Throughout the program, I have been thrilled and excited to integrate and be a part of the Frontier community. The warm welcome from the Frontier staff was exceptional which made me feel welcomed. Although the week felt stressful on arrival to campus, I deeply felt Frontier was the right place to be. I felt a sense of belonging.

I felt that being able to see other students via hangout enhanced communication and built rapport. These activities allowed me to identify commonalities, share information, and created a sense of belonging. I enjoyed the small group of students which supported a productive and participatory learning environment. Even though some of the students live miles away from each other, I felt like I knew them. Clinical bound experience was exceptional, after interacting and sharing each other’s experiences and knowing we all have something in common was special. The nursing program and the CB was a good experience for me in that sense.
The faculty presence every step of the way to guide me throughout the program, the two-way communication between me and my instructors allowed me to structure personally meaningful knowledge. The interaction of the students and faculty via Google hangouts, discussion boards, and emails has made my learning community at Frontier phenomenal as I am actively engaged. The ability to see the compassionate faculty who works tirelessly to see me succeed as I achieve my goal is remarkable. Today’s clinical experience truly affected me in multiple ways. I went into this day with an open mind, and was pleased with the patients and the way I was able to conduct myself. This clinical affected me because throughout the day I felt that I experienced many emotions. A few times during my day I did have to fight back tears. I felt I had this emotion because some of the individuals expressed how they wanted to get better in order to get home to their families.
This program is a continuation of schooling and clinicals in a safe and beneficial way. The precepted weeks help to become comfortable with the floor and equipment. All the while, there is someone there to support my growth and development. I think the guidance provided is not only helpful for new graduates, but also a smart move for the hospital. Change can be hard for nurses that have been working on a floor for a while, and this program allows a smooth integration of new nurses without the frustration of having to help a new grad with every little
It was sometimes difficult to meet with other students to discuss group assignment or to study because of different time zones. I have not been able to join the PRIDE diversity impact program which is a great way to connect with others. At the beginning of the program I felt isolated. Nevertheless, as time went by and with better time management, my interaction with fellow learners became easier and more frequent. I am happy for the opportunity and the flexibility offered by this program to improve my professional development.
After meeting with our patient twice, I believe we have set into place a relationship where the patient is very open to us about her health. This is helpful for my partner and I as an open and honest patient is beneficial as we assist them in their health. Goals for next semester include reducing our patient’s blood sugar as well as reducing our patient’s fibromyalgia pain. Our patient has expressed to us that her glucose is high but she is ok with the high number as long as she is feeling relatively healthy. We hope to give practical ways to reduce blood sugar throughout next semester so hopefully we can reduce that number by semester’s end. Our patient is going to see her physician soon, so we hope to get an update on the patient’s fibromyalgia
. It allows the students to build their competence in performing clinical skills and to be ready for clinical practice, in a safe, non-risky environment.
Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
“Lifelong learning is attitudinal; that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors” (Geinare, p. 7, 2012). Staying up with current practices and the evolving changes in health care there will always be opportunities to learn and to grown both professionally and personally. It is essential for nurses to maintain their competences within the basics of nurses as well as their specialty. Maintaining flexibility in the approach to teach others such as students, peers, and other clinical staff educators must meet the diverse needs to accommodate everyone. Within the past four years I have be able to accomplish goals that felt impossible to reach. Keeping positive people, a good attitude, and believe in myself have all contributes to my success which I will continue over the course of my career as a Nurse Educator. When I was a freshman in college, I started my first semester with four basic classes: English, algebra, chemistry, and developmental psychology. Back then I did not see the significance of those classes other than the fact that I had to take them to meet general education requirements. I was aware that the purpose of general education was to create a well-rounded student with a variety of skills and knowledge, but I did not understand why a nurse would need to know how to write a five page paper on the Arab Spring. Fast forward to my last semester of college and more importantly, nursing school, where for the first time I am realizing how important those courses were for my nursing school career. One of the most recent examples that come to mind where an Arts and Sciences course demonstrated its importance was during my pediatric rotation. My classmates and I were rounding with the instructor and were discussing the importance of being advocates for children. During that conversation it was mentioned that frequently the general public’s knowledge about the body goes as far as a high school biology class. The wound that I observed at clinical was a diabetic ulcer. It was located on the patient’s left hallux. The main factors that placed the patient at risk for developing this ulcer was diabetes mellitus and having a history for smoking for 30 consecutive years. The patient stated that his history of diabetes and smoking has led to him having poor circulation in his legs and feet. Another factor that could have influenced the development of his ulcer is immobility due to an amputation.
The final semester of nursing school is most likely the most challenging yet exciting and enlightening time for most students. The peer observation with the second year student was an amazing experience. I as a freshman student had the opportunity to assist the senior and to observe how she performed her competencies. Also, I witness how the senior used her beginner’s knowledge to implement the therapeutic services and the preventive education to the patient. The course Psychology 361: Introduction to Clinical Psychology served as an introduction to the profession and personal life of clinical psychologists. We discussed the ethical and legal issues, the importance of the client-therapist relationship, the rights and responsibilities of the client and the therapist and the different types of therapy within this field of practice. However, after evaluating these concepts in depth, I have come to find some of the material surprising, interesting and difficult to understand. After recognizing my interests and conflicts within clinical psychology, I was able to evaluate myself and determine this profession would not suit me as an individual.
