I did my service learning project with Blugold Beginnings as a college mentor at Altoona High school. The project has been impactful to me, because I learned a lot about the struggles of adolescents who experience hardship not only in exploring their identities but also in school and family settings. The service learning project broke the rebellious adolescents stereotype for me and allow me to see each students I work with as individuals and realizing that their problems come from the environment that they live in. I regretted not getting along with the students sooner, and if I had a chance to do this project for the second time, I would want to get to know the students sooner.

Those served by the organization are students, and the site where I was working at serve high school students. They have struggles that are similar to me, such as being stressed out or anxious about their academic achievement; as young people, they have some interests that are similar to me. The difference is that many of the students have been through a lot of difficulties, such as divorce, death of a family member, family dysfunction, mental health issues, poverty, and so …show more content…
Blugold Beginnings can only be most efficient in helping with homework and letting students relieve their stress, but it could not help with the educational system, family dysfunctions, poverty, or mental health problems. Therefore, community needs to be more involved with improving high school education system and help adolescents address the obstacles that they face. After this project, I also understand how important it is for individuals to become involved with their community, because sometimes just your presence means a lot to
My favorite service project was my silver award for girl scouts. Before Jamie Lince, Faith Brown, and I did the silver award the hoophouse by the elementary school was very rundown. There were holes in the plastic, weeds in the beds, and the wood chips in the aisles were worn down. The hoophouse couldn’t be used. We wanted to fix that problem. First we applied for grants. I never knew how many steps or how much time this would take. It really taught me how to handle deadlines so things get turned in on time. It also taught me that there are people that want to support you, and you just need to find them. The two grants that we received were a Lowes grant for fifteen-hundred dollars and a seed grant from Van Atta’s. The second step was to get people to help weed out the beds so we could plant the seeds we got from the grant. This took a few hours and a lot of people from the community showed up to help. The Lowes grant was used for the plastic that goes on the outside of the hoophouse and new wood chips for the aisles in the hoophouse. We had to have the help of Mr. Montry who makes hoop house...
With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . In other words, preventing conflicts and improving the lives of many different individuals using knowledge.
Each school, because of government mandate, has to provide services for exceptional students. The textbook Human Diversity in Education defines exceptional students as “those eligible for special educational services” (Cushner, McClelland & Safford, 2011). There are several categories for exceptional student but they all fall under the Ability/Disability continuum. Some of the categories for exceptional students are the: intellectually gifted, specific learning disability, emotionally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally handicapped, and physically handicapped. In this paper the specific type of students that will be discussed, fall under the disabled side of the continuum. As one can see from the list above there are various types of disabilities that can affect students. One of the disabilities that affect many students in schools today is known as the Learning Disability (LD). Students with learning disabilities, also known as specific learning disabilities, tend to be of at least average intelligence. Of at least average intelligence is the key phrase. A learning disability is defined as “a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information” (National Center for Learning Disabilities,). Learning disabilities can affect students in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling, reasoning, and mathematics. A student that has a learning disability can at times suffer for a social anxiety. Though social anxiety can be something minor, for students with this disability 2011it can cause major problems. Their social anxiety is caused by fearing that they will not fit in because they are unable to understand or process the information a...
This course has taught me a lot about the role human service workers have in communities and what communities need from human services. I learned about why this type of work is so important and was able to seen that importance first hand through my observation hours at the Dorothy Day Center.
Despite many obstacles in my life, my experience performing community service stands out as the most memorable. I was sixteen at the time, and just beginning my first job at a fast food restaurant. I had to learn how to balance between community service in the morning and my employment at the local Wendy’s. It was very stressful and influential at the same time.
This semester has given me the opportunity to engage in a service learning project for the Centerville community. My service project included providing an hour of life saving technique skills at the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church in Centerville to the adolescent bible study group. This service opportunity has enabled me to meet the nursing program outcome number three by being a compassionate and conscientious nurse who serves humanity and the profession of nursing in the spirit of Christian caring. For example, we had a devotion and prayer before teaching the adolescents; this helped engage in Christian caring and learning. Lastly, this project has given the adolescents of the Centerville SDA church the education on saving lives while being children of God.
Lastly, based on this project, it influenced me to possibly try new service projects in the future which are similar to this one. I may want to help bake some sort of treat for an organization or event in the future, similarly to how people had brought cookies that they had made to put on the table for the egg hunt. Also, I may want to do something with children in the future such as to help be a teen group leader at the week-long Vacation Bible School over the summer. I may even just want to help in setting up or cleaning up some sort of event in the
My first shift started on February 21, 2014, there was not a training session or orientation. The majority of the work at the site was something one would do around their own home. As soon as I stepped in and introduced myself to the site supervisor, I was put to work. I started with making juice and filling the container with water. Then I worked with another volunteer putting warning label on boxes to warn people of hot plate. Then it was time to open up and start serving food, I was on desert duty. It was easy, which allowed me to make observations and make mental notes. I noticed the majority of the people vising this particular soup kitchen in Livermore were Caucasian, and varied in ages. There are some that appears to be in their 60s, and a couple groups that appears to be in the low 20s and homeless. Although majority of the customers are homeless, some have a house of their own. Ev...
For my service learning project I worked with the challenger learning center by helping them get ready, setup, and working with them at their booth during the pumpkins in the park event. This service learning project not only gave me a chance to study myself and how I work and act with new people, but it also gave me a chance to study other people and how they work with the people they know and don’t know. The weird thing about this service learning project that I didn’t realize until I got to the building to volunteer was that I had been to the Challenger Learning Center as a kid. It was really cool get to go back into the place that helped me realized my true passion for science and space. After we were done with our volunteering they let
For my service learning project, I went to Jan Brzechwy Polish School to volunteer. I had a great experience, and I did not expect it to go that smoothly. This experience allowed me to visit the same Polish school that I attended for twelve years every Friday night. Although it was hard giving up my Fridays to learn Polish, I am so grateful that I did because knowing the language that my parents know and communicate with is rewarding even though we primarily speak in English to each other. The students primarily spoke English to us because they knew how, but I did speak Polish to some of the students who were working on their assignments. This experience was beneficial because I was able to help students one on one and see them become more comfortable.
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart. I hope that I touched each student in a special way, because the students that I got the opportunity to help learn touched my
Throughout my years in high school service learning has always been important, in that it helped me to broaden my skills involving leadership, career, and helped me realize the importance of giving back to the community. A significant event that I was able to perform service learning at was on Service Saturday’s at the Garden of the B’s. The activities done at the Garden of the B’s were learning the methods for planting specific plants, as well as understanding how to properly water them. In addition, while helping Mr. Jung, the environmental science teacher, it was appalling to realize how this vision and dream of how the garden would look like soon became tangible. As, with the planting of various plants the garden was able to really
I used to hate community service. I only did it if it was a requirement for graduation or for a program. Even when I did community service, I still waited until the very last opportunity to do it. When I heard the words community service, all I could picture is cleaning Philadelphia parks or streets that were filled with trash in either the cold or heat. My mind always went to that space because that 's what my first few encounters with community service consisted of. My high school always had us cleaning something; one time we re-landscaped the parking lot of a homeless shelter. Another time, we cleaned up the weeds out of the loading docks of the non-profit food bank Philabundance. One time my mom made me volunteer
