They came together to make a change, the only other option that they had was to live day by day struggling to survive. This other option would probably cause numerous deaths amongst the French due to malnourishment, disease, and other medical complications. The desperation and need to survive by the French citizens is what empowered them and showed us that unity and leadership amongst regular citizens can start a powerful movement.
