Shakespeare’s View of Human Nature
William Shakespeare was indeed a master and genius of exploring the multiple facets of human nature: ranging from the beauty of his sonnets, to the comedy of his characters, to the dark and twisted fields of love, betrayal and war. Without doubt the exploration of human strengths and weaknesses is the key to the popularity and survival of Shakespeare’s literary genius, and its applicability across cultures and time. While examining the human nature across his literature we come across many situations that always existed and will exist around one in a society. He has written many plays, which included romance, revenges and deceitfulness. His view on human nature was simple; it was different from the other writers.
We observed many of his shades in Hamlet, where he was a prince who was turned into a revenge-taking prince. First one, we observed was” revenge”. Hamlet was a sweet loving prince who was attached to his family and loved them very much. But then a ghost of King Hamlet comes and warns him to be careful...

William Shakespeare is widely known for his ability to take a sad story, illustrate it with words, and make it a tragedy. Usually human beings include certain discrepancies in their personalities that can at times find them in undesirable or difficult situations. However, those that are exemplified in Shakespeare’s tragedies include “character flaws” which are so destructive that they eventually cause their downfall. For example, Prince Hamlet, of Shakespeare’s tragedy play “Hamlet,” is seemingly horrified by what the ghost of his father clarifies concerning his death. Yet the actions executed by Hamlet following this revelation do not appear to coincide with the disgust he expresses immediately after the ghost alerts him of the true cause of his death. Thus, it is apparent that the instilled self doubt of Prince Hamlet is as the wand that Shakespeare uses to transform an otherwise sad story to an unfortunate tragedy.
An understanding of William Shakespeare’s philosophies reinforces the meaning of the human condition found in the play Hamlet. The revenge tragedy is an example in the exploration of good versus evil, deceit, madness, inter-turmoil, and utter existence. Shakespeare, fascinated by the human mind and human nature, clearly and completely illustrates the meaning of “self.” Hamlet is a drama that examines one’s personal identity. In Shakespeare’s plays, those characters experienced great struggles of choosing to be moral or evil. He gave them chances to choose whether they wanted to become good and moral even though, according to the settings, it was reasonably for them to become evil and give their enemies a taste of their own medicine. In this paper, three characters from different plays will be compared, such as Claudio from Much Ado about Nothing, Prospero from Tempest, and Hamlet from Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark.
The theme of revenge is expanded and created by the ghost of King Hamlet because not only does he instruct others to seek revenge but he has such a powerful reach that characters, mainly Prince Hamlet, become driven by this want for revenge. Prince Hamlet shows his eagerness for revenge by saying that “Hast me to know’t, that I, with wings as swift / As meditation or the thoughts of love, / May sweep to my revenge” (34). As the text progresses the message or theme of revengeance fully surfaces when those who are driven by revenge, Laertes and Prince Hamlet, lure themselves to their own demise and this showcases the evil in chasing revenge. In addition, Shakespeare not only uses the theme of revenge but also uses the almost opposite theme of patience to show what mankind “should be and what not to be”. The following shows the outcome of Fortinbras’s patience, “I have some rights of memory in this kingdom, / Which now to claim my vantage doth invite me” (177). In Hamlet, Shakespeare uses the ghost of King Hamlet as a representation and establisher of the theme of revenge and by the end of the tragedy shows how the characters, Prince Hamlet and Laertes, who followed this path lead themselves to their deaths; however, Shakespeare uses Fortinbras to represent the theme of patience and how not seeking revenge or acting upon impulses, like Hamlet and Laertes, led him to the throne of Denmark. The author of 154 sonnets, the author of 37 plays and the creator of over 1700 words, William Shakespeare is undoubtedly regarded as one of the most influential poet and playwright today. Many people have devoted their lives to studying Shakespeare’s work and even a university program is dedicated to the high-school students who wish to further their knowledge of him. Out of the numerous plays Shakespeare has written to this day, Hamlet was declared – as of November 23, 2008- his greatest play through a survey conducted by the Sunday Telegraph; however, the question of whether or not Hamlet, written 400 years ago, is a valuable and worthwhile text for students to study. In arguably the greatest play to ever be written, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, proves to be a suitable and beneficial text for teachers to study its themes, characterization and entertainment value with their students as it manifests aspects of our society that students can learn from, relate to, and further their ability to evolve as a person. Through the different themes of appearance versus reality, the uncertainty of life after death and the misogynistic tendencies that is attributed regularly in the play, readers can use this knowledge as a platform to gain awareness of the surrounding themes in their society and the effects it has on the people in it. Additionally, through the different characters Shakespeare has created in the play, Hamlet, Horatio and Polonius offers a parallel of the people its readers will often come across and associate with today. Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most well-known tragedies. At first glance, it holds all of the common occurrences in a revenge tragedy which include plotting, ghosts, and madness, but its complexity as a story far transcends its functionality as a revenge tragedy. Revenge tragedies are often closely tied to the real or feigned madness in the play. Hamlet is such a complex revenge tragedy because there truly is a question about the sanity of the main character Prince Hamlet. Interestingly enough, this deepens the psychology of his character and affects the way that the revenge tragedy takes place. An evaluation of Hamlet’s actions and words over the course of the play can be determined to see that his ‘outsider’ outlook on society, coupled with his innate tendency to over-think his actions, leads to an unfocused mission of vengeance that brings about not only his own death, but also the unnecessary deaths of nearly all of the other main characters in the revenge tragedy.
