A burn is damage to the skin or deeper tissues. It can be caused by hot liquids, electricity, fire, the sun or chemicals. The three different classifications of burns are first-degree, second-degree, and third-degree. The degree of the burn depends on how deep and how severely they penetrate the skins surface. First degree burns, also called superficial burns, only affect the outer layer of skin. The outer layer of skin is called the epidermis. The burn will appear red, painful, and dry. It will have no blisters and will blanch with applied pressure. The sensation is usually intact and is mild to moderate pain. They usually heal in three to six days. Second degree burns, also called partial thickness burns, affects the entire epidermis and part of the dermis. The burn will appear red, blistered, and can be swollen, painful, and will blanch with applied pressure. The sensation is intact with severe pain. Some home remedies for burns include cool water, cool compress, antibiotic ointments, aloe vera and honey. Some home remedies that you should not use for burns are egg whites, ice, cotton balls, and butter. Butter and egg whites haven’t been proven to be effective. Cotton balls may stick to the burn and increase the risk of infection. Using ice can make the damage worse. Most people will survive a second-degree burn that affects seventy percent of the body area. Few can survive a third-degree burn covering fifty percent of the burned area.
