Segregation in the U.S. has now been present for about sixty years, and it is still here. The only solution to this massive problem is desegregation, which this country needs in order to prosper. People need to know why segregation is bad for them and their country, the U.S, and here are the reasons why. Segregation needs to stop because, segregated education can affect this country’s future, it causes violent protests, and everyone needs to be treated equally no matter what color their skin is.

Mr. Kozol provides his own socially conscious and very informative view of the issues facing the children and educators in this poverty ravaged neighborhood. Those forces controlling public schools, Kozol points out, are the same ones perpetuating inequity and suffering elsewhere; pedagogic styles and shapes may change, but the basic parameters and purposes remain the same: desensitization, selective information, predetermined "options," indoctrination. In theory, the decision should have meant the end of school segregation, but in fact its legacy has proven far more muddled. While the principle of affirmative action under the trendy code word ''diversity'' has brought unparalleled integration into higher education, the military and corporate America, the sort of local school districts that Brown supposedly addressed have rarely become meaningfully integrated. In some respects, the black poor are more hopelessly concentrated in failing urban schools than ever, cut off not only from whites but from the flourishing black middle class. Kozol describes schools run almost like factories or prisons in grim detail. According to Kozol, US Schools are quite quickly becoming functionally segregated. Kozol lists the demographics of a slew of public schools in the states, named after prominent civil rights activists, whose classrooms are upwards of 97% black and Hispanic — in some cases despite being in neighborhoods that are predominantly white. It has been over 50 years since Brown vs. Board of Education. It is sad to read about the state of things today.
Unequal funding and lack of opportunities offering are restricted minority students to compete to white students. The school system is not independently separated from race and racism as people think. Race and racism are social illness that immediately need action in order to bring the best atmosphere and energy for educational system because schools are places for teaching and learning. Schools should not allow race and racism affect their spaces’ neutralization. Segregation was a terribly unfair law that lasted about a hundred years in the United States. A group of High school students (who striked for better educational conditions) were a big factor in ending segregation in the United States. Even though going on strike for better conditions may have negative impacts, African Americans were not treated equally in education because of segregation and the Jim Crow laws were so unfair and the black schools were in terrible condition compared to the whites’.
In conclusion, racial segregation provides a gateway for countless other forms of injustice. Blacks are forced to live in a world, in which poverty is an epidemic, infrastructure is inadequate, education is non-existent, families are torn apart, and crime and violence are everywhere. Segregation utilizes all of these factors within a certain area to isolate one group of people from another. This apartheid system refuses to acknowledge the rights of blacks as rightful citizens and forces them to endure the consequences of economic, political, and social oppression. That is unfair and unjust. It is ironic how Americans are the first criticize foreign countries, yet remain blind to their own faults. Until they can identify the problem, the United States of America will continue to struggle as a country.
The education gap between the north and the south has many roles in the African American community. The north has always been industrial while the south was agricultural, many of these children who was suppose to be attending school was helping on farms working and helping their parents throughout the day instead of getting an education. “The percentage of all schools with so called racial or socio-economic isolation grew from 9% to 16%” Today students still experience or has been a victim to social and racial differences. When segregation was abolished it allowed students to be in the same classroom together, be able to eat and go to the same bathrooms, also being taught by the same teacher. However many teachers failed to realized or wanted to teach these students based on the color of their skin, causing many students to drop out of school because of not being heard. The black community has a low rate of graduation rates in the south than the white community “In the last four years more than 69 percent of white louisiana males graduated making for a 16 point difference, while 59 percent of black louisiana males graduated” These school systems doesn’t care that they’re not being taught or graduation. The Brown v. Board of Education turned over the Plessy v. Ferguson case, as it was deemed unconstitutional. Unconstitutional, because separating children by race was fundamentally unequal and it violated the fourteenth amendment. This was a crucial historical event that made it possible for blacks and whites to attend school together and end segregation. At least that’s what was expected to happen. In the year of 2002-2003, Chicago was found that 87 percent of the public schools were black or Hispanic, and less than 10 percent were white (Kozol 405). In New York, 75 percent were either black or Hispanic. This indicated the opposite effect of what had been dealt with 30 years ago. Yet resegregation is still happening. It shows how deeply segregated minority students are in the poorest and most isolated areas of America. Furthermore, nothing has been done to alleviate it, because the major cities have no knowledge of this reality. In the past, it had been significant to the whole nation, but now it seems that they have turned a blind eye. On the other hand, there is a link between education, segregation and poverty. Minorities, compared to wealthy white Americans, cannot afford to send their children to private schools. This concept of segregation now impacts students that are becoming part of our society from different countries. They now are being caught up in the cycle of segregation based upon where they live. Where their family lives usually dictate the school boundaries and determines the school that they will attend.
This situation is similar to the U.S., where people have the chance to enter school depending on their zip code. With the voucher program, now students can choose schools even if it is public, charter, religious without a zip code, even though this idea did not go far, but it was a great reform. On May 21, Sheridan became the first school district in the South to announce its intention to integrate. The district’s plan to integrate in the fall semester quickly came to a halt. Within twenty-four hours, one hundred Sheridan residents met at the school and demanded that the board either change its decision or be replaced. The board quickly postponed integration pending further study. This taught white supremacist that desegregation would fail if they could get together groups to actively protest. Meanwhile, the Franklin County town of Charleston managed to refrain from a public announcement. On August 23, eleven blacks attended Charleston High School and became the first African-American students in the South to attend public school with whites. There was no incidents but the news only reached the public in mid-September, after integration had occurred in Fayetteville.(Deaf)
Forty-seven years ago the Civil Rights Act was passed to end racial discrimination in America. And later on the 24th Amendment to poll taxes, then the Voting Rights Act to allow every man to vote and not be discriminated against. Black Power, the Nation of Islam, and the Southern Christian Leadership conference were just some of the groups that tried to end segregation and promote the African American race. Although these groups did help end it, it still exists in today’s world and many studies have been done to prove it in the past couple of years.
Topics of race and inequality are critical topics we continue to debate everyday in America. My research synthesis paper is about school segregation, and I wanted to identify how and why schools continue to be racially and socioeconomically segregated today. I will use these questions, as well as knowledge gained from scholarly articles, as a platform for my analysis of school segregation and its implications for students and communities. So I wanted to discover if integration still matters, do our schools need to be desegregated, and if not, then how can our schools become diverse and effective. United States school systems have has a history of segregation. This segregation began with the passing of Jim Crow laws in the south in the late 1800’s. The influence of this practice was at first the slave culture of the southern states, and later was manifest as residential segregation and school choice programs.
