The Little Rock Nine was a group of African-American students who enrolled in Little Rock Central High, a previously segregated school. On September 4, 1957, the first day of school, Governor Orval Faubus of Arkansas called in the National Guard to keep the black students out (defying the federal government). The nine had made plans to go to the school together, but Elizabeth Eckford had not gotten the message. The white mobs would have killed her if one of the women had not led her away to a near by bus stop. Calling the mob’s actions ‘disgraceful’, President Eisenhower called out the 101st Airborne division to escort the children into the school. Throughout the American South, of many Negro’s childhood, the system of segregation determined the patterns of life. Blacks attended separate schools from whites, were barred from pools and parks where whites swam and played, from cafes and hotels where whites ate and slept. On sidewalks, they were expected to step aside for whites. It took a brave person to challenge this system, when those that did suffered a white storm of rancour. Affronting this hatred, with assistance from the Federal Government, were nine courageous school children, permitted into the 1957/8 school year at Little Rock Central High. The unofficial leader of this band of students was Ernest Green.
Melba begins her story talking about her early childhood and the prejudice she experienced in Little Rock, Arkansas. On May 17, 1954, when she was twelve, the Supreme Court ruled in the Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka Kansas case. This made it illegal to have separate schools for blacks and whites. The Fourteenth Amendment was adopted on July 9, 1868. That, by no means meant the end of the struggle, it was only the beginning. In Little Rock, Arkansas at the time that Brown v Board of Education passed, black and white relationships were under the Jim Crow laws. All public facilities were segregated and clearly not equal. The Jim Crow Laws were the basis of everyday interactions between black and white people in the south. Melba Beals and the other “Little Rock Nine” braving the walk towards the doors of Central High School and several others landmark events spearhead the demise of these laws.
Board of Education, Melba Pattillo Beals will always be known as one of the first black students to go to a white school. Her race have hoped of this for years now, and the Little Rock Nine had made it with the support of the general army. People went as far as to hurt them, resulting as far for the government to support nine black students. This is what it takes to charge forward, or to hit a home run like Jackie Robinson.
The Little Rock Nine were part of a broad movement for civil rights that started in 1865 with the 13th amendment and still continues today. Many prominent figures emerged at the forefront of the cause such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, but the Little Rock Nine advanced civil rights in education by beginning the effort to desegregate schools. Their legacy still lives on as one of bravery and perseverance.
In the 1930’s a plethora of prejudiced persons are present amidst the prominent Scottsboro trials, a seven-year-long case consisting of false rape allegations made against nine black boys from Scottsboro. When citizens fail to acknowledge their own preconceived ideas and look past the prejudice present in society, justice cannot be served. In the Scottsboro case, the court of Alabama disregards the societal issues surrounding racial discrimination and endorses the guilty verdict and conviction of the nine African American boys. Eventually, a federal court ordered Central High School in Little Rock to begin admitting black students in 1957 in order to begin the state's process of desegregation. Melba saw this as the perfect opportunity to make a difference in her hometown. She was one of nine courageous students who decided to attend the all-white Central High School. Although all the students knew it would not be easy to be the first black students to integrate, it was a lot more strenuous and difficult than anyone of them had imagined.
Civil rights activist, Daisy Bates was at the core of the school desegregation catastrophe in Little Rock, Arkansas in September 1957. Bates used her position as president of a local Arkansas branch of the NAACP to strategically destroy the segregated school system. Her civil rights work involved changing the policies of the Arkansas Public School System that promoted segregation of school students, which in turn denied equality of educational resources and qualitative instruction to Arkansas’ Negro students. This fight for civil rights for students of color caused a fundamental shift in how the state educated its students both Black and White. Her plan halted the nation to expose the segregation in the Arkansas school district. Bates advocated for Black children to attend public schools that had been segregated arguing that the school system needed to be desegregated. Also, although Little Rock was seen as a success, as the President was behind the blacks, after the incident was over, Governor Faubus closed all schools in Little Rock until 1959 as he would prefer there to be no schools than desegregated schools. This shows that there was always a way for the whites to get around desegregation without much attention being paid to it.

The Little Rock Nine were nine African-American teenagers who sought to attend Little Rock Central High School in the Fall of 1957. The supreme court had ruled segregated schools unconstitutional in the 1954 Brown vs Board of Education case. A couple years later, nine African-American students began to try and attend segregated schools. This was both historic and tragic at the same time. Because of this, much violence broke out in the South.
Are black students better off in predominant black schools? Well, in the case of Brown vs. Board of Education, on May 17th, 1954, racial segregation in public schools was officially declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States of America. This declaration continued the efforts of racial equality among blacks and whites, but was in this change truly a step froward or one in the wrong direction. Some, like Ullin W. Leavell, would say that there is a need for redirection of eduction for young black children. Others like Du Bois would state “They are needed just so far as they are necessary for the proper education of the Negro race.” Unlike with race, this topic of discussion is not, black and white, there are gray areas that need to be discussed in order to reach any sort of clear conclusion. The first day of school for them was very difficult because there were so many people getting mad at them. Most of the people getting mad at them were the parents because they didn’t want African Americans to go to their kid’s school.
Topics of race and inequality are critical topics we continue to debate everyday in America. My research synthesis paper is about school segregation, and I wanted to identify how and why schools continue to be racially and socioeconomically segregated today. I will use these questions, as well as knowledge gained from scholarly articles, as a platform for my analysis of school segregation and its implications for students and communities. So I wanted to discover if integration still matters, do our schools need to be desegregated, and if not, then how can our schools become diverse and effective.
