Janie’s search for reciprocal passion put her on a crazy ride throughout life. The reality that pursuing your dreams can be to the determinant of your failures. Janie was married twice in her life, first to Logan Killicks and second Johnny Taylor. A woman looks to marriage as a commitment of love and respect. With each relationship, Janie’s self-image changed for the worst. Her grandmother, Nanny advised Janie to marry Logan for financial reasons rather than love and respect. Logan cared for Janie financial, but she never got the love she yearned. Janie second husband Johnny Taylor had abuse her verbally, mentally and physically. Janie's search for unconditional, true, and fulfilling love played a major role in her being unhappy.
Janie’s grandmother Nanny wants the best for Janie in life. Nanny herself a former slave, has ambitious desires that Janie be better than her own daughter and herself. Their family cycle consists of being a single mother, abuse and the plight of struggling to maintain in the emancipation era. Nanny wants Janie to be better than her own mother and be a decent girl. Despite, Logan Kellicks being older Janie’s marriage to Logan Killicks was due her Nanny convincing her to marry him not about love. Logan had wealth and he owned 60 acres of land. However, with all that wealth Janie losses interest in Logan and she desires to leave him. Nonetheless, Logan tells Janie that if she leaves him she won’t have nobody to take care of her.
