This semester has given me the opportunity to engage in a service learning project for the Centerville community. My service project included providing an hour of life saving technique skills at the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church in Centerville to the adolescent bible study group. This service opportunity has enabled me to meet the nursing program outcome number three by being a compassionate and conscientious nurse who serves humanity and the profession of nursing in the spirit of Christian caring. For example, we had a devotion and prayer before teaching the adolescents; this helped engage in Christian caring and learning. Lastly, this project has given the adolescents of the Centerville SDA church the education on saving lives while being children of God. Determining the needs of the Centerville SDA church involved …show more content…
One of the major contributions I have made is making a pre-test and post-test for the Bible study class. The reason behind this is to evaluate how effective our teaching was during the presentation. Another outcome from the pre/posttests was to analyze and compile my own statistics for our project in regards to knowledge of life saving techniques. During my calculations of the statistics helped me gain a better understanding of how much information the class knew before the presentation and after. Lastly, being a team leader during this project has helped me learn how to manage and work with individuals who are not interested in participating in a group. This has helped me as an individual and a nursing student gain a professional attitude and learn how to approach individuals like this. I am confident that in the future I will be able to use these skills to help work through disagreements in my professional career as a

I will contribute to the mission of the Nurse Corps Scholarship program by continuing to provide care to individuals in underserved communities. Medically underserved communities involve racial minorities, offenders and ex-offenders, crime or abuse victims, LGBTQ citizens, people with AIDS, and those that are economically disadvantaged. I was born in the small town of Monroeville, AL. It is a great town but it does not have the best resources when it comes to health care. Most members of this town, including my family, would bypass the hospital there and go to the one in the next town simply because they feel
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. The mission of CCML was knowing, growing and loving. They seek to live out our mission by worshipping together as a local community of believers, growing in spiritual maturity through discipleship, education, and small groups, caring for one another within the context of the larger church body and small groups, and Communicating the love of Christ to our world, both through local outreach and global mis...
On the first evening of service, I was prepared, yet scared that I would say something wrong or the children there would not accept my ideas. When I arrived, the group was small, as promised since it was a Saturday and many of the hospital guests were out with their parents or home for a fun weekend of activities. The children and youth who were there, however, gathered 'round for some of the activities I had planned. First, I made it a point to learn everyone's name which meant that I p...
It is apparent that the issues are similar at Willow Creek and New Hope, as both have experienced great growth. They are addressing these issues by adding additional services and by assignment of small groups or small ministries to meet their congregation's needs. They have been successful in addressing the issue based on each church's individual needs. Willow Creek has added services to accommodate the service seekers or the un-churched. New Hope attempts to match congregation member's needs through joining auxiliaries or other ministries of the church.

Through the traumatic experience of my father’s illness, a positive and optimistic perspective of commitment to nursing career evolved. My journey of becoming a nurse and commitment of shining a bright light on another individual life has been my life long goal. I moved to the United States in early 1980 and with God help and guidance, I followed the nursing career and promised to make a small difference. During my first years as a nursing student, I took a part-time volunteered position as a candy-stripe and a part-time position as a nurse aid in a community hospital to provide relief and support to hospital staffs. I rocked and read poems for babies in the nursery, as a nurse aid I assist nurses with vital signs, blood pressures, fill ice pitchers in patient rooms, runs specimens to labs and sit with patients in the room and feed patients. I still volunteer in my hospital oncology department and the underserved and homeless clinics with several Emory physicians at the Good Samaritan Health Center, Mercy Care and National AIDS Education and Services for Minorities (NAESM) all in Fulton County, Ga, because it gave me fulfillment and appreciative of life
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . In other words, preventing conflicts and improving the lives of many different individuals using knowledge.
This course has taught me a lot about the role human service workers have in communities and what communities need from human services. I learned about why this type of work is so important and was able to seen that importance first hand through my observation hours at the Dorothy Day Center.
The church building’s owner, an elderly female who struggled to get to Sunday worship, asked the leadership at Bethia if we could lead a worship service at that facility on the
The following proposal will provide and outline the reason there is a need for citylife church to develop, establish, and move forward with a full time counseling center. The purpose of the citylife counseling center is to become a formidable and intentional community minded service provider in the field of counseling not only for church attendees, but likewise with those seeking professional faith- based counseling and lay counseling as prospective counselees within the Tampa Bay area.
If anything this experience has made me more confident in my abilities as a student nurse and in myself as a person. I feel like I have been in more disempowering situations than I have empowering, so it’s hard connecting this experience to previous times. If anything, this has taught me how a clinical setting should be in terms of nurse to nurse relationships. Others shouldn’t be made to feel isolated, inferior, or incompetent, especially because they are a student nurse.
There are literally so many and I know you have multiple lists of them from multiple sources, so I’ll try to be breif. I have always loved working at food pantries and doing drives because I aways get to see the direct impact I can have on someone. When I go to APTT, I get the opportunity to talk to the patrons there and they can tell me their stories and honestly sometimes the stories are boring, but I can feel good because I at least gave them a listening ear. There has also been stories that just open my eyes maybe because I had unconsiously judge someone or because I just wasn’t aware of a hardship, but either way, one can (and I certainly have) gain a lot from
I used to hate community service. I only did it if it was a requirement for graduation or for a program. Even when I did community service, I still waited until the very last opportunity to do it. When I heard the words community service, all I could picture is cleaning Philadelphia parks or streets that were filled with trash in either the cold or heat. My mind always went to that space because that 's what my first few encounters with community service consisted of. My high school always had us cleaning something; one time we re-landscaped the parking lot of a homeless shelter. Another time, we cleaned up the weeds out of the loading docks of the non-profit food bank Philabundance. One time my mom made me volunteer
