My selected area of interest for my senior capstone experience is lab-based research because I wanted to try something new. During my junior year, I had the honor and opportunity to work with Summerour Middle School’s Technology Team which showed me how computer programming could applicable in a certain profession. I learned several specialized programs that were a part of my mentor’s daily work routine and the importance of creating relationships with one another at the work site. Although I was able to take away several different skills and tips, the most important one that I realized was that I wanted try something else for my SCE. I had completed my JFE during the first semester of my junior year, so I was able to contemplate on what I …show more content…
wanted to do for my SCE during second semester. I had also been taking AP Chemistry with Mr.
Wellnitz during junior year, and this course had a major influence on my selected area of interest. During my high school years at GSMST, I had the chance to work in a lab every single year. I learned the fundamentals on lab safety and equipment in freshman year chemistry. Little by little, I was learning how to use the lab equipment and when to use what type of lab equipment for different lab experiments and scenarios. I was able to spend most of my time in the lab during my AP Chemistry class. At least every two weeks, we had a lab were we could be very hands on and actively learning how chemistry can be applied through experiments. I would always be prepared and ready to collect data and collaborate with my fellow lab partners. For certain types of labs, we were able to design our own experiments so that we could have a chance to think on how acquire certain lab results. I soon began to realize the passion and enjoyment I felt working in a lab when I thought about my science fair project. My science fair group members and I worked long hard hours collecting data all night so that we could prove a simple engineering concept. There were times where we wanted to give up, but the feeling of accomplishment and completion trumped all of that. The thought of success and completing a project in a lab had major influence to my decision in the selected area of …show more content…
interest. Two CARP components that I believe are my current greatest strengths in this area of interest are inquiring and principled.
I exemplify these CARP components in several different ways in my life. I always seek to know more and learn more by asking teachers many questions when I do not understand something, and I like to look things up right away when I do not know the answer to something. I can apply these problem solving like characteristics to my selected area of interest by asking my future mentor everything and anything when I am confused about the task at hand. The second component that I mentioned was being principled. I know where I come from and why I do certain task in life, so it motivates me to preserve through any hardships that I encounter during controversial debates and certain tasks. I like to defend what I stand for and believe in, and I truly believe that my principled component drives me to be a better inquirer. When I work with my veteran research mentor in my selected area of interest, I want to be able to defend my beliefs before I am proven wrong by mentor over a certain concept we might be researching. These components will help learn as much as I possibly can from my SCE and
mentor. Two CARP elements in which I need the most focus and growth and set goals for the development of these elements in my SCE are to be mindful and open-minded. Because of my principled and narrow minded nature, I am occasionally blinded my own strong will and opinions that I do not take into consideration other’s ideas and opinions. Through my SCE, I believe that collaborative work with my mentor and possible partners will allow me to become more mindful of different perspectives and ideas on certain topics that we will discuss and research. By having an open mind, I will be able to take away more from the experience than what I had intend for in the beginning. I will become more knowledgeable in my current field of interest by following the guidance of my mentor. The idea of collaborating with others and being prepared to take in several new skills will be crucial for my development in these two CARP elements.

As student nurses, I have many goals that would like to achieve upon completion of 150 hours of my capstone course. My plan is to use this opportunity to demonstrate competency skills, and knowledge gained through previous quarters. I have listed seven learning goals that I wanted to achieve during the capstone experience. On my first day of capstone, I have gone over each one with my preceptor and requested from her to provide me with feedbacks, so I can use them as stepping tool to work upon. These goals ranged from critical thinking decision making, culture, growth & development, legal and ethical to clinical competence safety/holistic care, evidence-based practice, and professionalism lifelong learning.
...things I like the most about my degree program is that it is not all about academic studies even though it is heavily science-oriented. In that regard, my classes do emphasize atomic physics and chemistry, but they also offer substantial opportunity for practical experience. In the words of Professor Hejny, "It's not just classes; clinicals, homework, and practical experience make this a full-time program."
My Senior year in High School has officially begun, only one more year at Corona High. I know that Senior year is supposed to be fun, but I believe every year is an opportunity to improve. I have already set my goals for this school year. I believe I can achieve a GPA of 4.0 or above. However, there are some personal goals that I need to complete first. I need to stop my terrible habit of procrastinating. Another goal of mine is to pass my AP tests so I can earn college credit. I also want to learn new things, so I started to learn the basics of Coding, now I need to finish this course. These are some things I look to accomplish this year.
