What is Senioritis? What causes Senioritis? Senioritis is a problem that affects most seniors after they have applied and been accepted to college. It not only affects the average senior, but the top of the class seniors as well. In the article Fighting senioritis By Eric Hoover, he states: “In a study entitled “The Lost Opportunity of Senior Year: Finding a Better Way," released in 2001, the commission found that for many students, that year "becomes party-time rather than a time to prepare for one of their most important life transitions. ... Many students reported 'ditching ' senior classes because the atmosphere encouraged them to consider senior year a farewell tour of adolescence and school." The commission also suggested that senioritis may, in fact, be most pervasive among the "best and the …show more content…
But other would rather die than go to a different country. Whatever it may be, learning is the most important thing. Senioritis is a real problem, it affects many people in many different ways and sometimes they don’t even know that they have senioritis. Senioritis is a real thing and can affect anyone. Senioritis does not only affect the person, but it also affects the quality of a person’s school work and the person 's ability stay on task. Most of all it affects the student 's grades. “In preparing for your arrival on campus and the rigors of a Smith education, please consider taking steps to regain your academic momentum . by creating a reading list within your particular academic area this summer; by availing yourself of summer classes or tutoring opportunities; or by investigating the academic support services at Smith when you arrive.” (Hoover 2003, smith college) Seniors, the last half of the year is hard, almost graduated, almost free from hours and hours of homework, but, don’t give up on your goals. Keep doing what you do best finish out strong. And fight for what you want and keep
Graduating early is when you graduate before you are suppose to. It was never common because no one ever seemed to think about it or want to put in the work to do it. For a long time high school was defined as the best time of your life. Everyone who spoke to you always said when you left you would miss it. No one really wanted to graduate early for that reason. People wanted to cherish the time they had in high school because they knew they only got to go through it once. It was a big idea to live up to. Senior year has this belief attached to it. It means a lot to people because it is their last year of high school and it was upsetting to know that you’d be leaving the people you have spent the last four years with. People thought you had to have as much fun as possible in high school and do all kinds of crazy things before you turned 18: when you would be considered and punished as an adult. Now those times have changed. High school is not looked upon as the best times of your life anymore. It is looked upon in almost a negative way. High school has changed a lot and it is not very enjoyable now. There are lots of reasons why someone would want to graduate early. For instance, maybe the student was bullied, maybe the student decided they wanted to move on and go to college, maybe the student got sick of their home life and wanted to move forward, or like me, maybe the student has their future waiting for them and all they need is to graduate high school so they could begin it.
Walter Kirn successfully unearths some of the worst aspects of senior year. However, these reasonings are not sound enough to condone the discontinuation of it. Any issues found are the fault of the student or the school administration, not the grade level itself. Senior year is worth holding on to for both the persistence of learning and for solidifying relationships. Kirn mentions with pleasure his choice to leave high school early. Nonetheless the four year high school experience should not be demoralized by those who wish to value it for the irreplaceable opportunity it is.
The older person that I interviewed was my great-grandfather, Kay Wilson. He is eighty-three years old and is currently retired, living at home. Wilson was born on February 27, 1934 and raised in Sylacauga, AL by his mother. His father was not active in his life, but his grandparents were his main caretakers growing up.
Senioritis is in fact real and slowly making life harder for the high school seniors. As a senior in high school, I know first hand the consequences on having senioritis. I have been through senioritis for a moment as I would be tardy for my first hour almost constantly.
Older adults are a very knowledgeable population and have had a lot of life experiences. As people age, things start to change physically, mentally, and socially. According to DeBrew, author of “Can being ageist harm your older adult patients?” stereotypes and discrimination are evident in various aspects of patient care. “Ageism [is] defined as stereotyping or discrimination aimed at older adults and a lack of knowledge about normal changes of aging and presentation of illness in older adults (. . .)” (DeBrew, 2015). DeBrew (2015) states, “research findings suggest that ageism is common in healthcare” (DeBrew, 2015). Ageism is not only an issue in the healthcare setting, but also among older adults as well as their families. When ageism is present in the healthcare setting it poses
When I first received the news that I was placed into an honors math class, I was frightened. I questioned my intelligence and my sense of self-worth. The first few weeks I often asked myself, “do I belong here.” However another part of me felt honored and motivated to prove that my teachers were correct in placing me into an honors course. Eventually my dedication and work ethic lead me to be placed in multiple honors and AP classes later in my academic career.
When you consider ageism, you think about people being labeled as other 's sees fit. It 's just another term to judge or deny people of their humanity. When you think about people in their late adulthood what comes to mind? Some may think about gray hair, saggy skin, dentures, and a wheelchair. So my question is why? According to (Palmore, 2005, p. 90) “Ageism is a social disease, much like racism and sexism” in that it considers people as part of a category and not as individuals, creating “needless fear, waste, illness, and misery.” The more people grow and develop, they will learn that aging must go on.
“Junior year is the most stressful year of high school” I hear all the seniors and graduates say to me. Although it is already frustrating enough, junior year becomes ten times harder when I decided to be a part of Student Senate. This year, Student Senate is very different, and it has become more difficult and extremely demanding compared to last year. As my third year of being a senator, this year has left a negative impact on my views of Student Senate. The people are inexperienced, bossy, and apathetic.
As you finish up your sophomore year and begin your journey through junior and senior year there will be many decisions that you will have to make. Also on your journey through your junior and senior year you will have to be more responsible, gain more power, have more freedom, and see your true potential. As you become more responsible, gain more power, have more freedom, and see your true potential you should consider this quote “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; Watch your words; they become your actions; Watch your actions; they become your habits; W...
