During the ongoing course of my senior design project I have been able actively implement and incorporate the design strategies and approaches I learned in my Design Project class (BME 437) I have attended last year’s fall. The skills I have gained throughout the class include: Product Development Process, Product Design, Literature Searches, Project Planning and Scheduling, Food and Drug Administration Design Controls, Engineering Ethics and Technical Presenting.
My team and I are designing an Actuated Finger Exoskeleton with Myo-Control, which is a system that assist post stroke patients regaining their fingers range of motion using muscle control throughout their rehabilitation process. The teams consist of two advisers and three students: Brent Ulrey, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering; Patrick Carley, Clinical Adviser at American International College; Dakota Ferguson, Biomedical Engineering Senior; Paris Mathis, Computer Engineering Senior and myself.
The majority of stroke survivors are left with an inadequately functioning hemiparetic hand, which is a condition of paralysis affecting one side of the body. Rehabilitation robotics has shown promising potential in providing patients with intensive therapy leading to functional gains. The proposed device consists of the Myo-interface in conjunction with an exoskeleton finger. The Myo-interface system is comprised of the Myo armband, Bluetooth dongle, Bluetooth shield, Arduino board and virtual reality video game built on Unreal Engine. By combining

Therefore, my task was developing the previously mentioned Myo-interface algorithm that controls an actuated finger exoskeleton utilizing surface electromyography from forearm muscles during dynamic free movements of single fingers, as well as building the interactive video
There is a newly wedded couple who has decided it is time for them to move out their small apartment and buy their own home. They go house hunting, and after seeing two homes they find this house that they feel is the home of their dreams yet it lacks some of the extra luxury things they feel is needed. They decide to purchase the house. They move in two months later and go straight to work. They knock out walls, change the flooring, add a pool, new appliances, remodel the bathroom, new central air and heat system, everything to fit their desired needs. After months of renovation the house is finally complete. They throw a house warming party to celebrate. Life is great for the couple.
The subject’s forearm was prepared by cleaning the surface of their skin (the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle) and the bony prominence of their wrist with an alcohol swab, and the EMG adhesive electrodes where placed on the belly of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. The positive electrode was placed more proximal to the elbow, while the negative electrode was placed more mid-distally. The grounding (noise reducing) electrode was places on the bony prominence of the wrist, and the force transducer was setup to achieve a stable baseline. The subject was then instructed to the support their forearm over the edge of the table or on their leg with the wrist in a semi-flexed position, and when ready squeeze the force grip transducer as hard as possible. For the first/”fast” time interval of the experiment, the subject made ten squeezes as fast as possible with one second per squeeze intervals, and the force onset, EMG onset, difference between force onset and EMG onset, peak EMG amplitude, and peak force amplitude were observed and recorded. The experiment was then repeated for a medium, three seconds per squeeze, and slow, five seconds per squeeze time intervals with the same variables observed and
Organisms are limited by the structure of their bodies. Some creatures are capable to do great things because of the number of limbs they have, or the density of their skin. Humans in particular are extremely reliant in the capabilities that our bodies bring to us. Our bodies however, are not all dependable, as we can injure ourselves, and even lose parts of our body. To combat this loss of body, the great minds of our species have created false limbs to replace what we have lost. This great improvement to our lives is known as, the prosthetic. In recent years this technology has expanded into a new form, that combines prosthetics and robotics to make life for people

...ter screen an arm that was placed onto his stump. When Ture Johanson saw his arm on the computer screen, he was able to control his own movements using his own neural command. In this particular study, Johanson was asked to perform numerous movements with his phantom hands such as driving a racecar. By driving a racecar, Catalan found that the subject moved muscles at the end of his existing arm to show the intent of moving his missing hand. From this study, subjects who had been experiencing PLP for several years had longer periods without pain and had shorter periods of intense pain. In addition, the phantom hand was relaxed from a tight fist to a half-open position. This study is different from others because the control signals are retrieved from the arm stump, and thus the affected arm is in charge. Moreover, it uses the signals from the damaged limbs itself.
“They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it-seems that only the children weep.” (Lee-285) Ideas have not been engraved in children’s heads which allows them to see the world as a bright, confusing place. I chose Scout as the character for my memory box because she tells “To kill A Mockingbird” with a sweet child’s view. She does not understand why there are prejudices and why some people are treated different than others. School, Atticus, and the courtroom taught Scout many lessons that she will never forget. The memory box itself is Mrs.Dubose’s candy box that she had given to Jem. For readers to see the book in an innocent, childish way during the 1930’s must have changed the way many people felt about how the country treated African Americans. Harper Lee made a very wise decision to tell this amazing story through the eyes of a child.
As a species, humanity, henceforth, people, will never go out of business, but as individuals and specified groups, people can and will fail, because people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan. In the modern society, it has become mandatory that all high school seniors are required to complete and present a “Senior Project,” to show the world that they can be taken seriously. Covering these points will include: what the project is, examples of different advocators of the project, and the different viewpoints of why it is useful verses why it is not.
When I was planning my senior project I knew I wanted to make something I could keep and use for myself but I wasn’t quite sure who would be my mentor. Then I thought it would be special to do something like this with my grandpa who is now 84 years old and has 40+ years of experience with construction. He even built his home that he and my grandmother are living in today, in 1954. My grandpa started making canes for himself, to donate and just for fun and I thought it will be cool to make myself a cane and customize it with designs. Before starting my project, I had no previous knowledge of working with wood or heavy machinery. The only time I worked with wood was hammering a nail into a wooden wall. Now after I have completed my project, I know how to stain and varnish wood, use a table saw, stationary sander, wood burner and a drill press machine.
The necessary use of one’s hands during extravehicular activity makes the spacesuit’s gloves a critical component.
IDEO’s approach to the product design process is through a collective group effort that encourages suggestions, multiple prototypes, and...
The business model for IDEO began as an open-minded place to design, develop and manufacture new products. The last 20 years of proven product design driven by innovation has translated into profit margins for their clients and continuous refinement for IDEO’s process. IDEO pioneered “concurrent engineering” where design and engineering work together to produce aesthetically pleasing products that are also highly functional. This was different from many other similar companies that placed more emphasis on the industrial design than the engineering. IDEO’s strengths grew out of the ability to master this ability with high tech clients. Corporations came to IDEO because they had a proven system of developing the best products through using their key ingredients for innovative strategy.
