Dogs can carry out multiple tasks which prove they are a large asset in fields in which man can possess flaw and error that can be unforgiving and not to mention deadly. For decades dogs have been aiding in the works of keeping crime low, prevent terrorism, detecting explosives and patrolling for drugs and narcotics that can be dangerous to others and to please humans more than any other animal. Dogs can contribute greatly in the health and safety of our nation.

First, dogs start their training by being introduced to the scent of an explosive (McKenna 2). The dogs are trained to identify at least a dozen kinds of explosives (Blackwell 2) which in turn, help the dogs identify and detect a variety of explosives. Later, the training progressively gets harder as the dogs must find an explosive, even with a multitude of scents, because terrorists have tried to mask up explosives with a variety of scents such as peanuts, cookies, perfumes, and even dirty diapers. Although this rarely fools a dog due to the extensive training, terrorists still experiment with bomb concealment using scents (McKenna 2). …show more content…

Dogs are used to keep crime low, reports of a subway which have had at least 20 muggings in the timeframe of a couple of months, later dogs were emplaced down in the dangerous subway and the muggings ceased quickly (Bilger 2). Dogs also patrol crowded places to sniff unattended luggage, vehicles, and planes, for illegal or suspicious or dangerous contents, such as explosives or drugs (Dogs on Duty 1).
