Child Observation: Imani Booker The setting of this observation takes place in a suburban home in southern Maryland. The home belongs to the grandmother of the subject. The day is before thanksgiving and there are a lot of family members present. Six people other than Imani are here; her older brother who seemed to be 2 years old, her male cousin who seems to be the same age as her, her grandmother, two aunts, an uncle, and her mother. There are three boys total and four females, including Imani. The home has three floors, with most of the activity taking place in the kitchen and family room. In the family room, there were couches, a tread mill, television, and a set of steps that lead to the kitchen. The kitchen has a table, an island, appliances, …show more content…
She spoke English and Spanish with enough fluency that other people could understand her. She tended to stutter when she was very excited about what she had to say and was coached by her mother to slow down and gather her thoughts. She was able to count to twenty in Spanish and to 100 in English. Her English vocabulary was much more extensive than her Spanish vocabulary because she only learned Spanish at school and did not have anyone else in Spanish besides Kayden that knew Spanish. When counting, Imani used her fingers to show what she was counted and from her facial expressions thought hard about the next number that would come next. She understood the differences in size and would use words such as “taller” and “shorter” to describe the people around her. Imani also used the word “more” when she saw how much food she had compared to Kayden. They both had the same amount of food but Kayden’s food seemed to cover more of the plate. According to Piaget, Imani was struggling with the ability conserve (Berk, 2010, p. 321). Piaget’s limitations of preoperational thought describe the inability to conserve as a child having centered and focused thinking. Imani could only focus on “one aspect of the situation”, which was that Kayden’s plate was more covered than hers, ultimately meaning he had more food. She also could not reverse the order of how the food was placed on the
Stackhouse 1 Stackhouse 2 Cole Stackhouse Hensley Honors English/ Fourth Period 27 January 2016 Three Thanksgivings When the short story Three Thanksgivings begins, Mrs. Delia Morrison, a fifty year old widowed woman, finishes reading two letters. One of the letters is from her son Andrew, and the other from her daughter Jean, both inviting her to have Thanksgiving dinner with her. Along with this request, they mention her selling her house, however, each child has different ideas for where the money will go.
In Truman Capote’s The Thanksgiving Visitor, a connection is exposed between the main character, Buddy, and his elderly best friend, Miss Sook, which serves as the center point of the story and reveals much about the intricacies of human nature. An autobiographical tale, the author describes his childhood of the 1930s in rural Alabama. An 8-year-old orphan who lives with his four cousins of sixty-plus years, he is an outcast among his peers who finds school and life outside the household quite scary. This dread of school is brought about by the neighborhood bully, Odd Henderson, who constantly beats and picks on Buddy any chance he can get. In fact, Buddy only truly finds himself happy when accompanied by the eccentric Miss Sook and her dog, Queenie. The story follows Buddy, a young Capote, as he goes through the struggles of loneliness, envy, friendship, and empathy. Through these trials, with the aid of the old spinster, Miss Sook, Buddy matures and grows to learn about life lessons.
from the first bar, she quickly swung her feet over to the side for leg support.
Thanksgiving is a holiday that began hundreds of years ago. It was a celebration of many different things. One of the most important reasons for the celebration was thankfulness that many of the Pilgrims survived the first year of their new lives in America. Today, however, Thanksgiving seems to have a very different meaning to people. Their main focus is not being thankful for the things they have, but wanting more.
The facility I did my observation at was Tutor Time in Fairfield, and I arrived there at 3:15pm. When I arrived there, I could instantly see that it was a child centered program by the feel of the artwork the kids had made that were on the walls, the passing classrooms and it smelled like sugar cookies throughout the building. It was very quiet in the office area and in the halls when I was walking to the class of preschoolers.
Observation is very important in young children because that is how you get to know a child better. While observing how a child interacts with their peers, adults, and how they behave in different settings, you are getting to know the child without speaking to them.
In this assignment I am going to describe a child observation that I have done in a nursery for twenty minutes in a play setting. I will explain the strengths and weaknesses of naturalistic observation through the key developmental milestones based in Mary Sheridan (2005) check-list and provide a theoretical explanation to support the naturalistic observation.
This paper will explore my findings of my observation of a young boy, age 28 months, named Jax. Jax is fun little man and happens to be my nephew. I will discuss the attributes and characteristics of Jax that I witnessed in the few hours that I had observed him. Starting with motor development skills, I observed that Jax is a very favorable walker. He is well coordinated, and loves to run. Still, just like any two-year-old, he still stumbles frequently. He loves to play with his toys and can pick up and grasp his toys well. He is great at maneuvering his toys and putting them where he wants them. I did notice that he did favor his right hand regularly. Jax did love to throw things, and catch them as well. However, he seemed to be a bit better at catching things, more so than he was at throwing
The couple also alluded that they never had one on one time to get to know each other, and this was never established in the beginning of the relationship. The couple has raised four successful young adults. They are all well educated and have great credit, which is one of the family rules. Another rule within this family unit is they must spend all the major holidays together, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving. A Thanksgiving ritual is everyone must state what they are thankful for before eating the Thanksgiving meal.

There are many types of families in the world; there are families that are loud and families that are quiet, families that are close, and families that do not even eat together. For each different type of family there is a different style of family dinner that they have. For example, the family dinners of a quiet family do not involve much talking and often end quickly even when there are guests; however, family dinners of a loud family, much like the one that I observed, last longer periods of time and tend to have people either talking over one another, or there are main people in the group talking while everyone is either having a side conversation or is listening attentively. Family dinners have a specific dynamic and certain social conventions,
I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Luna. Jeffrey has taken quite a liking to being a big brother. He likes to hold and rocker her and helps with feeding her. Jeffrey is still a slow-to warm child. He can communicate fairly well and is now using mostly complete sentences and seems to understand most of what I say. He occasionally makes errors of overregularization. He has taken an interest in music and singsongs even though he usually repeats a certain part a lot. I encourage this by taking him to local performances of children’s musicals. Jeffrey has learned the routines pretty well and is reasonably cooperative for his age. He is rarely aggressive to adults or other children. Jeffrey’s fantasy play has become more elaborate and sometimes includes superheroes or cartoon
On a Tuesday evening, I had a conflict with my fiancé about what restaurant we should go to for dinner. The conflict was interpersonal it involved two separate people. My fiancé wanted to eat simple cuisine. He wanted a hamburger or pasta, while I on the other hand was craving seafood. Our dilemma was that we both adamantly wanted to consume different food. My fiancé generally values simplicity while I value the idea of variety and I usually tend to be adventurous with food. I responded to the conflict by competing and attempting to promote my preferences. My argument was that we habitually eat pasta and simple meals on most occasions due to their convenience and accessibility. My fiancé unfortunately does not favor or appreciate seafood. He also suggested that we carefully screen

We all, probably, have a story involving a drunk family member at a party or family reunion. Let’s just say my family has plenty. My uncle on my dad’s side of the family loves his tequila and brings his own bottle(s) to any family gathering. The particular family gathering you are about to hear about happened when I was about five years old. I can remember bits and pieces of the event in question but, the main part of the story happened past my bedtime.
