It is way too often that we hear about children getting abused by someone who is meant to protect them; that someone can be a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or an uncle. The abuse can be in many forms; mental, physical or emotional; it can be a combination of or all of these. This paper is about the abuse and torture of a young boy. This paper will tell how this case came to the attention of the authorities and discuss the crime, and who was accused, prosecuted and ultimately convicted of the abuse.
Everyday adults have to make decisions; either for their work or their personal life, but how many people have to make a decision that could mean life or death for someone they know. A family friend who was living with Sharon Glass and Michael Marshall would have to do just that. While living at the house he noticed the child who wore baggy clothes was awfully thin and when he hugged him he felt just bones.
On March 15, 2012 he chose to call detectives and describe the living conditions in the house. Titusville detectives went to the house on Barna Ave. to investigate these allegations. One can only imagine the thoughts going through the minds of the detectives when they opened a locked bathroom door and saw an emaciated little boy lying on the floor. The couple, according to Greg Pallone a reporter for Channel 13 News, was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse, and one charge of aggravated child neglect (2014). The children (ages 10, 12, and 15) where put into the custody of The Department Children and Families.
On January 07, 2014 a jury of 4 women and 2 men began the daunting task of listening to testimony from the state and prosecution. A former teacher of the boy told the court that , “She warned DCF and t...

The Father, Michael Marshall will be in court at the end of January. He has been offered a tentative plea deal of 40 years in prison (Billow, 2014).

While reading the semi-autobiographical, Bastard Out of Carolina, by Dorothy Allison, I was stunned by the explicit nature of the novel. We were introduced to a young narrator and protagonist named, Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright. Bone's family, like that of the author, experienced a impoverished life, all the while she tried to find her place in a society that had literally labeled her “illegitimate.” Merriam-Webster defines illegitimate as being: (1) not recognized as lawful offspring; specifically: born of parents not married to each other (2) not rightly deduced or inferred- illogical (3) departing for the regular- erratic (4) not sanctioned by law- illegal (5) not authorized by good usage. As a young girl, how would it feel being known as illogical, erratic, illegal, not for good usage, and, in Bone's case, being constantly reminded of not knowing the identity of your birth father? According to helpguide.org, a non-profit online resource for mental health, the article “Child Abuse & Neglect” addressed how constantly being told you are stupid or no good, as a child, is very difficult to overcome. You may accept these negative thoughts and believe them to be reality. In this research paper, I am looking to unveil the truth of child abuse by focusing on the history, myths, and victim rehabilitation of child abuse.
As the one juror that felt the boy was innocent continued to try and convince the others that there was a chance that they could all be wrong, most all of the jurors were starting to see the possibility. Every time there was a new reason why he could be innocent, each juror had more to think about. Finally, the argument about the glasses swayed everyone just enough to withdrawal the guilty verdict and set the boy free.
To support their conclusion the board tells the story of two men who were exonerated after spending thirty years in prison for a crime they did not commit. Days after the rape and murder of eleven year old Sabrina Buie, half-brothers Henry Lee McCollum and Leon Brown confessed to the crime. Not only were their confessions made under pressure without parents or an attorney present, but the prosecution failed to present multiple pieces of evidence to the defense lawyers, DNA evidence that proved McCollum and Brown were not responsible for the murder. In fact, the DNA belonged to a Roscoe Artis, who was a suspect all along and was convicted of a similar crime just weeks later.

In the story, A Child Called It, by Dave Pelzer narrates his traumatic childhood abuse through the lenses of a mere ten year old child. The book accounts of terrifying, disturbing tortures inflicted on a young boy who is starved, stabbed, smashed face first into mirrors, forced to eat crap from his brother’s diaper, forced to drink ammonia/chlorine, and burned over a stove by an alcoholic, insane mother. Dave is the oldest of his brothers and the only one to receive abuse from his mother. The abuse started as Dave was four years old with minimum punishment and quickly escalated to life threatening punishments as the years passed. The punishments grew to physical and emotional abuse and neglect from his mother. The neglect escalates to rarely
Child abuse is an extremely sensitive subject to many people. But to many people from McMartin Preschool, it is something that will stick with them forever. According to The World Book Encyclopedia, child abuse is “a term that generally refers to mistreatment of a child by a parent of another adult” (Zigler). It could also be “limited to life-threatening physical violence, including severe beating, burns, and strangulation” (Zigler). The horrific McMartin Preschool Trial was crazy and disgusting, leaving children scarred, parents angry, and the accused wronged.

Ritual abuse is an extreme, sadistic form of abuse of children and non-consenting adults. The abusers of innocent children hold no mercy as they psychologically, physically, and emotionally torture their victims to do their bidding. When the victims are finally set free, they are forbidden to talk about what happens to them in fear that they, or their family, will be killed. Ritual abuse occurs within every region of our country, (MacDonald & Sarson, 2002); this paper will present concrete statistics to substantiate this statement. This paper will also explain what ritual abuse is and provide background information, explain why it happens, and the effects it has on victims.
The mistreatment of children is classified by four types of actions: physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect. Although, in recent years several steps have been taken to prevent the maltreatment of children it seems that child abuse is still prevalent in today's society. Countless children around the world suffer from some form of abuse and in many cases the same child experiences more than one. There is no exact number of victims because it difficult to measure the exact amount of children going through abuse. Child abuse almost always occurs in private, and because abuse is often hidden from view and its victims may be too young or too frightened to speak out, experts in child welfare suggest that its true prevalence
This paper addresses the long term and short term consequences of child abuse and the different treatments to work with traumas that come along this action. Different approaches to work with child abuse and the effectiveness of treatment with children are discussed. The definition of child maltreatment, its causes, and factors are also detailed.
The physical abuse of children covers a wide range of actions from what some might term ‘justifiable chastisement’ such as slapping or spanning to the sort of actions which most would agree constitute deliberate, sadistic cruelty against children.
