is a white board which has things written on them, “Go round mums, get Liz back, sort life out”. This is humorous because Shaun (whom the audience considers to be a sluggish person) has made a resolution of things that he needs to accomplish. People often make resolution after realizing their mistakes and to improve themselves. However, things that Shaun has written were suggestions given to him by his friends and family. Pete told him to sort his life out, Philip told him to go round mums and David told him to get Liz back. This supports the idea that Shaun cannot even make right decision for his life because he has to be reminded about things to do in his life. This dependence on others for making decisions in his life, has delayed Shaun’s ability to make rational decisions for
himself. After Shaun wakes up, he leaves his house to get his breakfast from the convenient store. During his route to the store, he sees there is trash everywhere outside the convenient store and he isn’t suspicious about it. Furthermore, as walks into to the store, he walks directly to the soda refrigerator. He opens the refrigerator and grabs a Coke, without even noticing two bloody handprints on the glass. As he walks towards the checkout counter, he slips (possibly on the blood) and he doesn’t even bother to look down. There are multiple inferences that can be made from this scene. Firstly, majority of the audience may infer this scene to be scary because blood on any object is a connotation of a crime and violence in society. Additionally, the audience may have realized that zombie apocalypse has begun and they might be thinking, “What the heck is Shaun doing”. However, Dirk Eitzen, the director of Film and Media studies program at Franklin and Marshall College, suggests that this scene is funny. He states, “I find it funny that Shaun slips in the grocery store just because he seems so clumsy and clueless” (Eitzen 5). Eitzen argues that he finds the scene funny because of Shaun’s clumsiness (which mostly arises due to Shaun’s laziness). Furthermore, audience can infer this scene to be funny because clumsiness often leads to embarrassing and socially awkward events, which often tend to be funny (Eitzen 5). This humor, which arises partly due to Shaun’s lazy attitude, hinders him from understanding that zombies have taken over the city and they are attacking everyone. After Shaun leaves the convenient stores, he walks back to his house. After he reaches his house, he turns on his television. He doesn’t pay any close attention to any channel especially news channel because the news channels are informing everyone in the city about the zombie apocalypse. This small scene attempts to create another lazy humor moment in audience’s mind because even though he is just scrambling through channels, the message of zombie apocalypse is still conveyed by combining all the words from previous channels. Yet, Shaun doesn’t realize the severity of the problem because those zombies can kill him at any moment, if he doesn’t take proper safety measure. In conclusion, laziness may seems to be playing a role in criticizing the modern mundane lifestyle; however, laziness leads to formation of humor, ultimately, delays the understanding of a critical situation.
As an electronics salesman in his late twenties, Shaun doesn’t have much to brag about in life. He drinks at the same pub everyday with the same friend and has the same relationship issues with his girlfriend that they’ve had for years. In the early scenes of the film, Shaun fails to maintain this relationship and Liz dumps him. He then ends up at his local pub and again, drinks himself under the table. Shaun’s character represents the status quo that so many people are a part of; t...
...r can not be satisfied. The zombie is a consumer. Zombies are most often used as a metaphor these days for uncontrollable consumerism that plagues our generation. We blindly buy without thinking, either because of a low price, lust, or simply we just want more. We are guilty of “Zombie Consumerism”. Zombie consumerism is evident in George Romeros' film, Dawn of the Dead. In this movie, a shopping mall is where the characters take refuge and becomes the setting in which the humans stay in the battle of the zombies. They gorge themselves in free food and are delighted about having almost everything at their fingertips all to themselves. It sound's perfect. They can consume anything they want and they will be okay, forever. It is ironic then when there is nothing left and they must find new sources of shelter and food and resources, or become the resources themselves.
For my final essay, I have chosen the movie “Fatal Attraction”, and I will focus on Alex Forrest and her mental disorder. Borderline Personality was displayed in the movie and Alex had almost every symptom of this disorder. Throughout this essay, I will be discussing Alex’s characteristics, intelligence, motivation, stress, social influences and/ or personality theories, treatment, and if the depiction of the disorder and treatment is consistent with what was discussed and read in the course.
Ken Kesey's award-winning novel, "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", was adapted into a film in 1975 written and directed by New York City native Bo Goldman and Czech director Milos Forman. Towards the end of the novel and film, Chief Bromden escapes from the ward. This scene is conveyed differently in the novel and film; however, there are evident similarities between each form of media. This scene is important to the plot because it wraps up the entire storyline. In the film and novel, similarities within Chief Bromden’s escape from the ward include the way Chief escaped, how he couldn't hear anyone in the ward due to being deaf, and how McMurphy assisted Bromden with gaining his confidence to lift the panel and throw it through the window. McMurphy essentially changed Bromden to help him break out of the asylum and back into the real world.
