Self-Assessment Commentary Looking back, at the beginning of the course, I desperately desired to sharpen my writing skills to a great extent. The aspects I craved for improvement were to write essays more smoothly, to come up with suitable examples to reinforce my standpoints, and to convince readers through my essays. My plan to advance the writing skills was to read good English articles, to join writing workshops, and to go over academic materials. However, I only achieved one goal this semester, which is reading academics materials. Inefficient time management is the factor which makes me not be able to accomplish the other two goals. I could have spared more time on reading good essays. Time management will benefit in not only my writing skills but also other aspects in life such as having a regular routine. As for …show more content…
During this semester, I felt I recognized too few words as well as synonyms. I repeated the same word in an article instead of changing to other synonyms. The reason behind it was lack of reading. I will definitely be faced with numerous chances to write articles in the future, so I need to work on the vocabulary part right now to avert the same situation from happening. To come up with appropriate examples was an obstacle for me in writing as well. I lacked much reading, especially in academic materials; accordingly, thinking about proper examples was tough for me. To prepare my next academic writing assignment, I will stick to my previous plan, which is to read more high-quality articles, to join writing workshops, and to go over academic materials. To tackle my problems, I will self learn by using English proficiency test materials. The reason is that universal English tests have included mainly five aspects of English, which includes vocabulary and writing. Learning from these materials is both effective and efficient in improving my overall English
After reading our mentors notes and analyzing what we have learned through this term, I have read all assignments that were submitted before our midterm exam. This gave me chance to follow up with how I advanced my writing skills from the beginning. As it was interesting to see how I can point out the missing qualities of these essays, it was nice to see our mentor’s notes justifying my points.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
In the course of this semester of writing, I grew more than I ever had in my ability to write well. I remember on the first day of class several other students were talking about how hard this writing professor is. I was a bit worried and even thought about switching to an easy professor for a guarantee A so I can get a 4.0. Now, I am grateful that I chose to decide to work hard for a 4.0 instead. Even though I may not get it, I am still glad I stayed because for once, I learned and became a better writer. I can see that my knowledge of conventions definitely improved from last semester. I really loved the feedback for my assignments, since it allows me to realize what I need to improve on and what I should keep doing. Unlike the previous semester, the writing professor only told us our grade on the very first assignment after two months. There were no feedback on how I could improve either, so I had no idea if I was having trouble with anything. Prior to this course, I always had trouble writing sentences and organizing them in such a way that flows and delivers my idea well. I also rarely outline or plan out how I will write a paper too, and even when I did, it was very vague. Out of the five learning outcomes, I grew the most in rhetoric knowledge and writing process from the reading responses and 4 assignment.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
This assessment score surprised me for I feel that I am very tolerant and adapt well to change, but maybe, as I get older, I resistance change because I have found principles and ideas that work well to achieve success and see change as only undermining what is already working (McShane & Von Glinow, 2016, p. 429). McShane & Von Glinow (2016, p. 428) says that “constructive communication” can overcome resistance. This statement is directed at management, but I plan on using this same advice to overcome my own resistance to change from management. Changes are occurring in my department and some role realignment is going to take place, as this occurs, I agree with McShane & Von Glinow (2016, p. 434) that this change will cause me additional stress, of course, now that I know this I can actions to prevent it. An article written by John MacArthur’s says that the Apostle Paul when faced with pressure still reserved “room in his heart to feel the anxiety of other” (MacArthur, 2012), so when thinking of change, instead of just seeing it as something that is stressing me out, I need to realize that others are probably going thought the same emotions and symptomize with them other, for MacArthur also says that, “Anyone who knows and loves Jesus Christ is capable of handling pressure like that” (MacArthur, 2012). I also need to remember that God is in control and no matter what changes occur God will see me through it (Matthew 6:26). By managing change better, will make me a
This paper examines both my strengths and weaknesses upon completion of a Competing Values Skills profile. Personal and corporate self-evaluation can help managers diagnose their roles and skills, identify strengths and weaknesses, and develop action plans for improvement breakthroughs (Belasen, 2000, p. 59). First, I will discuss my current skill set that was identified through self-assessment. Next, I will discuss the necessary development plan needed to remedy particular deficiencies and finally, I will discuss how this CVF profile broadened my thinking and how with this information, I can elevate my value and placement in my workplace.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
During my initial self-evaluation and assessment of me as a perspective counselor, self- awareness was an essential aspect of becoming an effective counselor. I am aware of certain things that can prevent me from becoming a competent counselor such as being unaware of my strengths and weaknesses. As a current community support worker, I have already had the opportunity to work with individuals who require different levels of support. Providing assistance to the specific population has given me the chance to utilize my communication skills. My work experience has also allowed me to be more self-aware, and open minded. After taking the techniques of counseling class I am more than confident that I have grown professionally since the beginning
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Throughout this essay, I will discuss my failures, my successes, my overall performance in the class, and my skill development skills.
For this project, I was assigned the role as the researcher and I covered Section 1: Overview/ Analysis and Section 2: Research. I responded to all text messages in a timely manner. I completed my assigned tasks in a timely manner. I contributed ideas to the project whenever I could. I assisted Gladys with the editing of the Final paper.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
This English class has prepared me not only for academic writing, but also for writing in my future career. I will continue to practice my writing skills by reading and writing more papers. Based on my collection of essays in this portfolio, I am confident that I can pass the class and receive Clear
Aptitude plays an important role in learning. If you have it, the job becomes simple. If you don’t, the final outcome is always doubtful. Some tasks, like playing a musical instrument, require a very high degree of aptitude. The average person would face great difficulty in learning such a vocation. Other, more mundane but crucial ones, like driving a car, cooking or writing can be learnt by most people with a reasonable level through training. English composition was never my choice subject and essay writing was not exactly the most joyful assignment at the high school but there were indicators that writing skills would play a crucial role in my future life, irrespective of which career I chose. Take, for example, Anthony Balderrama’s advice. “We spend more time writing in our professional and personal lives than we probably imagined we would back in school. What you may not realize is that these written exchanges can boost your career or hinder it, depending on how you treat them.”(Balderamma, 2009). Taking up Foundations of Academic Writing (FAW) I and II at the university was, therefore, a carefully thought out decision. The FAW syllabus tackles different aspects of academic writing in a systematic way. There is measured emphasis on different genres of academic writing, and there is lots of repetition. As a result, slowly but surely, change starts to happen. Now, as the course reaches the final stages, I can observe these changes in the quality of my writing and overall understanding of the subject. Writing an essay is no more the ordeal that it used to be in the high school.
Self assessment is a process in which you examine yourself in attempt to discover and learn more about yourself. Your likes, dislikes, behaviors, attitudes and habits can be found during this process. You can use the discoveries to your advantage by accepting or changing strengths and weaknesses. I plan on using this course to enhance my personal skills to become a better student and find success in earning my Bachelor of Arts degree at Ashford University in Social Science. Self Assessment is the first step in my successful future.
Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
