Recommended: My senior project
My senior project was creating blankets for the elderly at Bridgeview Estates. I made 10 total blankets, five for men and five for women, and took them into the nurses on Christmas Eve. Once the nurses had the blankets they decided who would be in most need of the blankets and gave them out on Christmas Day. In total, I spent 12 and a half hours creating the blankets, and another 10 hours and 45 minutes completing my job shadowing. My beginning date was on August 6th with a completion date of December 24th. The materials that I used were pieces of fleece blankets with scissors. The three things I learned from this project were: procrastinating makes things worse, some elderly are not often visited by their families, and being a nurse can …show more content…
In the end I chose mental health as my topic because I felt that I would do well on that because of my prior knowledge of the subject. However, I ended up learning a few things along the way. First off, I learned that there are more than one type of ADD, which really surprised me. Many of the types were similar though they were all different; it gave me a new perspective on the subject. Another thing I learned was that there are several learning disabilities and several of the seemingly normal kids suffer with some form of one or another. The third thing I learned was that there is more than one type of OCD. This, much like ADD, really surprised me because when you hear the term OCD you had a specific image in your head and to find out that term encompasses more than what I imagined was a surprise because I was never taught about those differences.
Through my job shadowing experiences I learned that getting a job a different places can be difficult, but once you do find one job and are accepted the challenge does not end. You have to keep fighting for that job and, in a sense, you have to continuously prove yourself. Also I learned that even the smallest of jobs in the nursing field could have a major impact. At Bridgeview Estates, the majority of floor care nurses only have minimal knowledge of the field and yet, without those with minimal knowledge, the residents would be missing essential parts of their
This job shadow taught me what I want to work for in the future. The part of the hospital I want to work in is the more fast paced part. Also that the nursing part of the hospital is intriguing to me and that is a profession that I am taking seriously for my future. I am extremely appreciative of the opportunity of getting to job
The first learning outcome in which I would like to discuss is writing. Writing effectively for rhetorical situations while working on my discourse community paper about Kappa Delta Sorority is perhaps one of the areas I found myself struggling the most in. This is because I consistently got stuck when making sure the paper had a logical flow within each paragraph and keeping
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many would mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians, support staff.
I have really enjoyed doing the research for this project. Mental illnesses are something that I have been really fascinated in, and by writing about several of these illnesses I have learned quite a bit. I never realized that some of these mental illnesses could be so similar yet affect their lives so differently. Many people could not live a happy life if it was not for the help of their loved ones, and the doctors that make their treatments available.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Registered Nursing is listed among the top occupations in terms of job growth through 2022, with the demand increasing at least 19% by the year 2022 (2012). Particularly in the past decade, there is a serious shortage in the number of nurses to fill the vast amount of open positions available. Why is there such a shortage in the nursing profession, and is the nursing shortage real in this type of economy? Unexpectedly, there are many unemployed nurses today, struggling to find employment. An MPR news article by Annie Baxter stated that she had interviewed many unemployed nurses that claim the shortage is just a myth. She goes on to say “as the recession hit, people used health care less, promoting hospitals to hire fewer nurses” (2012). This information couldn’t be further from the truth. The health care industry is at an all-time high right now and there are a plethora of nursing opportunities out there. The nursing shortage is very real, and the misconception lies in the fact that hospitals are requiring a higher level of education than previously. You might ask, if there is such a shortage, why would they be more selective in their criteria? Due to the shortage, nurses are being forced to be more responsible in their work, more independent, work longer hours, and manage an unfavorable amount of patients at a time. This demanding work is requiring hospitals to become more selective in the types of nurses they hire (Aiken L.H., 2011). In this presentation, I will thoroughly explain these growing issues, how the unavailability of a nursing education is the main reason there is a global nursing shortage today, and voice m...
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
As the nursing career is expected to grow, several job openings are expected in the next ten years. These several job openings will increase job security. Also, their career has flexible schedules. Basically meaning a nurse “can constantly rotate what days he or she works or just set a schedule so he or she may have a four day weekend” (1 Registered). Because nurses manage patients on a daily basis treating and diagnosing, they are rewarded mentally and at times physically. “People are constantly thankful and truly realize the impact of a nurse” (1
From these module readings I have learned a great deal about the elderly population. From the article “A Profile of Older Americans” the elderly population will continue to grow a great deal as a result of the “baby boom” generation. The population over sixty five is expected to more than double to 82.3 million which is over twice the population size in 2000. As a nurse this will affect me because I will see the increase of elderly citizens in the hospital. The nursing feel will need to compensate to care for the increase. In that event we need to encourage the younger population to become health care providers such as nurses. We also need to encourage healthcare providers to work in the geriatric field.
Nursing is a promising career that offers many rewards to caring individuals. It is more than just a job that one attends day to day. Nursing is a career that kind people get in to because they are passionate about life and everything is has to offer. They care for people they have never met before in such a way that makes the patient feel comfortable and able to relax. In a way that makes it possible for the patient to recover from whatever they have encountered. If I am going to spend valuable time and money on education, I want to a job that I absolutely love. I want to have the satisfaction of knowing that my job is safe even when times are rough. Interviewing Jennifer H, a Registered Nurse at a local Banner facility really helped me get insight on what the position has to offer. I have encountered many people who are not passionate about their job and just show up for a paycheck; choosing a job in the medical field provides people with the same check, but also offers job security, advancement opportunities and numerous benefits for the employee and their famil...
In addition to taking this course, I have learned a lot about my personal health. The act of writing this essay has helped me see the work I have been doing to change my life. Also, taking this course has helped me understand that we must take care of ourselves physically and mentally while we age to live a happier life.
By completing my senior project, I have realized just how much I have changed and grown from the time I was a freshman. From the shy, awkward girl I was, I have grown into a mature, responsible adult that can take charge. This project has made me realize that I am strong and capable of whatever task I put my mind to. Furthermore, the impact of this project will indubitably help me in my future career. I plan on going into the business/marketing industry and this project has helped me this respect. I was able to successfully find ways to promote and advertise my clinic. In addition, I learned how to become a good public speaker, communicator, and leader. These skills will help me every day, whether it be interviewing for a job position, spreading my ideas, or taking charge on a project.
I chose the topic I did because I was intrigued on how students who aren’t able to use the full ability of their legs, are able to participate in the Pacer Test. This test is a running test that focuses on the child's cardio ability, and has them run back and forth from each side of the gymnasium. Or how children without motion in their arms are able to participate in the pull up test, or even a game of basketball. I was specifically drawn to this topic because my dad recently broke his ankle and is currently on crutches. When choosing a topic, I thought of him and was curious as to what he would be doing in gym class right now if he were in grade school.
What lessons did you learn? Throughout this interview, I learned how important being around other people is to older adults. It is important to make sure older adults have the ability to continue to be part of a community even if they lose the ability to leave their home on their own. They
I choose the topic of schizophrenia because I saw what it can do to a person and I wanted to learn more about it. My friend’s uncle had schizophrenia he had trouble recalling most information. He was also very paranoid he thought people were always out. It was over simple things when he heard people whispering he thought they were planning to do something to him, when he heard others laugh they were planning something. To just wonder how that feels to not remember everything, and that the world you’re living is against you that’s why I choose schizophrenia.
The topic that I choose is mental health education for teenagers in school. Mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. In schools we have classes focusing upon the physical and educational well-being of students but has ignored the mental well-being. The lack of mental health education results in people not knowing how to properly interact with mental illness both in others and with themselves. Not only is the knowledge of how to deal with mental illness an issue but the stigmatization that has derived from the lack of understanding creates a negative environment in confronting these illnesses.
