Sex Addicts Find Each Other Online
To her friends and family, Mary Smith* is a young, hard-working psychology student who never seems to have time for fun. What they don't know is that Mary is a sex addict. Recently, her boyfriend of three months discovered her secret. After they broke up, Mary took her addiction one step further and started experimenting with strangers and bondage, spanking and rape fantasies using the Internet.
Mary uses the Internet as her tool to find sex partners. Mary spends most of her time on the Internet exploring erotic Web sites. The Internet changed the way in which she communicates. Late night, she wanders nearby neighborhoods -- dressed sometimes as a dominatrix concealed by her outer coat -- to have sex with men. An honors student, she is terrified of getting caught but can not stop herself.
She had her first sexual encounter with a total stranger in the front seat of his car just blocks away from her college campus. She met this man on the Internet through a personal ad directed at college girls. Mary never had sex with strange men before the Internet. Now she spends morning, noon and night surfing adult chat rooms, pornography sites and alternate lifestyle Web sites.
“It all started when a friend called me up one day and told me that she was dating a man that she found off of the Internet.” Smith said. “Hours later I was hooked.”
Smith placed an ad of her own on an erotic Web site. In the ad, she included her picture, physical details and sexual fantasies. She changed her name to protect her identity.
“I got so many responses from guys; it freaked me out at first,” Smith said. “I went back to the sites minutes later because I couldn’t stop thinking about the idea of having sex with different men.”
The convenience of sexually oriented Web sites on the Internet gives the sex addict immediate access to potentially dangerous people. The seeker can become a victim of a sexually related crime.
Sexual addiction is defined as any sexually-related, compulsive behavior which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on family, friends and loved ones and one’s work environment.
This behavior is often accompanied by other addictions such as drinking, drugs and eating disorders. The sex addict engages in sex to feel good. They became so consumed with this feeling that they soon avoid their school work and other responsibilities.
The Internet is a place where one may pretend to be anyone or anything anyone wanted to- even if that means lying to thousands of innocent mothers who had experienced the loss of a child. Jenna Evans decided to post online about the death of her child, Bentley, who had passed away due to a brain disorder. Many mothers who had felt this same heartbreak befriended her. Evans posted later that her oldest child, Hailey, had come down with flu-like symptoms in which she was then admitted into the hospital with meningitis. Evans later posted that Hailey had passed away as well. Her entire virtual family rushed to her side via e-mails, phone calls, and texts. However, little did they know, Evans had been faking this life the entire time. The real individual in which Evans had stolen her photos and stories from confronted her, causing her to spill the beans that she had faked the entire thing, and that Bentley was made up while Hailey was a child she had during her teenage years that she gave up for adoption.
There are many different definitions in which people provide regarding addiction. May (1988) describes that addiction “is a state of compulsion, obsession, or preoccupation that enslaves a person’s will and desire” (p. 14). Individuals who suffer from addiction provide their time and energy toward other things that are not healthy and safe. The book
Sally Satel, author of “Addiction Doesn’t Discriminate? Wrong,” leads us down a harrowing path of the causes and effects that lead people to addiction. It can be a choice, possibly subconscious, or a condition that leads a person left fighting a lifelong battle they did not intend to sign up for. Mental and emotional health/conditions, personality traits, attitudes, values, behaviors, choices, and perceived rewards are just a few of the supposed causes of becoming an addict.
Have you ever wondered where the saying, ‘a picture says a thousand words’, come from? Well, I do not know who came up with this fantastic phrase, but nonetheless, I will be describing and analyzing two different magazine advertisements, trying to put in words what I think the advertisers wanted consumers to receive when those potential buyers viewed their ads. The two advertisements that I chose, Caress and Secret, try to encourage female consumers of all ages to purchase their hygiene products. Although both ads, Caress and Secret, appeal to the same gender with hygiene goods, they differ in design, text, and message. They attempt to please the female buyer with color, texture, and sexuality. This makes it prevalent, that the agents must grab the attention of possible buyers in order to sell their product. The advertisers must choose a variety of marketing strategies to the reach their targeted consumers.
... approach, selling men’s hygiene products, by appealing to a female audience. Though Old Spice targets and appeals to females, they do sell men’s hygiene products, thus, also attracting males and running an ad campaign that males can enjoy. The constant lack of shirt is just enough sex appeal to catch the audiences’ attention, without driving them away. The caricature of the perfect man easily enacting a variety of roles is entertaining for females and males. Additionally the commercial uses quick transitions and repetition to keep the audiences’ attention and to enforce the association of Old Spice with the ideal man. Old Spice sells their image as representing the perfect man, and hey if you can’t be him, well you can at least smell like him. With a humorous undertone and just enough sex appeal, the ad campaign is funny, attractive, appealing, and thus effective.
