Have you ever had the feeling like someone is watching you? That feeling is a 6th sense developed in our primal stage, so next time you get that feeling someone is probably watching you. Although we would like to think otherwise, serial killers roam the streets every day and are on the hunt for a new victim. It is incredibly hard to catch serial killers, and the majority of cases go unsolved. Intelligent serial killers like the Phantom Killer, the Zodiac Killer, and the Freeway Phantom were never caught.
The Phantom Killer was a brutal serial rapist and murderer, but his technique should not be considered anything less than brilliant. The way the Phantom Killer executed his victims shows how much thought he put into his crimes. Right before he attacked his victims, the killer blinded them with a bright light so

that they would be disoriented (Bavsun). He first attacked the male victims, thus eliminating the biggest threat, which allowed him to focus on his female target who he desired to kill the most. In addition, the Phantom Killer was also great at hiding his identity. He wore a white sack over his face so he couldn’t be described. The evolution of his attacks showed the true nature of intelligence as he fixed his methods after his failures. Even after viciously beating and assaulting his first two victims, both survived. With his next attacks, he shot both victims twice in the head to ensure that they would not live. Hidden in the Phantom Killer’s brutal attacks lies remarkable intelligence similar to the Zodiac Killer. The Zodiac Killer was an unknown but extremely clever serial killer who terrorized Northern California.
The Zodiac chose his victims and the locations of each murder carefully to ensure his identity remained hidden. He chose victims who were isolated so that nobody would hear screams or gunshots. The Zodiac Killer was also extremely cautious, and he left very little evidence. The only evidence found was a bloody fingerprint at the scene of the murder of a taxi driver. His fingerprints weren’t in any system, so unfortunately, he could not be located. The Zodiac killer taunted the police and terrorized the public with letters sent to the press in a cryptic code. In his first letter he stated: “I like killing people because it is so much fun it is more fun than killing wild game in the forest because man is the most dangerous animal to kill” (Shaw). Some parts of his letters still remain unsolved. He was narcissistic, and his letters could one day expose who he is. The Zodiac Killer was extremely narcissistic and held an overwhelmingly strong god complex, but both the Zodiac Killer and the Freeway Phantom shocked the nation with their astounding
intelligence. The Freeway Phantom showed his true intelligence with the ___ behind his kills. The victims he chose ensured that he would not be seen during the kidnapping. All of his victims were teens walking alone down dark, deserted roads. The dark stretch of road made sure that nobody would see the abduction. The Phantom Killer targeted black females between the ages 10 and 18. "You better bet that if these had been white girls, the police would have solved the cases," (Wilber). The intelligence of this killer shows as he knew the police wouldn’t concentrate on these cases as much because the victims were minorities. The Phantom Killer used his victims to mislead the police. Brenda Crockett, the third victim, was forced by her abductor to call her home and give false information as to where she located and who her abductor was. She told her mother’s boyfriend that a white man took her and was keeping her in a house, but several years later the police now think that she was forced to say this. Even though the police are catching up to the Freeway Phantom, he shouldn’t be considered anything less than fearfully intelligent. To remain hidden after mercilessly attacking numerous people, serial killers must be exceedingly clever. The Phantom Killer eliminated the biggest threat to his operation while still keeping his identity hidden, and over time, he evolved his technique to ensure his success. The Zodiac Killer taunted the police with cryptic letters while still remaining hidden by leaving no trace of his identity. The Freeway Phantom fed the police false information and chose victims who would be pursued less by the police. Ultimately, it takes a great deal of wit to outrun the police and simultaneously go down in history.
The motives and backgrounds of serial killers is a vexing topic. Not two people are the same, so therefore their motives differ. The different types of serial killers are: hedonistic, power seekers, gain, mission oriented, visionary, psychopathic, comfort, medical, organized, and disorganized. Motives of these murderers range from fear of being rejected, to “getting rid of what they deem bad,” or even to get sexual satisfaction from the suffering of their victims.
