Recommended: The importance of wearing your seatbelt

Sliding off the road hanging over a cliff edge with a 40 feet drop down. Michelle Wheatley is 24 years old and if she wasn't wearing her seat belt she would have gone through the front windshield and down the cliff. I believe that people all over should wear seat belts when driving. Even though seat belt use has been proven to save lives, not everyone believes the use of seatbelts should be mandatory.They think this should be their decision and not be regulated by the government. “Statistics show that the fatality rates in car accidents are highest on rural roads in the states that don't make drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts.” I think these people are only thinking of themselves and not others. Children tend to follow their parents example. I think people should wear seat belts when driving. Three reasons I think people should wear seat belts is that seat belts help prevent injuries and reduce the risk of being ejected from the car. Secondly they help prevent families from losing their loved ones, and thirdly air bags are not useful and do not work correctly unless a seat belt is worn.
Seat belts help prevent injury when driving. Most car accidents happen when someone is drunk , texting on their phones, or driving too fast. An average of 35,000 people die every year in car accidents. Most of them died because they weren't wearing their seat belts. Some injuries that happen when you don't wear your seat belt are damage to the head, shoulder, stomach, chest, ribs, neck, and hips. Therefore I think it is a no brainer for people to choose to wear their seat belts every time they get in a car. Such a simple task as fastening a seat belt can save lives. Why would anyone risk their lives by not putting on a seat belt especially since most cars have seat belt alarms. 80% new cars have seat belt warnings to put on your seat belt and 66% of all cars have this feature. Many people put them on to stop the alarm. Also people have to think about their children and what they are teaching them. No parent wants to get a phone call to come to the morgue to identify their child because a seat belt wasn't being worn., By buckling up can save years of guilt. After all click it or ticket, it is against the law to drive without a seat belt.

    In North Carolina, the “Click It or Ticket” program was put into place in 1993 by former Governor Jim Hunt to increase safety belt and child safety use rates through stepped up enforcement of the state’s safety belt law. According to North Carolina’s safety belt law all drivers and front seat passengers over the age of 16 are required to wear safety belts. Children less than age 16 are covered under the North Carolina Child Restraint Law. This law requires that children must be buckled up no matter where they are seated in the vehicle. Violators of the safety belt law are issued tickets and are subject to a fine of $25 plus $50 court costs. These violations have been defined as “infractions” and are not entered on driving records. In addition to this, effective January 1, 2005, any child less than 8 years old or 80 pounds in weight must ride in a booster seat. Violations of this law will result in a $25 fine plus court costs as well as having 2 points placed against driver’s license. However, drivers cited for this violation of this law for a 5,6, or 7 year old will be able to have the charges dismissed if they present proof to the court that they have acquired an appropriate restraint for that child. Statistics have been gathered on safety belt use since this program began and has shown that seat belt use has increased from 65 percent to 84 percent. Safety features, including flashing caution lights, visors outside of the vehicle, and motorized stop signs and stop arms were all installed within the next 80 years to make the journey to and from school safer. Although many of these precautions were taken, many citizens believe that not enough action was taken to promote safety on school buses. Because a variety of school bus companies do not have a stance on whether seatbelts should be installed or not, the safety concerns mainly impact parents and school leaders.
