Sexual identity is a complex matter. It is diverse, fluid and far from binary. In essence, it is the societal labels we use to signify who we are. Sexuality encompasses many things, like one’s gender, orientation, experiences, attitudes, desires, etc. We as human beings are sexual beings. We have been since the day we were born to the day we die. It stems from who we are as people. Thus, it is ever changing, just like we do. However, we do not live in our own personal bubbles. There is a multitude of external and internal factors that can shape and mold our identity, expressions and behavior. For example, our background, family, media, society, and our past experiences. I am and was big into musical theater. It is my hobby and runs in my blood. The arts is how I found culture. So I was exposed to a lot of things about complex relationships and sexuality even from an early age. Almost every play or musical centers around love or relationships. They can hit on topics of sexuality; like sex, gender, romance, love, relationships, marriage, rape, prostitution, etc.. Even if at the time I did not fully understand it. The interesting thing about theater is it designed to make a statement and encourages you to put yourself in other’s shoes. You get to see things from others perspectives. You form a deeper appreciation for people. Also, it served as my introduction to the LGBT community. This is probably one of the reasons I am open-minded and free to express myself. The theater community is one of the most positive and accepting one out there.
Similarly, I really like cinematic theater. One of my favorite things is going to the movies or watching television. Just like theater, it was a way for me to experience and learn about things that I never encountered before. Personally, I love romantic comedies and chick flicks. I know that they are super unrealistic and silly. Yet I enjoy them. I think they made me a bit of a helpless romantic. I also have high expectations because of that.
