For this Latin American research assignment, I have chosen to do it over Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, or as we know her, Shakira. Shakira was born and raised in Barranquilla, Columbia on February 2, 1977, by her mother and father. Her name means “grateful” or “full of grace” in Arabic. Her father is of Lebanese decent, and her mother is Columbian. In all of the songs that Shakira sings, she honors both her Latino and Arabic heritage. Shakira started writing songs at the age of 8. Once she wrote enough songs to get her name out there, she was able to sign her first record deal at the age of 13. Shakira’s first two albums were complete misses and had no success at all; Magia in 1991 and Peligro in 1993. She took a break from music for a little …show more content…
She very quickly was able to write and produce 60 songs, some in English and some in Spanish. She released a Spanish album in June of 2005 called “Fijacian Oral, Vol. 1” and an English version of the same album in November called “Fijacion Oral, Vol. 2”. Both albums became number 4 and 5 on the charts respectively. Once sales on these albums started to slow, her new record label Epic, released a bonus track on the album. This track was called “Hips Don’t Lie”. It became popular very quickly and became one of Summer 2006’s biggest hits. This also revived the album sales as well as Shakira’s name and popularity. By this time in 2006, Forbes magazine has estimated Shakira to be worth $38 million. In 2007 Shakira took a break from writing music briefly. She decided to attend The University of California, Los Angeles, as a summer school student. She took a History of Western Civilizations course while attending. According to the India Times, Shakira attended classes dressed like a boy to disguise whom her real identity was. She wore loose-fitting clothes and a ball cap to try and hide her face. She wanted to be able to focus all of her attention on classes and not have to worry about people recognizing
Selena, “Le Reina de Tejano”, was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson. She was the youngest of three children of Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcela, his wife. At a young age, Abraham had a strong passion for music that he still has. During the 1950s and 1960s, him and his friends made a group called “Los Dinos” and played at nightclubs and restaurants. Even though his passion for music, he gave it up when he got married and earned a job at Dow Chemical as a shipping clerk.
Selena started her career in 1984 by recording two records for a small independent label. One of the albums was released and later re-released in 1995. The other album was
Known as the “Queen of Tejano” and the “Mexican Madonna”, Selena Quintanilla-Perez was the adored Latin singer who sadly did not get to live to see all of the success of her career. One of her most famous quotes is, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever but to create something that will (PhilosIblog, 2014).” That is just what Selena did and she made sure that her legacy would live on for years. Selena surely left a her mark in this world with the help of her family, in her short lived 23 years. Selena was an amazing singer, she even made it very far in a genre of music that was dominated by men. Selena Quintanilla-Perez is an influential person because of her loving personality, her music career, her determination to succeed in a genre that was only men, and her success with her music that will never stop playing even if she is not here.
“Latin America includes the entire continent of South America, as well as Mexico. Central America, and the Caribbean Islands. Physical geography has played an important role in the economic development of Latin America.” (Doc A and Doc G) Latin America has many unique cultural characteristics, industrial products, agricultural products, and human activity.
Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer. She was called the Queen of Tejano music, her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers. Selena was born on April 16, 1971 and died of a gunshot wound on March 31, 1995. Furthermore, in the 1980s, Selena was often criticized and was refused bookings at venues across Texas for performing Tejano music—a male-dominated music genre. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won nine consecutive times. Selena signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album the same year, while her
In her songs, she is often changing between hip-hop and pop that no other rapper is capable of, or
The increase and changing demography in the United State today, with the disparities in the health status of people from different cultural backgrounds has been a challenge for health care professionals to consider cultural diversity as a priority. It is impossible for nurses and other healthcare professionals to learn and understand theses diversity in culture, but using other approaches like an interpreter is very helpful for both nurses and patients. In this paper of a culturally appropriate care planning, I will be discussing on the Hispanic American culture because, I had come across a lot of them in my career as a nurse. The Hispanic are very diverse in terms of communication and communities and include countries like Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, South and Central America, and some of them speak and write English very well, some speaks but can’t write while some can’t communicate in English at all but Spanish.
“Poverty and exploitation of women in Latin America can never be alleviated because they are rooted in machismo,” meaning that because of the way society was run in Latin American, women can’t advance from the ancient state of mind that they belong in the private sphere and should stay there, because only men are good enough to be out in the public sphere. The reason why society was run in this manner, was because of the machismo feeling engraved in the minds of men and, in some cases, women in society. Alicia, Carolina, and Nancy don’t really have any other choice, than try to survive on their own by doing acts that are not “approved” by the society they live in. Even now, because of their actions, we could even disagree with the way they decided to approach their situation, because even now a day, we could think that selling one’s body or being involved in “off the book”
The culture I was born and raised on was that of Mexican-American culture. My parents were born and raised in Mexico, and when they came to America and had kids, they instilled a hybrid of their culture, and American culture, in us. They were each raised in the Mexican culture, but wanted us to be raised as Americans also, and added this to our upbringing.
Alicia Keys was born in 1981, in New York. From the young age of 7 years old, she began piano lessons. After graduating from the Professional Performance Arts School, she signed a deal with Clive Davis, the head of Arista Records. Davis left Arista to start J Records and Alicia Keys followed. Her album Songs in A Minor released in 2001, and went platinum five times over and earned her five Grammys. She followed up with hit albums such as The Diary of Alicia Keys released in 2003, As I Am in 2007 and Girl on Fire in 2009, all of which won the her Grammys.
History is usually outlined by critical moments which have had enduring effects in the world. Several turning points have defined the history of Latin America. Two major climaxes in Latin American History were the 19th-century Wars of Independence and the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Both of these events have significantly changed the course of Latin American history.
What is culture? Many people ask themselves this question every day. The more you think about it the more confusing it is. Sometimes you start leaning to a culture and then people tell you you’re wrong or they make you feel like a different person because of your culture. I go through this almost every day. Because of the way I was raised I love Mexican rodeo but I was born and raised in Joliet. This can be very difficult trying to understand culture. I live in this huge mix of culture. Culture is personal. People can have many cultures especially in America and because of globalization. Cultural identity is not one or the other, it is not Mexican or American. Cultural identity is an individual relevant thing.
The industry before Selena entered the field was male dominant and the few women who were known weren't Hispanic. Selena was the first female Tejano singer to ever have a large amount of success, she opened the door for many Female Latin singers because before Selena, there was not many Hispanic females dominating the charts, in Tejano music women were not seen as being able to become very popular, have a fan base, and produce good music, Selena proved them all wrong just by being herself and using the talent she was born with she became very popular with Tejano music fans was chosen as the Tejano Music Awards' Female Entertainer of the Year. She claimed that award for the next eight years. Once discovered by a major Latin music record label
In just 9 years of being in the music industry, Rihanna has achieved 12 billboard music awards, 8 Grammy awards, sold 210 million songs and 54 million albums worldwide. You think that’s all? No! She’s the fastest solo artist to hit the no.1 singles on billboard hot 100, thirteen times; that too as the youngest in the scene!
Anthem is a song of celebration or praise, as well as a being held scared. My anthem would be, “Waka Waka,” by Shakira because it is a great anthem for people who don’t give up and keep going with any challenges life brings it’s way with confidence. “Walks Waka” express the way of how people feel when they are not giving up and how to push themselves to do great things. Both, not giving up and confidence, are important to me.
