Semester Reflection This past semester has been a journey with many ups and downs, but as I look back, I realize that I have met many of the goals I set for myself. Some of the goals I set at the beginning of the semester were to lengthen my achilles, show more emotion when dancing, and create my own unique style. Now that I am reaching the end of the semester, I feel accomplished because I know I have worked to my best abilities. I also feel that I have met many of the goals I have set and in doing so, have become a better dancer and performer. I know I met my goals based on the comments I received from my teachers and peers. Two of my teachers noticed that my jumps were getting better because I was landing my heels when I did a plie. This
I realized that I was capable of conquering obstacles and working with them so I could smooth out the road for my future. With my new studying habits, and my ambition and passion to learn, I will be able to pursue my journey through hard work and determination. I now feel capable of overcoming any challenge I may face in college because of the difficulties I have already conquered. My life now moves in a way that I can keep up with and still absorb the knowledge, positivity, and other life changing experiences that I come across. Fast forwarding to the summer of 2016, I took part in a two week dance program at New York University. At that point in my dance career, I had improved so much and dance had become my life.
Although I am not a great dancer by any means, I learned through my years of involvement in dance that if you want something you should not let any hardships stop you. This message is what helps push me toward success in my educational
Freshman fifteen is the NEW EPIDEMIC!!.. or not? In the eyes of freshman, college can be seen as entering the lion’s den when transitioning from high school. Students routines, diets, and moods drastically change resulting in an imbalance of one’s well being. As a way to cope college freshman typically look towards food for a release. Therefore, this is where the term freshman fifteen was born. Freshman fifteen is the idea that in one’s first year of attending college, the student will gain fifteen pounds. On average students are gaining weight at an abnormal pace however, it is not exactly the amount that the media has portrayed.
...fe and succeeding that I broke the chain in deciding to be different in standing out from my family. Even though, on my graduation day I should have been more exciting now I can see why it was the most important day of my life because on that day I should have said YES!! Made it this far. Graduating high school was my minor goal and was accomplished. The fact that my minor goal was accomplished made me realize that anything is possible. That day when I realized what graduation should have meant to me made me a better and setting high standards for myself.
Concluding this fall semester in Ballet II, I believe that I have gained huge improvements. As stated in my midterm self-evaluation, I wanted to spend my time in ballet to focus on areas of performance quality. I set four goals for myself to work on as well that included: stronger lower abdominal core, the use of my port te bras, releasing tension in my hands, and increasing the articulation of my feet. In addition to these certain goals, my hip injury has been a main focus throughout this entire semester.
So far this year, I felt pretty satisfied with my progress this semester. I feel like I am slowly adapting to the new way papers and assignments are handled. All my college work depends solely on me now. No one is going to baby me anymore and whether I succeed or fail depends on how much effort I put into something. For the first time in my life I wrote a paper. Not just a five paragraph essay but actual pages, which is extremely challenging. It’s also been my first time studying for five hours straight so I can pass an actual test. I didn’t know I possessed this level of dedication, it’s probably because it isn’t free.
I absolutely loved making a video of my group and me dancing. I thought this choreography project was an ideal group project for our class to take on. Not only did I learn about a couple of things about my classmates, and myself I also learned about dance in general. Below, I am going to talk about what was our inspiration, what I thought was difficult, what I enjoyed about re-making our dance, and the process of making the piece.
High school is quickly coming to a close. Despite the outstanding foundation with which it has provided me, I am truly excited to experience the culmination of my last four years. I have reached a point where my challenge exists not in my coursework, but rather in motivating myself to continue pushing myself to the very end. As an educational marathon runner, I desire to finish strong so that my finish line photograph will look presentable and athleticism respected. In order to accomplish this goal, I will internalize the Latin phrase “carpe diem,” meaning seize the day, thereby encouraging myself to conclude this phase of my educational experience with vigor while maintaining a positive attitude and inspiring peers to finish their own high school race with dignity.
For the past 13 years of our education we have been on a journey - a journey full of experiences, challenges and accomplishments. We have made it through elementary, middle and high school. It hasn't always been what we expected and certainly not easy, but as we progressed down the road, we stretched ourselves to reach across barriers and found ourselves in new and expanding roles. We were given the opportunity to explore our interests and discover what really excites us. We have become more independent and complete individuals. Our growth and self-discovery has placed us here tonight.
Senior year is a buzz of new media gossip, with most about the amazing hopes and joys about what college life is going to be like. Sadly most don’t have a clue about what they are being signed up for once those caps are thrown in the air. Every year student enters college with dangerous preconceptions of college and hailed with various struggles many crumble too. Various stresses accompanied by new found responsibility are thrown to the newly independent student who unable to handle begin to falter in grades and health.
I am really looking forward to this semester. Having taken almost a year off from ballet class, I find myself feeling refreshed and eager to jump right in and go back to the roots in which started my passion for dance. When I learned that the focus for this semester was fitness, I was thrilled. Fitness, already, is such a crucial part of my life and I am looking forward to expanding my repertoire of exercises and seeing how that translates to my dancing.
For my senior talk, I would want to go into how out of place I felt when I came to Georgetown freshman year. Coming from a public school in Iowa, I felt like I wasn’t smart enough to even compare myself with students coming from preparatory schools on the East Coast. Moreover, I felt like they belonged to an exclusive network of private schools, and thus all knew each other even before NSO. I withdrew; I was scared of putting myself out there, of taking risks and stepping outside my comfort zone. I indulged in unhealthy habits, like clinging to my friends from home and long-distance high school boyfriend. But my closest friend of all freshman year was my eating disorder. Instead of joining clubs, I went to the gym twice a day. Instead of going out with people, I sat in my room and cried over how fat I was, despite being underweight. And like a typical Georgetown student
In the school I have learned a lot of different things I didn´t knew and start realizing I would have to prepare more and start working the faster and harder I can. As I started studying, I started setting goals I want to achieve in the future. Since the school started, I continue trying to reach my goals of last year and building new ones because everyone wants something and always we are trying to make our goals come true; not all my goals would come true because, in some cases, we set goals we know we can´t reach but we just love trying to reach them.
I found this semester to be really helpful in providing insight about my own body. I was not only able to learn about a new kind of exercise, but I was able to focus on specific areas that I need to strengthen in order to improve upon my dancing. My pre-class workouts allowed me to target areas in which I need to have a little more mental thought to engage them properly in class. Taking the time for myself to warm up my body with the workouts allowed those muscle groups to be on my mindset throughout the class. Then, as I was going through class, it was easier for me to concentrate on other aspects of my dancing as well. Through this experience, I gained a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses in my body. Some of my strengths I identified include my core and my back. These are areas that always need improvement but there one of the stronger parts of my body that I do not always need constant mental effort in order to engage them during class. However, while my core overall is pretty strong, I need to work on my supporting side. My oblique muscles are an area
