Sexting has become more of a problem these days than it has been in the past. Sexting is when someone sends a sexual explicit photo of themselves via cell phone, snapchat, email, or facebook. Teens are getting cell phones at a much earlier age which is one of the main causes of why sexting is becoming such a big deal. Some of them are even getting smartphones when their parents should just get them a basic phone. Having these smart phones gives teenagers more freedom which is something most teens do not need. Hence that parents don’t understand the consequences and open access that children have to information that they can retrieve via smartphone. When it comes to sexting most teenagers do it because of the attention that it creates for them, …show more content…
Diffusion of responsibility is when someone won’t take responsibility for something if there are a lot of other people around. Diffusion of responsibility means “a reduction of a sense of urgency to help someone involved in an emergency or dangerous situation under the assumption that others who are also observing the situation will help” (Gilovich 538). The way that this can be related to sexting is that teenagers can get themselves involved in some dangerous situations if they are not careful, such as they could get involved with someone that they don’t know. Sexting can be harmful and risky because there are many dangers to it because not everyone knows what they are getting themselves into. It can be harmful because teenagers send naked pictures of each other on snapchat and they will do it to get revenge on their ex’s. If they post a picture on snapchat or instagram it could be used as blackmail and that could cause trouble for them in the future if they wanted to get find a job it would be harder for them for get one. Diffusion of responsibility used with sexting can also result in cyberbulling, school violence, and online predators. It can result to cyberbulling, school violence, and online violence because their pictures could end up on the internet and in the hands of the wrong person. It can also be a problem because if a girl or guy just breaks up with each other they will feel hurt and they …show more content…
Social facilitation is when someone will affect someone else positive or negative and in the presence of others. In terms of what my social psychology textbook says that social facilitation it means “ initially a term for enhanced performance in the presence of others; now a broader term for the effect- positive or negative- of the presence of others on performance” (Gilovich). The way that sexting would relate to social facilitation is that sexting is in a way a form of expressing confidence in personal sexuality in the presence of another person. It can be related because social facilitation is when someone performs well at something they are already good at while being watched. A photograph is a very public medium because it can be shared and sent anywhere and the receiver wants to think that there could be a type of pride in being so bold which could make the sender braver and more confident in posing for photos that are being used for sexting. Smartphones and most phones in general has made people more bold because it eliminates shame when the reaction of the recipient is only through whatever words they decide to text back makes people say and do things that they would never say in person because they feel more confident and positive with what they can say when they sext. I read an article in The Atlantic called Why Kids sext which is a great example of this because there was a sexting ring going on
In today’s American society, almost everyone, even children as young as six, owns a cell phone with a camera. Although convenient, camera phones also open the door to massive problems concerning child pornography that stem from sexting, or sending nude or lascivious photos. According to a 2010 Federal Bureau of Investigation survey1 of 4,400 middle and high school students, “approximately eight percent of students reported that they had sent a sext of themselves to others while thirteen percent said they had received a sext.” The main problem with sexting, aside from being child pornography if it is a picture of minor, is the ease of dissemination of the sext to other contacts or even the Internet. The United States alone has seen several students commit suicide after a sext intended for one person’s eyes goes viral or is sent to the entire high school. Such was the case of Ohio high school student, Jesse Logan, who sent nude photos to her boyfriend who then sent them to other students who harassed her until she committed suicide.2
Sexting is a current phenomenon, the word sexting is a blend of the two words sex and text. The subject of this research article is important because it can help researchers and people in general to better understand the meaning and different interpretations of the word sexting and evaluate the positive and negative consequences of sexting. It is also important to review why people sext. As personality traits are analyzed, activity between the sender or receiver of the sexting will also observable, and the literature will determine if the sender or receiver is the vulnerable participant. Vulnerabilities are expressions of personality traits. Through psychology people can be prevented from acquiring maladaptive patterns of behaviors, good examples of these are addictive behaviors are antisocial behavior patterns (Delevi & Weisskirch, 2013).
Schools and programs can have assemblies and discuss the intent of people who sext and the consequences of sexting, whether they are minor or severe. The severe consequences of sexting or posting sexually explicit photos online can be psychologically damaging (ex. emotional trauma to the subject of the photo), especially if the distribution of the photo ends up in the wrong hands, or to an unintended audience. It is known that there is a "social disapproval over sexting, which causes many teens to not report such incidents (Terry, 2013, p. 153). Therefore we cannot be sure of how widespread the act of sexting is, in an accurate manner. Findings vary among researchers regarding the actual frequency of sexting as can be seen in numerous
Now these pictures are not a new thing to do but when disappearing images come into play people don’t think of it as a “big deal”. This app has caused it to become a normal thing and it is now expected for young adults, mostly women, to share their body for men because they think no one else is going to see it and it is going to be gone after ten seconds. What usually isn’t the first thing to come to mind when sending these is screenshotting; if someone screenshots your picture you have no way of telling what they have done or what they’re going to do with it. A study in 2013 took 948 high school students and asked if they have ever engaged in sexting behaviours. 57% have been asked to send a nude photo or a risky message (Temple et. al, 2013 p. 1). That was two years after the app had launched therefore there is no doubt that the numbers have grown larger in the past four
Teenagers in this world of technology have surpassed the written laws put into place to protect our citizens from child pornography. When child pornography laws were placed into the law books there was no internet, no mobile phones, and no social media. These laws were put into place to protect the vary people and children that are using technology. Technology that is used to produce explicit photos of those same people. The problem we are facing now is that the law does not cater to individuals. Is sexting between teenagers actually child pornography? According to the laws yes it is and this must be changed. Teenagers are being charged with production, distribution, and receiving of child pornography and charged with felonies and made to register as sex offenders, this is wrong and the laws must be changed.
