Senior Class President Research Paper

During high school, you either become a member of a club or an athlete. In my case, I decided to be part of Student Council so I could be more involved in school activities. All of the student council members were required to run for a leadership position, from president to class representative. When senior year came, I knew I wanted to run for a competitive and very important position. And that’s exactly what happened, I decided to run for senior class president, but I never expected such an outcome.
The day came when we had to announce the position we were running for. I went up to the teacher's desk, and wrote my name under the senior class president list. When I found out my opponents, I started to wonder if I was really up to the challenge.

I say this because I was going against the girl every guy had a crush on, Daniela Rodriguez. And against the boy that was more involved with school activities than me, Kyle Nowak. The most popular kids were all going against each other. It felt like this was a fight to see and prove who was more popular. This was going to be harder than I thought, we all had the same chance to win. We only had four days to prepare our speech. We were giving a short time to prepare because our student council advisor said not to make a big deal out of it. The four days I had to prepare myself were the most nerve wracking of my senior year. Deep inside I really wanted to be senior class president, but the decision was up to my classmates.
The day finally came, it was time for me to stand in front of six different classes and give my speech. As I walked towards the classroom, I saw my friend and she immediately asked me, “are you ready to win?” I answered, “You know I am.” But was I really ready to win? I mean I was going against other popular kids, I did not know what to expect. The closer I got to the classroom, the more intense and scary everything felt. As I walked into the classroom, all I wondered was, “what did I get myself into, I should've ran for a different position.” As soon as we were all ready the teacher told us the order we would do our speech; it was first Daniela, then kyle, and lastly me. Daniela sing her speech as a rapper and it went something like this, “my name is daniela, and you should vote for me because I am the realest and coolest girl you know…” I do not really remember everything she said, but she was up there for 2 minutes singing. Then came kyle’s turn, he seemed so confident as if he knew he was going to win for sure. He went on and on how he would do so many changes that would make senior year more fun and easier. Also, he made sure he mentioned all the positions he had been part of, like being president of honor society and so on. At the end he gave out cupcakes, good thing I also had something to give out to everyone.
Finally it was my turn to give my speech, I felt so nervous.

I wouldn't have been so nervous if I hadn't had such strong and well known opponents. I introduced myself and began to mention the reasons why my classmates should vote for me, “ Hello, many of you know me, but if you don't my name is Elendia Guerrero, and I want to be your senior class president.” Everyone was paying so much attention it felt like they were watching me perform. I mentioned some of the reasons why they should vote for me, “for me your opinions will always matter. I will always ask you guys for your opinion on any activity, and on designs for our senior shirt…” I talked for two minutes because that was the maximum time we were allowed for some reason. At the end of my presentation, I gave out candy to everyone. After this, the three of us had to repeat our speech to five more classes. By the time it was lunch, I was tired of repeating my speech I already knew it by memory and did not need my

flashcards.
After giving my speech to the last class, I felt as light as a feather.

I was finally done speaking in front of so many very attentive people. But the time of truth was still waiting ahead. For a while, I felt like I had a really high chance of winning because so many people told me they voted for me. I had to wait four hours to find out the results, those four hours were stressful so many things were going through my mind. One minute I was sure I was going to win, but the next minute I felt like I only got five votes. To get my mind off the whole running for president thing, I went to lunch with my friend. “Do you think you won?” my friend asked, and I responded, “honestly I do not know. I want to believe I did, but I don't

know.”
Four hours and three minutes later, I went into the student council facebook page and checked who won. I could barely look at my screen, I was scared to open the page and not see my name listed as the winner. But I took a big breath and opened the page, I couldn't believe what the post said it was so shocking to read it. The facebook post said, “Congratulations to your 2014-2015 senior class president Daniela Rodriguez.” I sat quietly staring at my phone screen, I couldn't believe I didn't win. I was so disappointed and sad. For a minute I thought I really had a chance of winning, but I did not win.
After all, I accepted the fact that I did not get the chance to be the senior class president. I learned from this experience that we can't always get what we want, no matter how hard we work for it. At the end, I was kind of glad I did not win senior class president because Daniela had such a hard time getting things done and agreeing with all of the students.
