In Melton A. McLaurin’s “Separate Pasts; Growing Up White in the Segregated South,” segregation is the obvious theme for the whole book. In the 1950s south, segregation was not uncommon and seen as normal. The 1950’s though, were on the verge of change. Change meaning the civil rights movement and the fight for the walls of segregation to be knocked down. However, McLaurin gives powerful insight to segregation in his hometown of Wade, North Carolina, where it “existed unchallenged and nearly unquestioned in the rural south” in the early 1950s. McLaurin portrays segregation as a normal way of life from a white viewpoint, which I believe he does effectively through memories of his childhood. In McLaurin’s hometown of Wade, North Carolina, segregation was obvious and everywhere in daily routines of life. Segregation was often meant to mean that blacks had separate facilities from whites, yet equal. However, this was often not the case. In fact, it was quite opposite. Many times, a public restroom for white was well kept, nice, and clean, whereas if it was for a black, it was dirty and rundown. A good example of the difference in facilities for whites and blacks were the elementary schools McLaurin described. The black elementary school was a one-story frame building, had no lunch program, no indoor plumbing, poor sports equipment, and hardly a playground. The white elementary school however, was a two-story brick building, “a large auditorium and stage, indoor plumbing and modern restrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and a large dining room in which hot lunches were served daily (23).” It is clear when the two schools are compared against one another, that there is a vast difference in facilities which are for blacks, and those that a... ... middle of paper ... ...much of the South at the time. I believe that McLaurin does an effective job describing segregation in his hometown by giving actual examples that he experienced growing up. He was there, he saw it, and he experienced it. Therefore, I believe that the book has much historical value. This book gives insight from a young boy’s point of view of growing up with segregation in the south. Usually, you hear the black’s point of view and how horrible it was, but it is interesting to hear it from the other side because as a young boy, he really didn’t see it as wrong, but that it was just the way they lived. Through McLaurin’s memories, the book gives not just a boring textbook read about segregation, but stories and experiences with it, making it an interesting and more enjoyable read. I believe that this book gives valuable historical insight to segregation in the south.
Making Whiteness: the culture of segregation in the south, 1890-1940 is the work of Grace Elizabeth Hale. In her work, she explains the culture of the time between 1890 and 1940. In her book she unravels how the creation of the ‘whiteness’ of white Southerners created the ‘blackness’ identity of southern African Americans. At first read it is difficult to comprehend her use of the term ‘whiteness’, but upon completion of reading her work, notes included, makes sense. Up to about 40 years after the civil war blacks and whites lived among one another without segregation, just like they did during slavery I might add, but this time they were free, had access to property, shopped where whites shopped, lived side by side. I say again in this review, location, location, location. The north had slaves, the south had slaves, and the north had segregation. This book reminds us as we romanticize the north, it also has a past. I recommend this book to any teacher or person wanting to know the real history of segregation between blacks and whites in America and to remember that history repeats itself.
In the book, Separate Pasts, the author provides a plethora of different memories from his earlier days. In the book, he gives his views on segregation and what it was like to grow up inside the small town of Wade, North Carolina. Melton McLaurin, faced a whole barrage of emotions during this time. He goes into detail about all of the challenges that he faced socially and internally. He wrote about each important individual that helped him to become the man he was.
I want to start off this analysis essay of the book, “Separate Pasts,” by author MeltonMcLaurin, That it was really well written account of a world that for me, a 21st century youngwomen from a more open community, is completely foreign, and honestly disconnected. Thevery human connection between the reality of the segregated south and the author did allot forme to come to a better grasp of how racism in the south persisted. The fact that he lived in the eraand gave us the theme of change vs tradition throughout the book, gives me an insight of boththe past and present. The author Melton McLaurin reflects on his pasts by recalling his memoriesof growing up in Wade, North Carolina his hometown. During the time, McLaurin is in thesegregated south working in his grandfather’s store; there he starts to observe how he interactsbetween white community and black community, and how each ones’ lifestyles are worlds apart,even though they live in the same town. In the book, McLaurin also describes the influentialblack people in the community of Wade, North Carolina that influenced his views of racism andsegregation. He is teaching us more about the southern history because he actually lived it, thenmost historians that give facts then what people actually thought and felt in that time. McLaurintakes the reader through his thoughts and emotional journey of his unwilling acceptance ofsegregation.To me the overall theme to the book was change vs tradition. As you can see during hisyounger years McLaurin did not understand how much his skin color played a part of hiseveryday life. Separate Pasts: Growing Up White in the Segregated South is an award-winning novel written by Melton A. McLaurin that delves into the 1950s era where racism was evident around each corner. McLaurin honestly explores the relationships he had with his fellow white peers as well as the African Americans during his childhood in the southern United States. Throughout the book, McLaurin discussed how segregated the tiny town of Wade was and how the blacks would never be deemed equal to the whites, regardless of their hard work or honesty. I believe that McLaurin adequately proves that Wade was a town divided entirely upon the thoughts of racism and segregation, and how those thoughts affected the people of that time, and how McLurin came to see around those ideas.

