Even in matters of outwardly secular morality, religion plays such a hegemonic role that, in many instances, secular morality is inadvertently influenced by religious morality. It could even be said that religious morality is greatly influenced by secular morals and not the other way around. While it would be difficult to assess the genealogy of morality it would be safe to say that morality has a very strong connection with religious morality. Moreover, to evade the almost omnipresent influence of religious morality would be nearly impossible; this allows for the almost constant melding of the two making them almost indistinguishable. While certainly not all morality is based on religion, it has become such a force that morality can scarcely be discussed without religion in mind. So, in what aspect does religious morality and secular morality intersect to create this dimension?
It is said that “[e]very society needs the stability provided by a sense of sacred order” (Fasching and Dechant 16). This has been the prevailing thought since the dawn of man. The role of religion in shaping morality cannot be ignored because it has formed the ideas of right and wrong since man first created a mythology of creation; ever since it has been argued that morality could not even exist without religion to act as a basis. While this could be disputed it illustrates the point that religion and morality are almost inseparable even when discussing “secular morality”. “Secular morality” can very well be greatly influenced by “religious morality”, hence, creating a dimension that is inherently both at the same time. Secular morality cannot but help have elements of religious morality built into its very structure due to a multitude of factors. The two are very closely connected not only because of how the United States was formed but because of the largely religious population and how hegemonic Christianity is in terms of influence. This argument also depends on an almost unanswerable question of if morality is dependent on religion or if it only depends on human logic to dictate it. While it would seem that morality is independent of a religious foundation it does borrow liberally from its traditions but it is almost impossible to tell which begat which. Regardless, the two distinctly different moralities feed into one another, creating an exceptional type of morality that is uniquely both.

Morality and ethics have always been a large source of debate and contention between different factions of various interests, beliefs, and ideals due to its centrality and foundational role in society and civilization and incredible importance to everyday life and decision making. In many of these disputes religious belief, or a lack thereof, serves as an important driving force behind one or both sides of the argument. In the modern world, one of the bigger instances of this can be seen in the many debates between Atheistic and religious individuals about the implications of religious belief on morality. One of the most famous Atheists, Christopher Hitchens, asserts that religion is not only unnecessary for morality, but actually impedes it. In his work God is Not Great: Why Religion Poisons Everything, Christopher Hitchens challenges religious believers to “name an ethical statement or action, made or performed by a person of faith that could not have been made or performed by a non-believer”, and proudly states afterwards that many have made the attempt but no one has given him a satisfactory answer. However, the best response to this challenge is to point out the inherent flaws in his logic, the unfairness of his challenge, and the fact that Hitchens is asking the wrong question in the first place.

This debate took place in 2000, but is still relevant today due to the many conflicts going on in today’s society and how morally corrupt it is. By examining both sides of the debate, we can see that morality is in fact greatly needed but organized religion is not the only answer to the problem.
The role of religion in politics is a topic that has long been argued, and has contributed to the start of wars, schisms (both political and religious), and other forms of inter and intra-state conflict. This topic, as a result of its checkered past, has become quite controversial, with many different viewpoints. I believe that morality can depend on religion, but I also think that it does not have to depend on religion. I believe that people do not usually look at what is morally right or wrong on a daily basis. The people that do, it is rare. It all comes down to how a person was raised, taught, and their surroundings they grew up with or the people they grew up with.
