The sexuality behind woman’s breasts. Breasts; defined as either of the two soft, protruding organs on the upper front of a woman's body that secrete milk after pregnancy. By this definition, it would be hard to interpret any of the underlying sexual connotations that breasts exert. Women leave the hospital, and begin the treacherous journey of whether or not to breast-feed in public. It is tough to understand why a women would not breast feed in public, however, society has sexualized breast to the point where some would argue public breast-feeding is inappropriate. It is hard to comprehend how organs that feed an infant are perceived as sexual. However, after reading multiple articles, a light is finally shining on why breasts have an underlying sexual meaning. “While the mammary glands contained in women's breasts exist for the feeding of infants, the fatty tissue that confers the magical curve of the human breast—the swell, sway, and jiggle—has nothing to do with milk production.” (Ryan, 2010) This quote really opened up the question of why breasts hold a sexual desire. It can be related back to previous centuries where larger women were seen as rich and healthy, verses skinny woman who held a poor and unhealthy image. Breasts contain fatty tissue to signal as men that the women are healthy and ready to produce milk for a baby. It is not a conscious thought that the man thinks; it is a biological, subconscious response. Soft, fatty breasts convey that the woman is fertile and able to withstand the hardship of pregnancy and breastfeeding (Ryan, 2010). There is a clear indication that the sexual connotation behind breasts is partially due to biological instincts. Another probable cause is the sensitivity of the female nipples. “It is not just an exciting visual stimulus for (most) men but also a key source of sexual pleasure for most women.” (Barber, 2013) Conclusively, woman’s breasts are inherently sexual in our society, and that …show more content…

However, statistically, this is not the case. “Women with larger breasts commonly report having low self-esteem and a poor body image” (Burt, 2014) However, as suggested by the amount of breast enlargement surgeries conducted yearly, women with small breasts clearly have self-esteem issues as well. Stories of women with smaller breasts getting surgery done to enhance their breasts are not rare, on the contrary, there are more breast enlargement surgeries than there are breast reduction surgeries. Breasts provoke an immense amount of self-questioning and image issues, practically from the time puberty begins. It is always a battle between too big and too small; many woman face criticisms, regardless of their breast size, from a very young age. From being made fun of for having large breast, to being mocked for obtaining smaller breasts, there just is no winning for women. There will always be a man who prefers big and a man who prefers small. It is impossible to please