Woodward put it best when he stated, “The policies of proscription, segregation, and disfranchisement that are often described as the immutable ‘folkways’ of the South, impervious alike to legislative reform and armed intervention, are of a more recent origin.” (65) He wanted to show how the roots of the system were not integrated with slavery. Jim Crow laws and slavery were both horrible institutions, but they existed as two seperate entities. Woodward does not claim the South to be picturesque, because the Jim Crow laws were not established in the region. The South established Jim Crow laws and made them worse than found in the North. Woodward’s goal was not to protect the South’s legacy, but to give a clearer picture of the facts regarding the Jim Crow laws.
In Black Boy blacks were treated as less than humans. The whites wanted to be superior in every way and they forced the blacks to follow their rules. In one of the jobs that he had, Wright witnesses how awful his boss treated a customer because she did not pay. “They got out and half dragged and half kicked the woman into the store…later the woman stumbled out, bleeding, crying, holding her stomach her clothing torn.” (Wright, 179) Whites treating blacks like this was normal. When the woman was being mistreated there were whites around, but they did not even look at them because they did not care. There was also a policeman who arrested the woman after she was assaulted Wright was mistreated in many ways because he was black and did not know how to give in to the rules. Because of the way society treated him, Wright became angry and with that anger grew a motivation to become better. He wanted to change the destiny that the whites had set for all blacks. In Separate Pasts McLaurin grew up in the South with blacks around him since he was a child. While there was still segregation in his city, blacks and whites still lived together better than with Wright. The book talks about how there was segregation just about everywhere you looked. In the 1930's the white people had their own restrooms along with their own water fountains and the lacks had their own school and blacks usually did not go to school. They were too busy working on the farm to go to school. The schools only had one room for all of the grades. The children usually walked to school in those days,because they didn't have school buses. They also had to bring their own lunch to school in lunch pails. Today children ride school buses to school. It would kill us if we had to walk to school.We are not use to that much exercise. Also today they serve us lunch in the cafeterias. Although it it is not that good at least they try. They have to work with the limited stuff the school board allows them to buy. Speaking of buses, the blacks would have to sit in the back of the bus and the whites sat in the front. Although,thanks to Rosa Parks, who on day refused to sit in the back of the bus, now blacks can sit wherever they want to sit. Today whites use the same restrooms and water fountains as blacks do. Blacks and whites also attend the same schools. Today schools have different classrooms for every grade.
Segregation is the act of setting someone apart from other people mainly between the different racial groups without there being a good reason. The African American’s had different privileges than the white people had. They had to do many of their daily activities separated from the white people. In A Lesson Before Dying there were many examples of segregation including that the African American’s had a different courthouse, jail, church, movie theater, Catholic and public school, department stores, bank, dentist, and doctor than the white people. The African American’s stayed downtown and the white people remained uptown. The white people also had nicer and newer building and attractions than the African American’s did. They had newer books and learning tools compared to the African American’s that had books that were falling apart and missing pages and limited amount of supplies for their students. The African American’s were treated as if they were lesser than the white people and they had to hold doors and let them go ahead of them to show that they knew that they were not equal to them and did not have the same rights or privileges as they did just because of their race. In A Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass segregation is shown through both slavery and the free African American’s during this time. African-Americans endured poor academic conditions throughout the entire United States, not just in the south. In Prince Edward County, Virginia, the segregated school had no nurse, lockers, gym or cafeteria. In Clarendon County, South Carolina, buses were not available to the African-American school, but were available to the white schools. In Wilmington, Delaware, no extra curricular activities or buses were offered to the African-American school. In Washington DC, the situation in segregated schools was the same as in the other states, but the textbooks were outdated. (Good, 21-34)
