Technology is always advancing. With the birth of new generations, it is being seen that children are easily learning how to adapt and manipulate these technologies to do whatever they want them to do. Take for example cell phones. When cell phones came out in the early 1970s they didn’t have all the different abilities that today’s do. They were just a big, clunky phone that was portable so that one didn’t have to stay in one spot in order to communicate with others. Nowadays cell phones have become smaller, easier to carry, and include nearly any application imaginable essentially turning the once basic cell phone into a portable, miniature computer. With any given advancement in technology, there are going to be ones that misuse it. Computers gained hackers, credit cards information began getting stolen with skimmers and identity thieves, and with cell phones a new form this misuse was born, sexting. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, sexting is defined as the sending of sexually explicit messages or images by cell phones (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). The mere …show more content…
thought of one’s child engaging in such activity is met with disgust by most parents of teens who are more often than not the ones engaging in this activity. According to a study by the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) children as young as seven years old have been participating in some form of sexting and it has been shown that the percentages of those participating rise with age (NAUSWT, n.d.). Some people see the act of sexting as just normal adolescent behavior attributed to puberty and rising hormone levels. Others see it as a gross habit that has been brought up through the rise in access to technology. Unfortunately, many underage children do not understand that sexting can have unintended consequences. Sexting can bring misdemeanor charges all the way up to charges of producing and distributing child pornography that can land a person on the National Sex Offender Registry and even jail time (Thompson, n.d.) In order to remedy the act of sexting in the younger population the juvenile justice system can implement more education on the consequences and repercussions that it can produce.
When a sexting incident lands a child or adolescent in a court room for a first offense there should be mandatory training given and privileges of cell phone use limited or monitored. To stop it from even getting to that point and hopefully reduce this behavior better sex education with a subject on sexting can be implemented in schools earlier on in a child’s life. This would introduce them to what they may face in their coming years and how to avoid it if it all possible until they reach an age where it is deemed more appropriate and less likely to have them facing legal consequences. Until things like these are implemented it is unlikely that one would see a drop in the previously mentioned population’s
participation.
Can you imagine how children do not seem to have any problems in learning how technology works now? It happens that almost every kid has their own laptop, cell phone, iPads or any other electronic devices. Who does not want to live in this world where doing homeworks and making your job much easier, right? If children nowadays are too lucky to have and learn these things while they are young, most of us grew up and experienced the life without technology. In "My Technologically Challenged Life" by Monica Wunderlich, she talked about the different struggles she had experienced in her house, school, workplace, and her car due to the lack of technology.
... with unlimited advanced technological opportunities we will continue to see problems in this area. Children are exposed to technology at ages as young as two years old. It is easier for a parent to hand their child an iPad rather than to teach them singlehandedly. So again I say that the blame is not necessarily the technology but rather the parents fault for allowing the technology to take ahold of a young child’s developing mind.
Currently, there are laws in place against minors sexting and sexting to minors and they fall under the child pornography category. While the laws are intended to protect minors from sexual predators, what most minors do not understand is that they are subject to them as well. This means that, if fifteen-year-old Timmy decides to sext his fifteen-year-old girlfriend, Sarah, a naked picture of himself, both Timmy and Sarah could be tried in court with charges of disseminating child pornography and possessing child pornography. These serious charges can result in having to register as a sex offender for several years, although the message may have been sent and received consensually by both parties. This...
Schools and programs can have assemblies and discuss the intent of people who sext and the consequences of sexting, whether they are minor or severe. The severe consequences of sexting or posting sexually explicit photos online can be psychologically damaging (ex. emotional trauma to the subject of the photo), especially if the distribution of the photo ends up in the wrong hands, or to an unintended audience. It is known that there is a "social disapproval over sexting, which causes many teens to not report such incidents (Terry, 2013, p. 153). Therefore we cannot be sure of how widespread the act of sexting is, in an accurate manner. Findings vary among researchers regarding the actual frequency of sexting as can be seen in numerous
It’s in the news, its on social media, and its on cell phones. “Sexting” is just one way that many people engage in sexual activity. Sexting is sending and/or receiving sexually explicit photos through messages on their cell phone or through social media. Many Americans today, especially teenagers, are familiar with sexting, however, may not be familiar with the psychology behind sexting; why do we want to do it, what does it makes us feel, and what are the consequences of sexting. Anywhere from 20 to 30 percent of American teenagers actively engage in sexting today.
Sexting is an issue that many people are still unclear on. Sexting is the exchanging of nude or seminude pictures or videos by cell phones (Hewitt and Driscoll). These media files can be exchanged by teens as young as 11 to married adults in their 40s. Sexting can hold serious consequences, such as being charged with child pornography, having to register in the sex offenders list, and even facing jail time (Hewitt and Driscoll). Even after knowing the gravity of the consequences, people continue to sext. The reason behind this phenomenon is still a mystery. Some believe that some individuals want to sext in order to gain the attention that they aren’t getting from significant other. A woman who had participated in sexting even claimed that a man she sexted with made her feel wanted (Tapper). The same article states that men believe “if you get a woman to send you a naked picture, you’re cool. It’s an ego boost.” Although many know sexting can be a crime, many individuals who sext do i...
Technology continues to grow and become part of everyday Life. However, more often times than not it becomes an obsession; many are consumed by the latest technological advances. People become inclined to develop addictive tendencies by never turning off or placing their devices on silent. Many agree the modern devices have helped to improve daily life at home and work. As part of today’s culture revolves around technological advancements such as phones, iPad’s; these devices are what is handed to children not as a learning tool but to distract them. Technology is a part of today’s generation; and children will continue to grow with technology, thus having a detrimental effect on their cognitive function, sociocultural and their well-being.
