In the play Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare there are two main plots in the story. The first is about Claudio and Hero and their relationship, the second is Beatrice and Benedick and their relationship both of these relationships end up in marriage. Shakespeare compares these relationships side by side and you can clearly see his opinion on marriage. He believes in love, but he doesn’t believe in the arranged marriage that is happening during the Elizabethan era of his writing. In the play Claudio and Hero are the two main characters as well as the main plot of the play. They are a younger couple because of the immaturity that Claudio presents. Claudio in the play is very posseive, gullible, and insecure because he doesn’t want to be cuckold by Hero. Claudio talks very much like a lover to Hero. For example when he is talking to Benedick about Hero he states “In mine eyes she is sweetest lady that ever looked on” (Shakespeare 61). Claudio is saying that Hero is one of the sweetest lady he has ever laid eyes on. Another quote is “I would scarce trust myself, though I had sworn the contrary, if Hero would be my wife” (Shakespeare 61). Here Claudio is saying that if he had ever sworn never to marry, he would break his promise to himself if Hero …show more content…
One where they hardly communicate, they have an arranged marriage, much younger couple, and that the gentleman is talking like a lover about a women he doesn’t love. The second relationship they communicate all the time, they have a choice in their relationship, and they are a much older couple than the other. Shakespeare shows his point that he doesn’t like the idea of an arranged marriage in fact you can argue that he hates it, but that doesn’t mean that he hates marriage all together. He loves the idea of marriage, but for him it has to come from the heart and not anybody’s
In both Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado about Nothing Shakespeare shows the importance of relationships and family roles. In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare shows that arranged marriages was a tradition and as lord Capulet said to Juliet “If you are mine, I’ll give you to my friend; if you are not, hang,...
Firstly, one of the two major tragic flaws of Claudio is his Passion of love for Hero. Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing says, “Sweet Hero, now thy image doth appear In the rare semblance that lov’d it first” (Shakespeare pg. 89). This quote shows how Claudio loves Hero once again when he hears Hero’s innocence. This quote also shows how Claudio’s passion of love for Hero is not as deep as it should have because he loved her again after overreacting and judging things too
...ut Nothing is an extremely fast paced and witty play, Shakespeare very much has love as his central theme. There are two very different, yet equally compelling relationships that are explored in depth. They run through the play concurrently, allowing the reader to compare and contrast the different facets and complexities between the two. The playwright’s rich understanding of relationships, and particularly his understanding of the fact that love is not always as formulaic as many a writer would have us believe, makes for a fascinating read. In fact, by directly comparing a realistic couple, full of real world self doubt and a fear of rejection with a very stereotypical love-at-first-sight type of relationship, Shakespeare is possibly making the point that love and relationships have more depth than is often given credit.
How Shakespeare Presents the Character of Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing and How Interpretations of His Character Can Vary Claudio is firstly presented, though he is not in the scene where this takes place as a brave, young and fresh addition to Don Pedro’s. troops and that he is quickly growing to be a hero and this is commented on by the messenger in the scene. He is extremely nave in the early scenes, he has a very simple and trusting view of the world. and the way it works, he seems to be flirtatious, making him possibly. desperate or genuinely in need of love.
As mentioned, the act of Claudio forfeiting Hero’s hand in marriage and denouncing her at their wedding ceremony due to her unloyalty, not only proves that a woman’s virtue is critical to his “love” for her but also reveals a deeper meaning to the play as a whole at various degrees. Men are only satisfied when they completely dominate a woman. This means not only obtaining her heart, but her virginity and virtue as well. In this time period, their wives were seen as their property and a man would rather throw his whole fiance away than tread on previously marked territory. If Claudio genuinely loved Hero in the first place, he would have confronted her about the situation in private before he unjustly demolished her publicly based on a loose
True love is a bond shared by few and dreamed of by everyone. The appearance of a relationship may not accurately depict the true reality of the situation. The bond between Claudio and Hero appears far stronger than that of Beatrice and Benedict, yet events of the play provide evidence for the converse. In Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing, the masked emotions of two couples are evoked through subterfuge.