Over 30,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer in the US per year. Oral cancer is a cancer that is more common in people over the age of 45, but can occur at any age. Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth. “... Oral cancer- it is cancer that occurs in any part of the mouth; on the tongue’s surface, in the lips, inside the cheek, in the gums, in the roof and floor of the mouth, in the tonsils, and also the salivary glands”.(Salomon and Esposito; Dental Partners) Oral cancer, although devastating and destructive can be detected, prevented, treated and cured if it is found early on in its stages. Cancer is detected by dentist because there is a genetic mutation in the cell usually causing tumors within the initial area of effect. Oral cancer can be prevented, diagnosed and treated.

College is a wonderful experience that only a few get to expose to. Any four year university offers a great opportunity for anyone; either for the diverse rich culture college campuses offer, or the hundreds of organizations and the thousands of connections that can offer one person. In the real world today a college degree is almost “required” for any career or a good stable job. Few necessities in America are cheap or free. For example: water, health insurance, and welfare are just to name a few. Public education is on this list of free necessities in America. Coming from a person who went through the public education system for 14 years, I loved my experience and did not take it for granted. My school district wasn’t the best, but it sure wasn’t the worst. I enjoyed my time in public education and I made lifelong friends that I will never forget. My experience on the collegiate level so far has been amazing as I am on the path of accomplishing my goal to my dream career. Unfortunately, not everyone can say the same statement. A lot of people
In Applied Science I have found biology a really engaging aspect of the course. The particular topic, which has sparked my interest, was learning about neurotransmitters and the brain. This has built upon my knowledge of how varied levels of neurotransmitters can cause different diseases and how they can be treated, for example, low levels of serotonin is associated with depression.
My Capstone Proposal Project will be about sleep disturbances associated with cardiac surgery patients. One of the major complaints from the cardiac surgery population is the inability to sleep at night. My proposed strategy consists of the idea that by increasing nursing education and intervention there will be a reduction in sleep disturbances for the cardiac surgery population.
Over the years, I have developed an innovative approach to teaching and conducting research with undergraduates through creating and presenting course materials in both laboratory and classroom settings. In my experience, the best teaching involves concrete, hands-on examples, so I engage students in my courses by encouraging the maximum laboratory participation possible.
As a new 9th grade student at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, I think that I should be a freshman student ambassador because I know what it is like to come to a new school and not know the first thing about high school. As an ambassador, I would be sure to point out where to go and how to get there. Also, I would try to help them understand what each teacher expects of students and some helpful and easy suggestions on how stay on task and on schedule. Lastly, what I found comforting when I shadowed here at St. Joseph’s, was how accepting and friendly the person I shadowed was. She made me realize that St. Joe’s was not a scary place, but a place where I could be comfortable and hopefully have a second home. Even though there are many ups and
High School has helped me to refine this passion to the field of biological sciences with my particular interest being molecular genetics. My peers called my "crazy" for undertaking all three science subjects in my HSC course, but for me there really was no other choice. I have excelled in biology with a trial exam mark of 97%. Within the component of advanced molecular genetics of this course my mark of 100% reflects the love and passion I feel towards this subject, and I am extremely proud to be ranked number one in a very competitive class of sixteen. While biology has been my favourite subject I have also excelled in Physics and Chemistry ranking first and second in these su...
These are the most three important attributes to have in my opinion when approaching problems. I hope now with a better understanding of them and how to use them we can all become better listeners and never deny the ability that someone might surprise you and always be open-minded when we approach a problem. It is always important to realize that not everything is only surface deep and to really understand we have to dig below the surface in any situation.
...Some of the concepts we have had to learn include drawing the different elements in a bohr rutherford diagram, balancing chemical equations, types of chemical reactions, and the different types of acids and bases. Overall there were many other things in the unit that were very eye-opening as well, but these four definately helped me as a student have that ‘ah-ha’ moment, and they have definitely helped me learn about chemistry in a more in-depth way, appreciate chemistry and the science behind it a lot more, as well as teaching me something very new things such as how to neutralize Hydrochloric Acid inside of your stomach when it starts to pain. Learning these concepts in the classroom has really opened my eyes to the world in which we live in today, and now personally I will forever hold these memories and knowledge in my mind for when I really need it in my life.
Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
