Injustice and Retribution Towards Sex Trafficking Survivors who have endured hell and abuse after being trafficked into such an industry are often faced with a variety of consequences. Often times in many different countries penalties against sex trafficking are turned a blind eye and not a lot of justice serves the many women and children who are enslaved or kidnapped into this industry. Survivors are often left with post-traumatic stress disorder, various bodily and psychological diseases, and unplanned, failed or aborted pregnancies. In this case it is unfortunate that enslaved and abused victims are arrested as either illegal or as witnesses to prosecute against the convict(s) and kept in jail. In fact, there are very few shelters for these victims that provide rehabilitation or therapy and is not considered an ideal sanctuary for victims because convicts in the sex trafficking industry may track these women down and retaliate against them and those who have helped aid their escape and recovery. Victims of sex trafficking often face a different type of psychological and psychosocial trauma in comparison to general gender-based violence. In many regions of Asia, women and young girls are not recognized as hard working beings as men are and aren’t granted opportunities such as education or work. Because of this predicament, the demographic of these women are forced to care for their families or arranged into marriage not of their choosing by their own families. Many women are even sold by their own families into the trafficking business. In the film “Half the Sky” young girls describe their family’s abandonment, whether they were raped, exploited or sold as commodities to brothels.