Centuries ago in Elizabethan England there were many traditions about marriage and the treatment of women. One strong tradition of these times was the practice of marriage between races. Interracial marriages were considered extremely taboo. (High Beam). In this era marriages were arranged by the parents with strong help from the local church. The individuals had little choice as to who they would marry. (Elizabethan England Life). Yet another example of these traditions was the respectable treatment of women. While the husband was in charge of his wife, as was the father, the husband were expected to treat the women right (Elizbethi). In spurning all of these traditions, Shakespeare demonstrates a view of marriage far different from that of Elizabethan England, in doing this he is trying to plant new ideas in the people who read or view the play.
...e one of the main issues raised is that there is not enough equality and that women do not have enough of a voice. The way that the character Beatrice is represented in this play the way that doesn’t conform, whereas Hero is the idealistic women, wife, daughter of Shakespeare’s time. Whilst Much Ado About Nothing was written 400 years ago the relevance of Shakespeare’s issues of Love and Deception are still universal. The theme of love transcend, Beatrice and Benedick relationship is an archetypal for unconditional and unwavering love. Deception is still a common occurrence in our modern world. Don John is still the most deceptive character in the play even though Don Pedro, his brother deceives; his deception is used for good instead of bad. This play is still popular today as the themes of love and deception are still relevant in daily life and in this society.
...ghts. Love in Hamlet was depressing, where as love in Much Ado About Nothing is happy and often love at first site. Even though the love comes off in a different matter the love in these plays drives the character to do what they feel. Marriage in Hamlet was used to achieve assets where as in Much Ado About Nothing marriage originated from love. Marriage is desired by all at some point in their life. Death all in all is a very depressing and touchy matter however in Much Ado About Nothing it is often perceived as a joke, or a game. Each play has ideas of love, marriage, and death however, they are both viewed differently.
How Two Shakespearean Couples Resolve Conflict in Their Relationships in A Midsummer Night's Dream and As You Like It
Many of Shakespeare's plays show a strong theme of love. Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing deal primarily with the issue of true and false love. Romeo and Juliet, tragic play, is about two lovers who struggle, sacrifice, and defy their families and society for the sake of love that changes them completely. Although the end of Romeo and Juliet's story is death both of the lovers, their love turns to be immortal. Much Ado About Nothing, comedy play, is about two lovers who their relationship starts as child like and develops to be true love that motives the lovers to sacrifice in order to keep their love. The two plays deal also with the idea of false love. Romeo, the hero of Romeo and Juliet, thinks that he loves Rosaline, but when he meets Juliet, the heroin of Romeo and Juliet, he falls in love with her, forgetting his love to Rosaline. In Much Ado About Nothing, the relationship between Claudio and Hero's, main characters in the play, is based on wealth and appearance attraction. Conventional love is another kind of that is shown in Romeo and Juliet, where it develops in social situations without any consideration to emotions.
Two people can have a relationship that can go in many different directions. They can either love or hate each other. In the Play Much Ado About Nothing two characters specifically Beatrice and Benedick have a relationship that gets off to a rough beginning and then there relationship throughout gets an entirely different turn. Both of their traits often cause some tension between the two and they often argue as well even when they have similar ones.

Shakespeare’s plays are very drastic with how he ties love into them. Shakespeare always adds comedy or tragedy to any romance that might be taking place. For example in Twelfth Night, As You like It and Romeo and Juliet there is romance but he also puts comedy in there so love is not that easy. In the play Othello he makes it into a tragedy which makes the love even harder to take place. Shakespeare has always found a way to make love as complicated as he can which leads me to believe that he feels that you must work for love and it should not be handed to you. Love is already complicated, but when Shakespeare is involved he makes sure at least two things come around that can make it harder for those who are in love to actually stay in love.
It is the loss and gain of love that makes us who we are. Loss of a parent, who you thought you might be, whom you thought you could trust, and the people you love. . One of the things Shakespeare revealed was that love makes life complicated. Whether you were a peasant or nobility attending this play; everybody can relate. Love brings struggle but it also brings so much joy in the process. It opens your heart to new beginnings and chances. The same way Claudio opened up to Hero’s doppelgänger or the way Beatrice forgave Benedick and loved him anyway. It opens your heart to new places. Love isn’t a fantasy we all hope exists, it is real. We just have to work to find it and work even harder to keep it. Who do you love?