The Zodiac Killer is an unidentified man who is presumed to be a serial killer that operated in Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Murdering at least five people, but the Zodiac claims to have killed upwards of 37 people in total. In 1969 the Zodiac Killer began sending letters to the Bay Area newspapers, taking credit for the five killings and threatening further violence. The Zodiac Killer would call and send cryptic letters to the law enforcement agencies in Northern California, taunting them since they were unable to bring him to justice. The police had suspects but none that they could ever charge for the murders, due to lack of evidence, so this mystery still remains unsolved. The cultural impact that the Zodiac Killer has had on tv, movies and the media is still around today and has had many shows and movies remade after what this killer did. The cultural impact as well as for the families of the victims still remains today with still no closure, for those families who live in Northern California still there is the fear that crosses the minds on how such an awful criminal was once a part of their society, someone they may
Now this man killed allot of people so this paragraph isn’t for the faint of heart. The first victim will be Paul Lee Stein. He worked as a cab driver in the late 1960s 1968 to be exact. The zodiac hopped in the car of steins cab… A normal customer is all steins must have thought but boy was he wrong…. He asked to get taken across town. About a block before arrival he shot stein in the head with a 9mm. pistol. After he took his wallet keys and a piece of his shirt for proof. Now onto Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin the next victim on the list. She sat in her car with her boyfriend who survived the attack… he must have been devastated by the fact that he couldn’t help what is possibly the love of his life…. When the zodiacs car parked behind them. He got out and shot both multiple times with a 9mm. luger pistol. Later, Ferrin, had a medical professional pronounce her dead. The final victim will be Cecelia Ann Shepard. The zodiac pulled up his car by a couple having a picnic he then said he had just escaped from prison he held tied them up while holding a 45. He stabbed both of them but only Shepard died. As it can see he could be known as a very evil man and killed at weird times as the saying goes expect it when it’s least expect
In order to identify serial killers before they kill repeatedly, a person needs to study the characteristics that makes up this type of criminals. Most serial killers have been abandoned, by one or both parents, they are emotionally, physically, and even sexually abused by a family member, or relatives from unstable families who have criminal, psychiatric and alcoholic histories, or tend to have hate for their parents and people in general which makes them have antisocial personality disorder. They have conflicted pain or tortured animals at a young age and most are highly interested in gaining control over things. Even though not every serial killers posses these characteristics, but most share these characteristics the same way they share the psychological need to have complete control and power over people.
The Zodiac Killer is one of the most popular murders. The fact that made him so infamous was that The Zodiac Killer was never identified. The mysterious killer was never caught and jailed for his crimes. The FBI have looked for the killer for decades, but still, even to this day, could not find him. The whole mystery of the killer and the name of the killer has made him popular across the United States. The Zodiac Killer was a mysterious killer, and he had a very unique way of going about the murders.
A serial killer is traditional defined as the separate killings of three or more people by an individual over a certain period of time, usually with breaks between the murders. (Angela Pilson, p. 2, 2011) This definition has been accepted by both the police and academics and therefore provides a useful frame of reference (Kevin Haggerty, p.1, 2009). The paper will seek to provide the readers with an explanation of how serial killers came to be and how they are portrayed in the media.
But maybe he died, which could explain the end of his communication with California. In the end, he claimed to have killed at least 37 people. People thought Zodiac was unintelligent, but that perception was obviously wrong because he had training in the following areas: explosives, cryptography, astrology, chemistry and guns. He also knew how to prevent leaving fingerprints on crime scenes; he could have learned that from jail. He knew he was clever, and it made him happy to know that the police seemed to be running in circles.
