Have you ever sat down on the couch after a long day, cuddled up in your comfy clothes, and turned on the TV to watch a true crime documentary? Many people enjoy learning about crimes or mysteries - it’s a human instinct to be fascinated by the unthinkable. However, creating media based on serial killers that do not fall into the category of factual documentaries, and instead seem to be for entertainment, is a different story. Shows and movies based on serial killers should never be made. This is because they often dramatize events, cause people on social media to romanticize horrible people, and are extremely damaging to those involved in the production. In her novel, Defending the Devil, she states that his crimes in their entirety were never confessed to until the days leading up to his execution. Although many prefer watching shows and movies based on serial killers instead of having to sit through documentaries, if these pieces of media are not entirely factual in the information that they provide, these shows and movies aren’t worth watching. Exaggerating or fabricating events in order to create a more entertaining show should not be accepted when it provides false information to those trying to educate themselves on the case. Not to mention, those on social media who take interest in these types of shows or movies often romanticize serial killers. Casting serial killers as conventionally attractive actors, such as Zac Efron or Evan Peters, has done more harm than good.
