“Sexual assault is a problem that permeates all socioeconomic classes and impacts hundreds of thousands in the United States and millions worldwide” (DeVore 605). For many years, sexual assault has started to become a huge problem all around the world. One of the places it is starting to become more of a problem is in colleges. Many colleges try to avoid dealing with sexual assaults on their campuses. They don’t want their colleges to be known for sexual assault at their schools. Multiple colleges are starting to learn more about sexual assault and trying to help fight it from happening on their campuses. Many colleges are having a hard time with how they should be dealing with sexual assault cases on campuses. Colleges are trying to set up a better system and place for victims of sexual assault to turn to for help. Many people have had problems with the way colleges deal with assaults on campuses. Some victims or even some perpetrators have filed lawsuits against the colleges because they didn’t have a efficient investigation into the sexual assault. According to Washington Post, ninety-one percent of colleges had no reported cases of rape in 2014 (Panquette). Man are the most common people to commit sexual assault. In some cases women are the ones commiting the crime, but that is a very rare occurrence. According to Aggression and Violent Behavior, about 14% of rapes were committed by a stranger and 76% were committed by a spouse or a date (Antonia 273). Recently a student named Brock Turner was charged with rape. He only served three months when it’s suppose to be up to three to eight years for rape. There are many problems that need to be addressed with colleges and how to deal with sexual assault cases. More and more people who have committed sexual assault are starting to get away with it because colleges aren’t taking the right steps to helping the victims. For many victims of sexual assault, they are too scared to report the incident. They don’t want their families to know what happened to them and they feel ashamed. Some victims feel that nobody will believe them so they don’t feel like telling anybody will help. According to the Journal of American College Health, only about 28% of sexual assault victims seek healthcare assistance after being sexually assaulted (Sable 158). Many victims try to hid the incident, but by trying to hide something so traumatic they start to have mental and phyiscal problems. Many victims of sexual assault deal with depression after their traumatic experience. Depression is a brain disorder that can make a person sad and cause them to lose interest in some activities. Another symptom some victims may deal with is anxiety. There are many physical problems for some victims of sexual assault also. According to International Journal of Men's Health, men who report having been sexually assaulted as adults report poorer physical health statuses than men who do not report adult sexual victimization (Tewksbury 22). There are numerous ways people are starting to help the victims of sexual assault. Many colleges are starting to set up counselors on campuses for sexual assault victims.
