Social psychology is the branch that studies how one’s behavior and attitudes changes with one’s interaction with the surroundings. It is simply a science that describes how and why we react towards different situations differently. Although movies are made mostly to entertain the audience, but some are intentionally made to make people understand the various psychological phenomenon working around us. One of such movies is the infamous Inside Out, an animated movie written by Pixar. Inside Out is the story of a girl Riley whose thought processes are controlled by five basic emotions which are portrayed as characters named Joy, Fear, Disgust, Sadness and Anger. Although the storyline is short, the movie basically depicts how the five characters …show more content…
Firstly, the movie starts off with describing different processes of the brain during the day and how memories are stored as core memories and temporary ones. As the movie shows, there are different personality islands which corresponds to different parts of her life all being part of her core memory and each day, new memories are sent to and stored on those Islands that keep them intact and working. These islands are a very realistic depiction of the concept Self-Schemas. Self-Schemas is a socio-psychological concept which stands for the different aspects of an individual’s personality. As the memories become stable and long-lasting, they integrate together to form a particular aspect of your personality and it becomes a template through which you can describe yourself. Self-Schemas are a very important part of your life and if any one of which is removed hypothetically can lead to a huge gap in your personality just like removing a piece of puzzle would make the picture incomplete and confused. So basically, as we saw in the movie, the different islands of personality were basically self-schemas of herself. For example, the Island of family guided her attitudes towards her family and the memories made with her family were the driving force
Psychology comprises of two words originally used by the ‘Greeks’, ‘psyche’, defining the mind, soul or spirit and lastly ‘logos’ being study. Both words define together the ‘study of the mind’. Psychology perspectives evaluate the normal and abnormal behaviour and how persons’ deal with different concepts of issues and problems. The birth of psychology was in December of 1879, at Germanys University of Leipzig (Myers, 2014, p.2). In 1960, Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Titchener defines psychology as “the science of mental health” (Myers, 2014, p.4). However, two provocative American psychologists, John Watson and B.F Skinner, redefined psychology in 1920. They redefined psychology as “the scientific study of observable behavior” (Myers, 2014, p.4). The problem arose when psychologists realized people could not observe feeling or thought so they needed to come up with a new definition for psychology. We define psychology today as “the science of behavior and mental processes” (Myers, 2014, p.4). Psychology includes many subfields such as human development, social behavior,
Memory is the process of retaining information over a period of time, such as life. The movie Inside Out gives a great visual representation of how our memory works and how important it is. The movie is based on a young girl named Riley that gets over life’s toughest obstacles with the help of her emotions; joy, sadness, disgust, fear, and anger. These emotions represent her inner thoughts and the voice that we all hear in our head, which is our inner speech. As she, Riley, encounters obstacles her emotions are left with the decision on how to react to the situation at hand.
The Pixar film, Inside Out begins with a girl named Riley. She grows up in a small town in Minnesota and then has to move to the city of San Francisco. The viewers follow Riley’s journey in her head. Throughout the movie, we see the changes in Riley’s mind through the actions of the emotions and events that occur. Inside Out is a film that accurately depicts many aspects of psychology. One of which is developmental psychology. Secondly, the film also illustrates the conversion from short term to long term memory. The film also demonstrates a hypothesis on the conversion from short term memory to long term memory, as well as giving the audience an understanding of what depression is. Finally, it presents the stress and depression that can occur in children from major life events, such as moving long distances, and maybe even a bit of an example as to what a parent can do to relieve stress from major life events for their child.
Social Psychology is the scientific study of how we influence, affect, and relate to one another. Social psychology is studied to see how the influence of others can impact how we act. This can be seen in many aspects in life. Most specifically, social psychology can be seen in movies. Recently, I have viewed the movie Shrek which was released in 2001. Shrek is a kid’s movie about an ogre named Shrek who rescues a princess from a castle for Lord Farquaad in order to regain his swamp and privacy. During this process, however, Shrek falls in love with the princess and discovers a secret about her. While watching Shrek, I have noticed that many theories and concepts from social psychology were apparent in the film.

At first glance, Pixar’s Inside Out seems to be your standard coming of age film. The film follows an 11-year-old girl, Riley who is forced to make a move from Minnesota to San Francisco with her parents. However, a deeper look at the film reveals how accurate it is to developmental psychology. The center of the story isn’t Riley and her family, but Riley’s primary emotions –Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust. The five emotions are personified as characters that control her mind as she transitions from childhood to adolescence and deals with the challenge of adjusting to a new place. Inside Out uses Riley and her emotions function as a demonstration of the relationship between emotion and cognition. In doing so, the film reveals several important questions about developmental psychology. Such as, how do emotions color our memories of the past and what is
A personality is a combination of various attributes that belong to a single person. Each one has its own unique qualities and traits that create an individual that is different from any other human being. How this individuality is formed depends on the environment that a person has lived through and their experiences. Alison Bechdel grew up in a home with a father who alienated himself from his family so that he could conceal a dark secret from his life. Nevertheless, Bechdel was able to take from her past so that she could become a strong and independent women who kept true to who she was.
Not many children’s movies show children how the brain develops, stores memories and works in day to day life, but Inside Out does just that. Within this hour and a half movie the psychology topics of long term memory, short term memory, emotions, and development is all include. Although it is very clear Inside Out indulges on these psychological topics throughout the movie, memory and emotions take the spotlight. Developmental psychology may not be as obvious, but is still in several of the scenes in Inside Out.
There is great reward in the study of psychology; the study of the Homo sapiens species. Their minds that include intellect, intelligence, habits and behavior rationalizing just as the quote at the beginning advocates—the entire world, history and future, revolves around them. Psychology, not limited to contemporary, “is a rich and varied subject that can simulate theoretical questions while at the same time offering practical application in almost all areas of everyday life” (Cherry). This is the gift that Leon Festinger was born with in New York City on May 8th, 1919. From there, he would go on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from City College of New York in 1939 (Cherry).
