Service learning will be vital for me to my continued development to becoming a well rounded, experienced student because the experience will instill within me the values of giving back and interpersonal relationships. I have chosen to seek the achievement of these values and much more at Horton’s Kids in the neighborhood of Anacostia.
I’m motivated by my own personal experiences and the challenges I have had to overcome to get to where I am today. Every individual has their own unique learning style. I was a fast learner, but I learned best when the material was taught to me step by step in a gradual process. The opportunity to work alongside and serve the youth Anacostia’s youth has the potential to be deeply personal and meaningful because I’ll be working with children who are in the most influential stages of learning. I know what it was like for me coming up as a young child being faced with numerous academic challenges when I couldn’t understand what I was studying or when I need more help on a particular topic.

Small acts of kindness that are done everyday by ordinary people who simply just care are motivating influencers for me when to volunteer. Witnessing and generosity and empathy for others are what inspire me to keep giving back. It’s also motivating for me to look back on the support and altruism of those who supported me during the obstacles I faced. Many of us have experienced challenges or moments that have shaped us into who we are today and the work we dedicate our lives to. That idea alone is what sustains me in the nonprofit sector and world of volunteerism. This will be a volunteer experience where I will be personally invested in the cause, mission, and work of Horton’s Kids, which would reflect in my level of
The functional area of service-learning is currently emerging as an acknowledged department at an institution of higher education. The theoretical roots of service learning go back to John Dewey, and the early twentieth century. However, current research on service-learning pedagogy dates back only to the early 1990’s. Best practices for the field are still being created as more and more new offices are springing up on campuses throughout the United States and institutions internationally. The reason this functional area is becoming ever popular is due to the positive impact it has on students and most all educational outcomes.
There were quite many relations made between my service learning experiences and themes addressed in the course. Some of the connections were about human self-respect, unity, and fairness. The social ties hold people together and can support the people who do not have the power to help each other. It was interesting for me to employ my skills and knowledge I learned in the classroom to serve those who need help.
Service learning is a rather new concept, but it has proven advantageous in connecting students with their communities when paired with reflection and when included in school curriculum. . Weigert’s (1998) view of ser...
important issues, gain new perspectives and provides learning experiences for volunteers as well as individuals from underserved groups. Because of the numerous benefits, college students should enroll in the Service Learning courses or service learning based programs. These programs allows students to move away from the dualism versus unity point of view and focus on reciprocity and provides the skills necessary to approach future service experiences with a service learning perspective.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . Each school, because of government mandate, has to provide services for exceptional students. The textbook Human Diversity in Education defines exceptional students as “those eligible for special educational services” (Cushner, McClelland & Safford, 2011). There are several categories for exceptional student but they all fall under the Ability/Disability continuum. Some of the categories for exceptional students are the: intellectually gifted, specific learning disability, emotionally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally handicapped, and physically handicapped. In this paper the specific type of students that will be discussed, fall under the disabled side of the continuum. As one can see from the list above there are various types of disabilities that can affect students. One of the disabilities that affect many students in schools today is known as the Learning Disability (LD). Students with learning disabilities, also known as specific learning disabilities, tend to be of at least average intelligence. Of at least average intelligence is the key phrase. A learning disability is defined as “a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information” (National Center for Learning Disabilities,). Learning disabilities can affect students in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling, reasoning, and mathematics. A student that has a learning disability can at times suffer for a social anxiety. Though social anxiety can be something minor, for students with this disability 2011it can cause major problems. Their social anxiety is caused by fearing that they will not fit in because they are unable to understand or process the information a...
Service-learning is defined as a “course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (Bringle & Hatcher, 1995).
A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there, and what I ultimately learned from this experience.
And most recently I decided to donate twelve inches of my hair to Locks of Love, an organization that makes and donates wigs to children who are struggling with cancer. I no longer see volunteering as a way to sign off hours of service but instead something impactful. The reason why I volunteer and will continue to volunteer is because I know that I could make a difference by reaching out and touching the lives of others in a positive way. After seeing how grateful these women were for the basic necessities us more privileged people take for granted, I came to an understanding that in order to better our community we must all help one another. Through this experience I was able to attain satisfaction by helping others who couldn't fully help themselves and I learned to give back to those who need it the
Following participation in an Engaged Department Institute sponsored by Campus Compact, a service-learning requirement was instituted for all majors in the department studied beginning Fall 2002. All faculty were encouraged to incorporate service-learning in their courses. A training session on service-learning was the centerpiece of a departmental retreat in January 2002. In order to develop closer relationships with community agencies, the department hosted a faculty-partnership luncheon the following fall semester. Potential community partners were invited to meet with faculty in an effort to forge new relationships with the University. In order to institutionalize service-learning, all recruitment advertisements specifically mention service-learning and all new hires are expected to include service-learning components in their courses. As a consequence of these efforts, this department has gone from teaching only a few courses with service-learning components to offering twenty five different classes (thirteen courses) by Fall 2002.
Provide Service-learning opportunities as a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. This way students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their
There are always some activities for the betterment of a community. If we get involved ourselves in those, we will certainly have some useful experiences in our life too. Service Learning is one of those activities, and it is primarily a service of a community with the application of the knowledge and guidance obtained in the college. Moreover, Service Learning is a way for a student to practice the education that he learns from the college, which in result strengthens the student academically. As a result, A student can be aware of the social issues through Service Learning, and he can apply his ideas and knowledge to come up with a solution. Similarly, Service learning also provides a source of communicating with the professional of the community, which can be helpful for a student regarding the education and employment. There are many organizations in our society, which create the opportunity for Service Learning. The ones that I am most interested in are the American Red Cross and City House homeless shelter. I like these organizations because these both are doing wonderful job b...
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
Julie M. Novak, Vern Markey, and Mike Allen, all professors in communications at creditable colleges, have each earned varying degrees in their field and give them all credibility to speak on the topic of service learning. Although, Novak, Markey, and Allen’s article is a Meta-Analysis, meaning that they are using other peoples works and studies to then form a basis off of what has already been done, they use it to argue how service learning effects students. The design of the studies in the article only has a sample size of only nine service learning studies. With the nine studies, Novak, Markey, and Allen, argued that service learning was very beneficial for the student in multiple ways. Service learning benefited the student with cognitive
When thinking about doing my service learning project I had to think about so many things. The very first thing that I had to think about was doing a group or individual project. When doing a group project you don’t want to be the only person that actually does the work. You know that if you do a project alone you will be doing all the work and you will have no time to procrastinate at all. I chose to do a group project with my roommate at the time and a girl that was in my suite at the time.