The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer from the late 60’s and early 70’s. The zodiac killer identification was never known. The Zodiac Killer was most famous for killing couples in their car at night. He started his killing spree on October 30, 1966 in San Francisco with his first victim, eighteen-year-old Cheri Jo Bates. Cheri’s throat was cut so deep it almost decapitated her. On November 29, 1966, the Riverside police received a copy of an anonymous letter in the mail. This letter taunted the police about the murder of Cheri Jo Bates and how she will not be the last. (Wilbur R. Miller, 2012) This was his way of being in control and getting his voice heard. Just a few months later he kept to his promise that there will be more death. The Zodiac killer murdered a young couple, David Faraday and Betty Jensen, in Vallejo, California. David was killed by one shot to the head and Betty was shot five times ten feet away from the car. The police suspected Arthur Leigh Allen, a child molester, who fit the description of the Zodiac Killer almost to a T, but there was no incriminating evidence, so he was never charged. The Zodiac Killer was suspected of killing 2,500 people throughout his killing spree, and was never caught. The Zodiac Killer’s reason for killing was that once he killed his victims they would be his slaves in the afterlife. He thought of himself as a “God”, all powerful and all knowing. (Wilbur R.
Serial killers are typically known to fantasize as to how they intend to kill their victims. Additionally, they develop a well laid out plan as to how this will occur and in doing so leave little evidence at the scene for investigators to follow up with. Serial killers also tend to target persons that may not be missed for some time such as prostitutes or run-aways. As a result a long period of time will pass before the victim is ever found and an investigation is started. This becomes an ongoing challenge to
Serial killers have captivated the attention of scientists from the first signs of their existence to modern day. Interested by these killers’ inhumane actions, researchers set out to determine the cause of such graphic, horrific crimes. The brain has been brought into question regarding the motivation of these cold blooded killers. After extensive research, abnormalities of both the chemical composition and material makeup have been identified within the brains of numerous serial killers. These differences are more than mere coincidence, they are evidence that killers do not think in the same way. The killers’ drives and motives are irregular, just as their brains are. Not only are these variations interesting, but they are also crucial to the justice system in regards to the punishment of past, future, and present sequential murderers. It is important that as a society we learn the differences in the mind of a killer, and also recognize and understand them. A serial killer’s brain greatly differs in function from the average citizen’s brain due to physical variations in the brain and a different chemical makeup.
We can all agree that serial killers are unpredictable scary people but when it comes to why they kill, everyone has a different view. In my research paper I will get into the mind of a serial killer and try to figure out what exactly sets them into uncontrollable rage.
...nd most stunningly, the NSA deciphered cryptographs that contained his name; all pointing to him as the most likely, and the most probable culprit. The Zodiac was one of the most cold and calculating murderers of the twentieth century. His gruesome and violent ways of killing, along with the coinciding of his murders with moon phases, star appearances, radians, and the astrological chart, among other things, also make him the most terrifying murderer of the twentieth century. The scariest thing of all is that this maniac was never caught, and if not dead, is still living somewhere, potentially threatening the lives of the peaceful people around him.
The crime spree murders of the Zodiac killer is one of the greatest unsolved murdered cases of all time. The Zodiac’s murders took place from later 1960s, through to about 1972. Most of The Zodiac’s murders took place in Northern California. Some main areas where murders took place are Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa, and San Francisco, California. Two out of the four men that were attacked lived and three women out of the three were killed. The ages of the victims goes from 16 up to about 29 years of age. The Zodiac claimed he murdered 37 people in the letters he sent to the local newspaper.
The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. Since the beginning of time, scientists and neuropsychologists alike have studies its composition and how it influences human behavior. However, no human behavior has baffled researchers more than serial murder. Serial killers are dangerous animals that act upon bizarre influences that have fascinated the human race for thousands of years. Many wonder what could cause a person to take the life of another innocent soul. Do internal factors cause them to do it? Is it their environment? What causes a serial killer to kill?
Serial murder as defined by the FBI is, “[t]he unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s), in separate events" (Morton Robert J. Ed, & Hilts., Ed, 2005, p. 9). Numerous people disagree with the definition, this researcher included, since it lacks the cool- down period after they murder, which various people feel stands necessary for serial killer status. Serial killers remain a rare phenomenon. The FBI states, serial murder accounts for less than one percent of killings per year (Morton Robert J. Ed, & Hilts., Ed, 2005, p. 2). Nevertheless, throughout the years, countless people have researched serial killers since they commit such heinous crimes. Criminologists and researchers have been attempting to identify various
