Sydney Smith Mrs. Kari Williams Advanced Writing 26 February 2017 Sexual Abuse Eleven year old Erin was very close with her fourteen year old cousin, Brian. Erin did not have an older brother, so Brian was a brother figure to her. They would play around, wrestle and do things that brothers and sisters would do. One summer Erin and her cousins went to their grandmother’s cabin for a vacation, where Erin slept in the same bed as Brian. During the middle of the night Erin had woken up to Brian’s hand being under her pants resting on her privates. Believing it was a dream, she took his hand and put it on his chest. Although she did not know it at the time, this would be the first of many incidents. The next morning Erin did not mention anything because she thought it was an accident. As neighbors, the incidents continued. One day after school, Erin and her little sister went over to Brian’s house to play. They decided to play hide and seek; hiding in a small crowded space in the basement, Brian began fondling Erin. Erin fought back and yelled for him to get off of her. The most common long term effect is depression. This mental illness causes victims to feel sorrowful most of the time and poor self esteem can be so bad that they may even have suicidal thoughts. It has been shown that most victims blame themselves and take responsibility for the abuse. Poor self esteem can cause victims to feel worthless, dirty, and ugly. Confusion is another effect because the victims never understand why they were abused (Hall 2-3).