Sex is every where these days. Whether it’s a sexual act, phrase, or action, sex has consumed most of our society. Consequentially it has begun to affect many younger children negatively. Whether there is a sexual act on TV, in video games, or within the media, it’s broadcast-ed for pretty much anyone to see anywhere. In most cases, it ends up being seen by the wrong audiences. These images are being seen by younger and younger generations of children; what may not be seen as harmful, but are indeed leading to harmful acts by curious minds. As a result there has been a highly increasing rate of teenagers and younger children being accused and prosecuted for many various sexual offenses.
It’s in the news, its on social media, and its on cell phones. “Sexting” is just one way that many people engage in sexual activity. Sexting is sending and/or receiving sexually explicit photos through messages on their cell phone or through social media. Many Americans today, especially teenagers, are familiar with sexting, however, may not be familiar with the psychology behind sexting; why do we want to do it, what does it makes us feel, and what are the consequences of sexting. Anywhere from 20 to 30 percent of American teenagers actively engage in sexting today.
Sexting is an issue that many people are still unclear on. Sexting is the exchanging of nude or seminude pictures or videos by cell phones (Hewitt and Driscoll). These media files can be exchanged by teens as young as 11 to married adults in their 40s. Sexting can hold serious consequences, such as being charged with child pornography, having to register in the sex offenders list, and even facing jail time (Hewitt and Driscoll). Even after knowing the gravity of the consequences, people continue to sext. The reason behind this phenomenon is still a mystery. Some believe that some individuals want to sext in order to gain the attention that they aren’t getting from significant other. A woman who had participated in sexting even claimed that a man she sexted with made her feel wanted (Tapper). The same article states that men believe “if you get a woman to send you a naked picture, you’re cool. It’s an ego boost.” Although many know sexting can be a crime, many individuals who sext do i...

Incarceration has been the center of the United States justice system ever since the opening of the nation’s first prison. In order to understand how the aspects of the first corrections institutions correlate to later correctional practices seen today. Whether it was temporary or permanent, there has always been some form of detainment for offenders, and they were always held against their will. Imprisonment of offenders in earlier times was done primarily to hold the accused until the authorities determined the offender’s actual punishment. Jails and prisons create a vicious and expensive cycle of crime that usually just end up overcrowding correctional facilities.
Teen’s today face serious criminal charges when they get in trouble for sexting. Sexting is an exchange of nude or seminude images via a telecommunication device. When teens are engaging in sexting, they are not thinking of the possible criminal charges they can face. Sexting among teens is a common issue that we face today in our highly technological world. Laws are not able to keep up with the rate of technology advancements. Teacher, parents, and Louisiana law makers need to be more aware of this issue to try and protect teens from endangering themselves and their future.
With technology becoming easier and easier to use and in part due to the high sexual emphasis in the American culture, men and women are being exposed to pornography earlier and earlier, with the average age being about 12 for men and 13 for women (Gilkerson). These children easily keep their internet wanderings secret from their less technologically savvy parents, as about 62% of teens say their parents know little or nothing about the websites they visit (San Diego Court).

...y, but at the same time those receiving the image have the ability to screenshot (the act of taking a picture from one’s phone screen), and keep or share that image with others. Sexting in general is a problem that many teens face, and with the use of Snapchat as a form of social netoworking the problem seems to be only growing in severity (Bromfield, 2013).
Social media has rapidly increased in the past few years, and has become one of the most significant parts of our daily lives. With websites such as Facebook and Twitter, we are now able to communicate with people half a world away. With just one click, you are able to keep in touch with relatives, gawk at the latest celebrity gossip, and even see what your friends had for breakfast. However, with access to unlimited sources of information, many of us have grown dependent on our phones and computers. Teens, in particular, are one of the most prominent age groups affected by this epidemic. In 2010, 93% of adolescents ages 12-17 were on the internet. With teens now spending copious amount of time on the internet, we are starting to see the negative health repercussions. This technology has led to social media addiction, cyber-bullying, and an increase in negative body images.
