REPORTER: The reporter/maternal great grandmother (Sherry) called to report abuse and neglect for the victims, Zane and Abrie. According to Sherry (reporter), Shalana hits Zane and whoops him a lot (unknown when). Shalana slapped him in the mouth (unknown when or how often). It is unknown if there were any visible marks or bruises because “she stays away for days”. The reporter said Shalana hits Abrie on her legs, unknown visible marks or bruises. When the child gets on Shalana’s nerves or when other people agitate her she hit Abrie, according to Sherry (reporter). The reporter said Shalana is punishing Zane by not allowing him to see his grandmother (Sherry Johnson). The reporter said “it is unknown if the children are being fed regularly”.
Shalana applied for food stamps, but it is unknown if she has food. The reporter said, 1 month ago, she went to the house and saw that they only had cookies and crackers to eat. The reporter said Shalana is not going to allow the grandmother (Sherry Johnson) to see the children, due to her making the report.

The goal of a social worker is to improve the quality of life for all individuals and if one learns about any type of abuse-physical, sexual, emotional, and/or neglect- it is their responsibility to bring this information to the proper authorities. David suffered physical, mental, and emotional abuse from the age of four to 12-years-old. As his teachers and principal, neighbors, and even his maternal grandmother and father stand by and let the abuse happen, it makes me wonder what they could have done differently. For example, David’s father saw the abuse firsthand and he would try to intervene to help him out initially. David’s father was caught by the madness of his wife in calling him, ‘the boy’ and ‘It’. As much as his father tried to comfort David, he did not have the will to stand up against his wife. Another example, the maternal grandmother commented on bruises visible on David’s body and she did not take action to report her daughter for abusing her grandchild, David. Instead, David’s grandmother stated that she should stay out of it and let David’s mother raise her children as she saw fit. I believed the unreported instances observed by the public to be just as substantial a crime as the child abusers themselves. Also, the Department of Children and Social Services were contacted because of the alleged child abuse events that occurred previously; however, he was not taken from the home because the social worker of the agency sided with David’s mother. R/s Ja’Mya stated that her dad was mad because she pushed her sister down, so her dad spanked her and hit her in the head with the belt. R/s she asked to nurse to look at the child’s head and the nurse said there is slight abuse near the hair line. In the article, “In Death, Florida Family Reveals a Spiral of Domestic Abuse,” the children portrayed in this story had shown many of the signs listed above, and yet, no one intervened. Lizette Alvarez and Frances Robles wrote about the horrific abuse that had plagued the whole household in a small Florida town. In Bell, Florida a woman by the name of Sarah Spirit, 28 years of age would constantly call the police on her father who she claimed was brutally violent and that she was terrified of him. The uniqueness about this story is that the abuse was not between a husband and wife, it was between a father and daughter and her six children. However, as stated previously, domestic violence can be any form of abuse between two people in the household.

Commonly referred to as the ‘honour killings’ of the Shafia family is a murder plot that resulted in the death of three young female teenagers and their aunt (Maclean’s 2017). The murder was perpetrated by Mohammad Shafia, his wife and their oldest son. The three teenage sisters were killed due to their rebellion against their family’s traditions. The fourth victim was Rona Mohammad, who was referred to a collateral damage by the offenders (Maclean’s 2017). The police investigation lead to the three offenders all being found guilty on four counts of murder in the first degree (Chung and Dimanno 2012). The two theories this essay will discuss to explain why these murders occurred are one of Sykes and Matza’s techniques of neutralization, the denial of the victim, and the theory of Psychopathy (Broll 2017). The theories illustrate how Mohammad’s mentality, beliefs, and behaviour became factors that resulted in the crime. This essay will demonstrate how Mohammad Shafia’s corrupt notions of honour lead to one of Sykes and Matza’s techniques of neutralization and how his psychopathic personality indicative of his lack of guilt, aggressive behaviour and failure to conform to societal norms resulted in the heinous Shafia family murders.
