Diane Phengdy English 4 07 August 2017 The Reality Charles Dickens was not only an author that used writing to speak about Victorian issues, he was also an advocate for children’s rights. The reality is, the Victorian era was not an ideal time frame for children. It was a time where they were not treated righteously as humans, but as property. Children in the Victorian era were abused in multiple ways. One of those ways was being sexually exploited and it wasn’t such a miniscule problem. Apparently in London 1848, nearly 2,700 girls aged 11 through 16 were hospitalized due to sexual diseases, mainly due to prostitution. Children were also abused in the sense of labor. That’s right, child labor was prominent in Victorian England where children started working around 4 or 5 years old. They worked hard, exhausting jobs and long, dreaded hours while their safety wasn’t even considered. No one considered the job safety of children in the workplace. This is quite abhorrent due to the fact that their jobs were never easy, it was always cheap and difficult labor. The lack of safety supervision resulted into multiple injuries and deaths. Death in dangerous workplaces was not uncommonly found amongst children, it happened quite often due to all the opportunities for injury and how physically vulnerable children are. They could easily crawl into small, dangerous places and injure themselves with machinery. Common jobs for children included mining, factory work, servants, cleaning, farming, and unfortunately, prostitution. A regular day on the job was 14 to 18 hours a day, leaving little time for rest and sleep. This must’ve taken a toll on the children's’ bodies, as they are still developing and unable to complete exhausting and dreadful tasks for long periods of time. The kids under the age of fourteen were sent to go assist with the textile workers. They then would beat and verbally abuse the child. And if children would show up late, they would be weighted. Weighted means to put a very heavy weight on the child's back and have them walk up and down the factory aisles for hours, so other children can learn from it. Children were still able to contribute to their families. Money was a big struggle, and it had a major impact for poor families. Children were also getting a wide range of opportunities and work experiences for the future ahead. Many times if the children fell asleep while on the job, they would slip and get stuck in the machines, resulting in death. Child labor in the late 1800’s was very unsafe and put the lives of young children in danger. The children worked in very dangerous conditions, most of the time it was factories. The conditions were very poor, the factories were dirty and unsafe for children. The children would work for up to sixteen hours with little to no pay.
Children who worked indoors were often exposed to toxic fumes, extreme heat, and dangerous machinery. Those who worked in glass factories often cut or burned themselves on broken or hot glass. Children in textile mills were forced to breathe in dust and cotton fibers. Many suffered permanent lung damage. Small and nimble children were assigned to equipment that required quick motions. Those who operated machinery designed for adults often lost fingers. Working long days meant they sometimes fell asleep on the job, putting them at risk for serious injury. A Manchester spinner explains that they are "locked up in factories eight stories high, (the worker) has no relaxation till the ponderous engine stops, and then they go home to get refreshed for the next day; no time for sweet association with their families; they are all alike fatigued and exhausted."
The labor conditions that children faced were very demanding for a human being from such a small age. For example “In the Manayunk district of Philadelphia, children as young as seven assisted in spinning and weaving of cotton and woolen goods” (Wolensky 2). The children working in the factories had their childhood freedom taken away from them. “In 1830 in a sample of 43 Manchester mills, 22.3% of the workforce was under 14 and 32.4% under 16” (Cunningham 412). This means that about 50% of the workforce in the mills were made up of children under the age of 16 and in today in the United States, a person cannot work until the age of 16. “And it is a hard thing for small children to be confined in a tight close room all day long. It affects their growth, makes them pale and sickly” (Nason). The time these children spent in the factories prevented them from spending time with their neighbors, friends, and family. The fact that young children had to work in these textile mills, created changes to American culture on how childhood years are supposed to be spent.
Child labor is nothing but cheap labor. The big companies loved cheap labor because then they could make an item for not very much money, and make a huge profit margin. Fried continues to state how cheap the labor was, “One glass factory in Massachusetts was fenced with barbed wire ‘to keep the young imps inside.’ These were boys under 12 who carried loads of hot glass all night for a wage of 40 cents to $1.10 per night.” Unlike, children today who are in bed sleeping by 8 pm each night, these children had to stay up all night working to make just enough income for their families.
For example, Parliament’s Sadler Committee Report ‘s testimony from Hannah Goode in 1833, addresses the abuse of children in factories, “he (the factory manager) beats the little children if they do not do their work right.” This statement demonstrates how industrialization caused the physical abuse of child workers as a way of maintaining factory production. Additionally, in testimonies before parliament of the mines in South Wales, from a 6 year old girl,”I am down six weeks and make 10 to 14 rakes a day; I carry a full 56lbs. of coal” this describes the mine putting a lot of work on developing children. This statement demonstrates how industrialization led to children being treated as middle aged people which made their bodies develop wrong. Finally, in Testimony Before Parliament’s factory Inquiry Commission by Dr. Michael Ward in 1819, “the children’s hands and arms have being caught in the machinery.” This demonstrates how the industrialization resulted in the children getting hurt oftenly, and children dying of a lost limb, or they would get severely
The Victorian Era was a time of social evolution as well as technological and economic advance. A distinct, unique middle class was formed alongside the traditional working class and wealthy aristocracy. However, there were certain individuals that fell outside this model of Victorian society. The “abandoned child” was society’s scapegoat- a person without a past, without connections, without status. They could appear in any class, at any time. The upper and middle classes often had a somewhat romantic perception of them, due to their prevalence in Victorian literature. Novels like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights made heroines/heroes out of orphans, portraying them as respectable yet troubled (Cunningham,“Orphan Texts”). However, orphans were also often treated with disdain and distrust, due to their reputation as “criminally prone” individuals. They were a victim of classic “Victorian contradictions” that characterized most aspects of Victorian society.
Child prostitution in America is increasingly popular. It is necessary to change this situation, because it is immoral. Child prostitution is one of the most serious social problems in America.
For example, factory workers were expected to work 14-16 hour days, six days a week. The dusty, dirty, unlit mills along with few break times made working there a living hell. “Breaker boys suffered from chronic throat trouble and respiratory illnesses that were caused by inhaling coal dust. Above ground machinery, particularly coal crushers, were dangerously loud. If a breaker boy worked long hours around the coal crusher he often suffered from hearing loss (Wagner). Due to the fact that there were no safety laws in place, ear plugs and masks were not used. In fact, no safety equipment was. The dangerous machines with unprotected parts made children susceptible to injury and death. If someone were to get injured, they were immediately fired and not paid compensation for their health care. “If a boy was caught wearing gloves, the boss would beat him. A skin condition that miners termed “Red tips” was brought about by prolonged contact with sulfur from the coal. Breaker boys’ fingers often became cracked, bloody, and swollen from sorting (Wagner)....
Most children who worked; suffered health related issues. “Many of the industries that employ large numbers of young workers in the United States have higher-than-average injury rates for workers of all ages, such as grocery stores, hospitals, nursing homes, and agriculture.”Because of their physical differences from adults, kids had rapid skeletal growth, greater risk of hearing loss, greater need for food, higher chemical absorption rate and lower heat tolerance. Also they weren’t able to receive education.
Victorian morality describes the moral views and social expectations of people living at the time of Queen Victoria's rule from 1837 to 1901 which completely contrasted any morality in pervious eras. Victorians encouraged hard work, morality, social respect and religious conformity. Today, the term “Victorian morality” can describe any set of values that exercise sexual restraint, intolerance of criminality and a strict social code of conduct. The word "Victorian" has a wide range of connotations, most specifically the high moral standards, but today the Victorian era is usually associated with “prudishness” and “repression”.
