Transitioning from a clinical nurse to an academic nurse educator is a big step, and one that must be taken with purpose and intent. To begin this process a self-evaluation is an advantageous start. Self-evaluation begins with reflecting on one’s practice and current knowledge and examining areas of strengths and areas that need improvement. This process may be uncomfortable as weaknesses are exposed, however when put into the spirit of self-improvement, opportunities for further education and experience can be realized (Bulman, Lathean, & Gobbi, 2014). According to Ransburg & Childress (2012), “accurately assessing skill acquisition will also assist nurse educators in designing personal professional development plans” (p.312). This category relates to how a nurse educator aids the student in developing the values and beliefs that are required to fulfilling the role of a professional nurse (National League for Nursing, n.d.). Similar to the first competency, the nurse educator will need to assess the needs of the learner, such as their learning style, identify needs of diverse student populations, assist the learner in developing professional goals, ensure cogitative, psychomotor skills, and affective learning takes place, and provide feedback to the learner (Caputi, 2015). To improve this competency a developmental plan would include to take a course in dealing with incivility in the classroom and creating improved interpersonal interactions. Additionally, reviewing and working through real world case studies would be beneficial.
The third competency was also a weaker point, missing two of nine questions. This competency focuses on assessment and evaluation of the student in the clinical, classroom and laboratory setting (National League for Nursing, n.d.). In this area the two questions that were missed were directed related to the, item discrimination ratio (IDR) and the point biserial correlation coefficient (PBCC). The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. Senior nursing students will complete a QSEN weekly clinical journal requirement learn how to self-assess their progress toward demonstrating these nationally-based competencies. An expert in the field, Dr. Cynthia Cark has created a comprehensive civility curriculum for new students entering the nursing field, which provides these students with core concepts including respect, professionalism, and ethical conduct (Nickitas, 2014, p. 308). Additionally, to prepare for the practice setting, they learn skills in the classroom and simulation labs on how to deal with incivility (Nickitas, 2014, p. 308). This piece of work will be based on the pre-assessment process that patients go through on arrival to an endoscopy unit in which I was placed in during my second year studying Adult diploma Nursing. I will explore one patient’s holistic needs, identifying the priorities of care that the patient requires; I will then highlight a particular priority and give a rational behind this. During an admission I completed under the supervision of my mentor I was pre-assessing a 37 year old lady who had arrived to the unit for an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. During the pre-assessment it was important that a holistic assessment is performed as every patient is an individual with unique care needs as the patient outline in this piece of work has learning disabilities it was imperative to identify any barriers with communication (Nursing standards 2006).
It prepares a novice to be able to perform basic skills throughout their career. Learning is related in the classroom by simulation labs and clinical instructors. Educators consider nursing education to be serious. Their role in preparing nursing students is to convey safe practice for patients. They focus on educating students to learn the knowledge of essential care for different patients. Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.

Your likes, dislikes, behaviors, attitudes and habits can be found during this process. You can use the discoveries to your advantage by accepting or changing strengths and weaknesses.
