I read The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule. I chose this novel because the story sounded very captivating. I also wanted to learn more about Ted Bundy and why serial killers are the way they are. This book does exactly that. The novel explores Ann Rule’s friendship with Ted Bundy when they met in 1971 while working for a Crisis Clinic in Seattle, Washington. It travels through the confusing journey of trying to figure out that this charismatic man had a murderous, scandalous double life. Ann Rule is quite an amazing author, and that is especially true for this book. Ann Rule was more than qualified to write this book. Rule not only knew Ted Bundy personally, but had so many credentials to be able to write true crime books in the first place. Her grandfather was a sheriff at a county jail, where she visited him often. Getting to know the inmates, and see her grandfather solve crimes, Rule was fascinated by crime, criminals, and all that came with it. She went to the University of Washington to study creative writing with a minor in psychology, criminology, and penology. She went on to get a job as a police officer but was let go due to nearsightedness so, Rule began to write freelance for the Seattle Times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Cosmopolitan, etc. She became a full-time writer a few years later. Her first true crime book was The Stranger Beside Me and was also her first bestseller. She has many awards from the books she has written, exhibiting how strong of a writer she is.