Amy Heckerling’s movie Clueless focuses on an upper middle class 16-year-old girl, Cher, who lives in a nice neighborhood with her father and stepbrother, Josh. Cher and her friend, Dionne, take in a new girl, Tai, to help her fit into their high school. All of the major characters in the movie are in adolescence, which ranges from 10-19 years of age. In adolescence, teenagers undergo cognitive and emotional development. According to Piaget’s cognitive developmental theory, adolescents are in formal operational period from 11-20 years of age. During this period, adolescents develop abstract thinking and rational decision making. They experience two aspects of adolescent egocentrism, imaginary audience
Night of the Living Dead is an iconic horror movie released in 1968 in America. The movie was directed by George Romero and premiered on October 1st of the same year. The movie follows the characters of Barbra and Ben and five other characters trapped in a rustic farmhouse in a rural town in Pennsylvania. The farmhouse is attacked by a large group of non-living human beings which are not named. They have characterized features of a monster and of a corpse. In the onset of the film, the main character Barbra and her brother Johnny drive to a town in Pennsylvania for a customary visit to the father’s grave. When in the cemetery, Barbra and Johnny encounter a peculiar looking man who had been walking around the cemetery. Fear overcomes Barbara as the deranged man walks towards her and proceeds to aggressively attack her. While trying to rescue his sister, Johnny is thrown into a gravestone and succumbs to his demise. After this occurrence, Barbra decides to escape in a car which gets involved in a mishap. This forces her to escape on foot and subsequently leads her to a farmhouse. Later, the news reports to the
In Night of the Living Dead, the zombies were eventually eliminated. Or were they? Theorists argue that the monster’s elusiveness is due to its physical, psychological and social characteristics that cross the lines of classification. Human’s innate fear of the unknown is due to their inability to make a distinction or draw a clear conclusion. This is explained further in Jeffrey Cohen’s second thesis in “Monster Theory” that claims that; “the monster never escapes” (Cohen, 14). The zombie as a monster can never be destroyed completely and if it is, it leaves a remnant the make people feel uncertain of its destruction. Base on Cohen’s theory, the zombie’s different interpretation allows it to emerge in other forms (a faster, smarter zombie?)
The Bad and The Beautiful (1952) and State and Main (2000) are films within films that unmask Hollywood Cinema as a dream factory and expose the grotesque, veneer hidden by the luxury of stars. The Bad and the Beautiful, directed by Vincent Minnelli, is a black and white film narrated in flashback form. The films theatrical nature requires more close-ups than wide-screen shots to capture the character’s psychological turmoil. For example, Fred and Jonathan’s car ride is captured in a close-up to signify their friendship; however their relationship deteriorates after Jonathan’s deceit. While the camera zooms out, Fred stands alone motionless. Here, Fred is captured from a distance at eye-level and he becomes ostracized by the film industry and

“The Mission” is based on a true story that occurred around the borderlands of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil in the years 1750’s according to the film and history. The Treaty of Madrid of 1750 with the Spanish and Portuguese caused both havoc and death for the people of the Guarini and the members of the Jesuits. The Jesuits, members of the church, tried to bring Christianity and civilization to the natives while keeping at peace with Spain and Portugal. The Jesuits were the teachers for the natives; Teaching them not only the Christian religion but also civilization. Father Gabriel, a Jesuit, is first introduced in the film when he is showing his respects to a former Jesuit priest killed by the natives. He walks through the South American

Deadpool was originally a supervillain who had a superhuman healing factor that regenerates damaged or destroyed areas of his structure quickly. He went into a chamber to gain this superpower and turned good rather than evil.
The movie Deadpool is written by Paul Whitreck and directed by Tim Miller. The movie is about a man named Wade Wilson who underwent an experiment to help cure his cancer. In doing so the experiment went wrong and he gained accelerating healing powers which messed his face up. However he received his name from a scene early in the movie when he was in the bar. The movie went back in forth as far as memories but Wade wilson named himself Deadpool based on how he looked and the condition he was in. He gains new abilities and is on a search for the person that nearly killed him during the experiment. The movie is a reintegration of the comic books by marvel of this alter ego killer, not your typical friendly superhero. Deadpool is one of my favorite movies because of the level of action/violence, the sound effects/special effect and the good acting in the movie.
Love is a word that’s been both miss-used and over-used all at once. Romantic movies change our definition of and have a big impact on this definition greatly. There have been many movies and novels made over love, but never like this. “The Notebook” is a love story about unconditional love that two people have for each other. This emotionally, heart touching story will have your eyes blood-shot and burning from you not wanting to blink your eyes. This tremendously wonderful love story will have you not wanting to even miss a millisecond of this heart throbbing film. With many plot twists and many scenes that will have you falling off of your seat and you not having any nails by the end of the movie, this is the movie for you. This emotionally rich film is full of action, laughter, and romance, which is the perfect trio combination. This movie shows us how love can bind us together forever. This film went above and
The movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, portrayals its dominant ideology sexuality through the story between two main characters: a female literature student named Anastasia Steele, and a young male billionaire Christian Grey. In this movie, it indicates strong traditional heterosexuality, and it reflects the gender roles about submission and dominance, which leads to gender inequality through misinformation. Although entertaining and refreshing, this movie brings more negative impacts more than positive ones.
