Sexual Content In The Media Essay

In today’s society there is a major issue involving the amount of sexual content in the media. I am studying the effects of exposure to sexual content in the media because I want to find out how it affects adolescents. In order to understand the effects on this subject group I had to look at several theories that have been presented over time. After mentioning that, I have read about many, many theories about which the topic pertains to. Some of which will be discussed in my paper.

The problem is that this poses a threat to the risks of premarital teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Evidence shows that among girls between the ages of fifteen and seventeen, 75 out of 1000 become pregnant each year. That is just in the United States! According to content analysis, studies link sociodemographic factors to viewing preferences of teens as well as their interpretation of sexual content in the media. Many theories are given throughout the article but they all center around idea that more exposure to sexual content in the media likely means the adoption of the values, beliefs, and behaviors. As aforementioned the sexual content in the media is increasing, and not just in the amount. It is also increasing in severity. It is changing from mild to more explicit. Those images are hard to remove from the mind and the longer they are dwelled on, the more influence they have. The ideas presented by the sexual content in the media are becoming more widespread. Teens are influenced by things that they see and they are seeing more than a fair share of it in the media. The pressure of conforming to the sexual views in the media are honing in on teens.