Sexting is ‘the act of sending, receiving, or retaining sexually explicit text messages, pictures, or video using cellular phones’, ( Crespi, Segool, 2013). It is viewed that those who participate in sexting are part of a deviant subculture. As technology has further advanced over the years, mobile phones in particular have the ability to record and send photos and videos and with this also comes the increase in sending explicit and suggestive material, mainly among teens. The content being sent can be anything from texts, semi nudity and even sexual picture and videos. From one generation to the next, teenagers and adults have already been exchanging sexually explicit messages and images, so sexting shouldn’t come as a huge shock. However one of the real concerns about sexting is how easily these images and videos can be spread and shared among large groups of people. Pictures or videos thought to be shared privately among people, can quickly become viral and can be seen by everyone and anyone. A prime example of this can be seen...
Minors are at risk in public places and online when with groups of people. Parents and other adults are responsible for keeping them safe from illegal and troublesome content on the internet. Their risks include harassment, bullying, sexual solicitation and exposure to illegal materials. Sexting, or sending sexual photos or messages puts the exposed minor at risk, as well as the person who receives the picture/message. They seem to be unaware of the personal and legal consequences involved in this behavior. Parents need to know who children are talking to and what they are posting online, limit internet usage, have clear expectations, and have a plan for safety.
Technology is so easy for the youth to access and there are many things that affect children through the use of technology. Children can misuse technology by accessing inappropriate materials, most kids today have smart phones and are able to access this so easily. Another reason children are affected by technology is that they are never taught how to properly use it, so they begin to think what they are doing is okay, when it is not, at a young age. My generation is more prone to the misuse of technology because they have grown up with it and it has been apart of their childhood. As technology becomes more developed it will be more vibrant in children’s lives and as they grow up it will become more of a part of their childhood. The more it is in a child’s life the more it will become more known. I did not receive a phone until I was 14 and it was not even an IPhone, but today there are children who have IPhones at the age of 8. This affects children because they are becoming more dependant on technology as a young child and they think that it is alright to depend on technology. They are given technology and they do not know how to use it properly nor do they know that it is not okay for them to depend on technology and that they need to depend on their minds to do things not just technology. The more technology comes involved in children’s lives the more it will affect them throughout their
In 2015, Raychelle Cassada Lohmann is a school counselor and coauthor of “The Bullying Workbook for Teens and described to us what is sexting. Lohmann says that sexting is sending, receiving and forwarding sexual pictures through text message or email. Lohmann says that the word “Sext” had been around since 2005. In her article, it says that before internet was established there were historical drawings sexually. Resent researchers have done studies and tested 606 students from ages 14-18 and 20% has said they have sent a nude of themselves. Some of the students have said they haven’t thought of the illegal consequences of sending the picture. And some of us may ask why the teens are doing this. Some say that it’s all out of love to their boyfriend or girlfriend, some say it’s under peer pressure and others are doing it as well and while other say that they weren’t thinking before they did it.
Today, there are approximately 400,000 sex offenders, half of adolescents being cyber bullied, and 20% of teenagers sending inappropriate pictures in the U.S. alone. Like anything else that has transformed people’s lives, technology has attracted a number of naysayers and detractors debating on whether technology is a good thing or a bad thing. Technology allows people keep in touch with friends and family and can make people’s lives easier, but technology has its downfall. Many teenagers have been cyber bullied, attacked by sexual predators, and reputations have been ruined from the effects of “sexting”, a combination of sex and texting. Although there are many benefits to using communication technology, the dangers of cyber bullying, sexual predators, and sexting far outweigh the benefits.
Almost every child between the ages of eight and twelve are getting cell phones. The average home in America has as many televisions as they do people. Only 20% of American homes do not have a computer. Technology is quickly becoming a new way of life. The amount of time people are on their devices is growing rapidly. According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for on average about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not realized yet how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems.
As disclosed in the article, The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child, Chris Rowan acknowledges, “Rather than hugging, playing, rough housing, and conversing with children, parents are increasingly resorting to providing their children with more TV, video games, and the latest iPads and cell phone devices, creating a deep and irreversible chasm between parent and child” (par. 7). In the parent’s perspective, technology has become a substitute for a babysitter and is becoming more convenient little by little. It is necessary for a growing child to have multiple hours of play and exposure to the outside world each day. However, the number of kids who would rather spend their days inside watching tv, playing video games, or texting is drastically increasing. Children are not necessarily the ones to be blamed for their lack of interest in the world around them, but their parents for allowing their sons and daughters to indulge in their relationship with technology so powerfully. Kids today consider technology a necessity to life, because their parents opted for an easier way to keep their children entertained. Thus resulting in the younger generations believing that technology is a stipulation rather than a
Today is an era of information explosion. In the past few years, many newly invented technological devices and software are now tightly integrated with our everyday lives. Today, people can look up almost any kind of information, make friends, communicate with others, and express ourselves with the simple touch of a button on a device we usually keep within arm’s reach. “Widespread use of technology is changing the way we work, learn, and communicate – even the way we carry out our regular, daily activities.”(Seifer and Mihalynuk) These devices not only benefit our livelihoods and increase our happiness, but they are also integral in advancing education, technology, development, and, in general, human evolution. The children of today, who have been raised in this era of information explosion, will undoubtedly reap such benefits and, in turn, advance society towards a better generation.
