The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is written by Stephen R. Covey is a book that was written for self-motivation. In this book Covey describes how to become a more effective and motivated individual throughout your life. He gives specific pointers and details that lead you to this effectiveness throughout the whole book. The basic goal in the book is to demonstrate how these specific seven habits can benefit your life greatly and make your life for meaningful and effective. Covey explains that if you are willing to make the changes that are necessary you will become a more effective individual. He describes that there are seven habits that make this all possible. The First habit is to be proactive, or “proactivity”, it is explained that being proactive means that we as humans are responsible for our own lives. Our performance in life is up to us and is not the result of things that have happened or experiences but the choices that we choose to make and how we view our lives as a whole. It is our obligation to choose how we respond to the experiences in our lives. Take for instance, Viktor Frankl, he was a prisoner of the death camps in Nazi Germany. Frankl had terrible experiences such as being tortured, starved, being naked, and losing almost his whole family. At the time while all of this was going on, Frankl decided he was not going to let all of this to affect him. He became aware that he had the freedom to choose his own response to what was happening and the meaning to all of it which then in turn gave him self-fulfillment. As I look at the statement “What I do is largely controlled by actions of others”, I am certain the author of this book would most definitely disagree with this. Covey explains, “Each dimension is important, it only becomes optimally effective as we deal with all four dimensions”. Each and every one of these will have a positive impact on your life as long as you practice in an effective way. It is important to develop a sense of what is most important to your one true self and to others around you as well. These seven habits are very important to use in our everyday lives and with practice and dedication involved, you will succeed in obtaining a more effective life. You just have to commit to make progress and improve. Even though this may be a constant battle, you have to remind yourself that these habits and practices is what will make you a more successful and valuable individual and that is what is important.
Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
Schall describes ‘self discipline’ to be a fundamental principal that will ultimately enrich the ‘self.’ Hence, to posses qualities of dedication through a set of self-discipline habits are virtues that will enable to comprehend the truth in our reality. Indeed, the author makes a key-point by explaining that one must be able to achieve order in our mundane lives, from what “deviates from what it is we know we ought to be or do.” Therefore, one must be able to overcome any obstacle that may impede from reaching our goal of seeking knowledge and understanding. However, self-discipline is only the “beginning of wisdom, not its end.” Hence, wisdom may be achieve through a personal library, by studying the greatest minds that had existed in the past and perhaps, in the our present time, in which they have come close and/or achieve the goal one purposely
Habit 3 is Put First Things First. Personally, I struggled with putting first things first as I was a procrastinator but, I have finally conquered myself and I am no longer in Quadrant 1! You see, there are different time quadrants which tell you if you are a 1. Procrastinator, 2. Prioritizer, 3. Yes-Man and 4. Slacker. You need to always stay on top of things and stay in quadrant 2 but it’s not easy, so you must work very hard for it to become a natural thing for you. Another way to becoming a prioritizer is to realize what your big rocks are and what your small rocks are. In other words, take notice of what is important first and those will be your big rocks to accomplish first. Only then will you have space for all the small rocks. Lastly, don’t let fear control you, control your fear. It’s okay to make mistakes if you’re trying to do the right thing. On page 121 in the 7 Habits book, Sean Covey says “Winning means rising each time you fail.” This is telling you that although you failed, if you are willing to rise and try again and pick up your broken pieces, that is winning. This is a unique aspect about the book that keeps the reader interested in the constant new stories instead of reading one longer one and easily getting bored with it. Duhigg uses definition to explain exactly what a habit is to the reader by providing examples that show the science behind habits and also showing how small changes can make a huge difference. The many examples also strengthen Duhigg’s arguments because he uses relatable stories that the reader can connect to and see habits in their own lifestyle that are similar to those stated in the book.
The Seven Habits Profile is divided into nine categories. The first two categories are considered foundational habits, and the remaining seven categories are considered the Seven Habits. I thought a great deal about my answers as I worked through my Seven Habits Profile. The profile has provided me with insight into my strengths and weaknesses. My scores range from fourteen to seventeen with eighteen being the highest achievable score. Meaning, I scored outstanding in five categories and very good in four categories. The results indicate that I am a very good leader however, there is room for improvement. I can utilize my assessment to become a more effective leader.

Following the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success has made me the person that I am today. The laws that we have followed have been the Law of Pure Potentiality, the Law of Giving, the Law of Karma or Cause and Effect, the Law of Least Effort, the Law of Intention and Desire, the Law of Detachment, and the Law of Dharma or Purpose in Life. These laws have taught me that success is not a destination it is a journey. They have taught me that true success is the unfolding of the divinity within us. And following these steps has helped me to find success with in myself.
This was not as easy a read for me. I suppose I am a victim of my generational upbringing, in that, I feel the need to be informed in an entertaining manner. This book has good information, but I had to continually check my focus. Those times when I was truly drawn in were the times when the writer was relating back to a story from his life or others and how it worked in to the particular habit he was teaching at that time. That being said, the following areas are where I believe I can use to make myself and my team better.

The quote above demonstrates how many different factors all input into the person that we become. A person’s habitus is all of those factors within them. Not only does the habitus concern a person’s behaviour and morals, the habitus also affects the choices a person makes about their body. “Through the habitus, society is impressed on the individual, not only in mental habits, but even more in corporeal ones.” (Hanks, 2005) The habitus is formed from the collective structure of the group the individual is part of, such as social class sub-groups. It is also formed from the individual experiences that the person goes through.
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2004) has become the cornerstone of leadership and management wisdom. The habits emphasize personal responsibility and personal leadership. There is challenge in living everyday under the guidance of the habits but there is also great benefit as living the habits can influence everything we do in life. I was introduced to Covey’s seven habits through a one day seminar at my workplace several years ago. I learned some of the terminology and a few of the concepts but never really understood the power of the practical application of the habits. Reading the Covey materials has taught me that life is not about all the tasks that I accomplish but instead about accomplishing the tasks that support what is important to me. Covey has taught me that there are elemental components that are applicable across the many roles that I have in my life. Those universal elements are integrity, vision, discipline, and passion. Embracing these ideas has opened my eyes to the endless applications and benefits of living the seven habits.

The above elements might apply in my life in the many ways, for example it is important to live in moderation. If I live in moderation than I would be helping the world around us, by maintaining our resources, for we are in ecological crisis. If I make good judgements about the things I do and the things I chose to use then possibly others will do the same, and maybe we can slow this erosion of natural material from our world. Lastly, if I maintain strength and courage toward these ecological problems, then maybe I could help others understand our problem and get their support in this struggle. It is important to stay strong, in order to fight issues such as nuclear and ecological issues.