Some researchers believe sex addiction is not a disorder, but something that is excessively used. The internet has made everything so easy to access. Sex addiction is not even included in the category DSM-5. Based on the DSM-5 list of various disorders, the clinicians then decide whether an individual shows the characteristics of someone who has a psychological disorder. Maybe in the future, sexual addiction would have a chance to make it into a sub category of the DSM-5 instead of labeled in a single category alone. Sex addiction seems to become a problem when it is harming the family unit or the image of someone famous when it becomes headline news. We really do not know how many people suffer from this disorder. There has not been sufficient research about this, a situation which makes this topic very delicate. To some, the word addiction alone is without meaning. Most individuals that do suffer from this disorder do suffer from a chemical imbalance as well. A twelve-step program, self-help support groups, and individual counseling can be recommended for treatment. In recovery they will have to learn how to come to terms with their addiction and how to think differently if placed in certain scenarios. For example, they must live a life that does not put them in situations that may cause one to relapse. It is important to surround themselves around individuals that have
While alleged sex addictions have existed for many years, they have only recently been accepted as valid excuses for sexual deviancy. Attitudes toward sex addiction in the past offer a stark contrast to how it is viewed today, as the constantly medicalizing society insists on putting everything under the technical microscope. Sex addiction is commonly associated with a person’s inability to control his sexual behavior, implying an abnormally high sex drive and obsession with sex which have negative effects on his personal life (MedicineNet 2007, 1). Rather than breaking down the science behind the disorder, a customary practice in today’s medicalized society, older attitudes towards sex addiction placed it under the same light as alcoholism, where a lack of control and unwillin...
Old Spice, by appealing to women, making men want to look and smell like an Old Spice Man man, and by using old-fashion sex appeal, has created a successful advertising campaign. The promise in the Old Spice advertisements for women is that good looking, masculine, yet romantic men exist. For men, the promise is that he can become a superman and attract women by washing with their brand of body wash.
By sexualizing the advertisements, Old Spice has successfully found a way to appeal to the younger, modern generation of males, while also appealing to the desires of the female audience. Looking at the target audience of this ad, I feel it appeals to the emotional needs of women by giving them an ideal image of what a “real man” should look and smell like. For example, the man in the ad directly addresses the ladies in a sexy, self-confident voice, asking them to compare their man to him. The ad makes women want a fit, attractive man like the one in the ad, who will get them “two tickets to that thing they love” or give them expensive diamonds. All of these cues relate to gender stereotypes and masculine ideals that are linked to a woman’s satisfaction and desires. Thus, women are more likely to purchase Old Spice Body Wash for their man, in hopes that it will make them similar to the hyper masculine figure in the
One of the first opening lines from the commercial is “but if he stopped using lady scented body washes, and switched to Old Spice he could smell like he’s me.” Thus saying that other products smell like lady scented products. A reason why this product more attractive then other products is the whole commercial itself, it portrays a great life that would be attractive for a women to have. Another line that supports the idea of why this product does the job better is “Anything is possible when your man smells like Old Spice and not a lady” again comparing it to other products.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is based on the Salem Witch trials in 1692. In Salem the rules are very strict. They believe heavily in religion. The bible is the law and if you break the law you are probably doing deals with the devil. The book starts off with accusations of witchcraft by a group of girls, caught dancing in the wood in the late hours of the night. In Salem dancing is forbidden and since they did not want to get in trouble each of the girls accuse others for being seen with the devil. Nobody knows that they are lying besides a few people; and to prove the girls are lying, John Proctor tells his own side of the story and sacrifices what he has to protect other people. John Proctor is a hero in my eyes. He does some bad things throughout the story but he does make up for his actions and tries to bring people to justice.
As the marketing industry is taking over with daily magazines, television , flyers found everyday in our houses , both women and men whose jobs are in this field are known to get selected base in gender and physical traits as the companies direct advantage.very often use character development that could persuade more audience attention and expand business. One good example is companies like Old Spice or magazines as articles like Images of human sexuality in content with Women’s and Men’s Magazines by Christina N. Baker explains. Christina’s article supports the idea different character roles that are given for actors to play, are often selected in bases of is gender , skin tone and age like popular magazines or advertisements. In Old Spice a company that began as a line of men's fragrances created by Shulton and William Lightfoot Schultz in 1934 up to today, uses french women in advertisements with traditional clothing, dramatic makeup and character
Sexual compulsive behaviors have been around as long as many of the other disorders. However, there are certain specifics surrounding the issue that makes it more controversial, and therefore harder to diagnose and treat. The main argument is that it is an excuse for men that makes it okay for them to have affairs. This argument has been made partly because of certain movie stars and professional athletes, who use “sex addiction” as a way to save their careers and their relationships. However, this argument isn’t attributable to this subject because of the terminology that is used. The term “sex addiction” is not accurate for many reasons. When using the term, “addiction” one must be careful, because there is technical definitions of the word that need to be observed; these definitions are determined in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Ment...
Based on the results derived from their research which stated 60% of women usually buy body washes for their men, Old Spice decided to target both men and women. The men here refer to those aged 18 to 34 and the women are female shoppers (Effie Awards, 2011 and New Media Drivers License, 2011). Before this campaign, the initial target was men aged 18 to 60. A focus towards the younger generation is more plausible, especially since Old Spice’s competitor, Axe was targeting a younger market as well (Young, 2010).
The sex addiction test was created to help individuals identify whether or not they may have a sexual addiction. It can be difficult to identify these types of issues within ourselves, as our egos often get in the way. This test can be a great tool to help pinpoint what’s really going on.
