When analyzing these two-architectural building one can see some similarities and differences that make each work of art unique. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the finest Asian art collections that has enlightened and strengthened my understanding in my personal art experience. The Museum itself is an artistic architectural structure that graces the entire block on 82nd Street in Manhattan. Entering inside, I sensed myself going back into an era, into a past where people traded ideas and learned from each other. It is a past, where I still find their works of yesteryears vividly within my grasp, to be remembered and shared as if their reflections of works were cast for the modern devoted learner.
Many of Frank Gehry’s early works reflect a refined manipulation of shapes and structures, whereby many of his buildings present distorted shapes or apparent structures. From the Guggenheim museum to the Walt Disney concert hall, Frank Gehry’s architecture is close to none. He cleverly plays with shapes and geometries. In this essay, I shall start with a brief analysis of Gehry’s house and the influences in the design of the house. I shall then analyze the extent to which Frank Lloyd Wright has inspired and influenced Gehry in the design of his house through a comparison with Frank Lloyd Wright’s Jacob’s house.

The St. Louis Art Museum is one of the United States most renowned art museums that is located in our very own St. Louis. It has over 30,000 pieces of exquisite art that I had the privilege to witness. While there, I mainly examined the art pieces that were modern art, since that is of what I have a good working knowledge. There is a wide range of art that I also got to witness including the sculptures and the museum itself. In the past year, they have recently installed a new sector of their establishment that has done nothing less than enhance the entire museum’s overall beauty. The St. Louis Art Museum, there are many beautiful works, but there were three special projects that caught my eye while I was there. The Contemporary art periods, Modern art periods, the American art periods, and the museum itself.
In all, both the Glasgow Art Building and the Goldman-Schwartz Art Building have a surprising number of similarities. Although they are located on two different continents, the styles are remarkably similar especially considering their function. Their similar goals to promote creativity by designing an open and free environment are perhaps, the most significant and interesting features of the structures. By comparing these features, it gives an indication of the serious dedication to art that has existed across the world regardless of history.

Located in Santa Monica, United States, Gehry Residence is considered as among the classic California iconic deconstructivist architectural works by the reason of its extraordinary form. Directly designed and renovated by the owner of the house during 1977 until 1978, Frank Gehry tried to explore his creativity on the use of material by wrapping outside of the house with a new exterior while still retaining the previous exterior design exist inside (1979,73). Consist of two floors; those existing house plans were designed in the linear form without any particular organization around it. Over the summer, I volunteered at Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine. The Brick Store Museum is filled with local artifacts from York County that date back to the 1800’s. People from across the country visit the museum. I had been interested in art history and the idea of working in a museum for quite some time prior to volunteering. I decided to volunteer to gain experience in the field I may want to study. I was able to collaborate with several incredible people and learn more about myself.
I like that the museum is located in Battery Park and it’s very convenient to get to and from the outside the architectural structure of the building is amazing. Inside the building itself is also a piece of artwork. The ceiling design is a beautiful; it almost looks like a church with many painting of ships and European explorers. Architecture is one of the most prestigious fields of knowledge and the most important expression of human interaction with the society and the environment in which it lives. Venturi (1966) remarked on the inevitable multi-functionality of spaces and thus, the necessity of multi-meaning structure for their corresponding architectural forms in his famous book titled “complexity and contradiction in architecture”. He believes that the plurality of the meaning and the functions may enhance the intensity of spatial positive ambiguity and result in architectural spaces liveliness. Accordingly, he criticized the attitude of the modern architects who follow the modernism common maxim (form following function and so the belief in having just one meaning) in their works (e.g. The Seagram building designed by Mies van der Rohe). Trying to define modern architecture was a problem that many architects struggled to explain. No one before had created what we now know as “modern” architecture. In the past architects were able to look into history to gain an inspiration for buildings however, this approach would not fit in this new age of the machine. Industrialization changed the way people thought. The Industrial Revolution allowed products to be produced on an industrial scale, allowing ordinary people access to goods that would have been otherwise not have been in their reach. Architecture was slow to adapt to industrialization and the industrial age brought new problems never seen before. One such of architecture’s main goals is to faithfully represent its time; this idea is known as Zeitgeist or “Spirit of the Age.” Since an age of the machine was a never before seen phenomenon, architects had to think slightly ahead of their time in order to keep up with the changes going on in society. Many architects such as Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies worked tirelessly to establish themselves as leaders in their field. They came up with ideas such as harmony between architecture and nature, and function over form. Ludwig Miles was one such architect who tried to cement his place in history through the creative use of concrete, steel and glass. Mies’s style was known to follow the saying “less is more.” One of his greatest known buildings is the Seagram Building. South African architecture is known for its influences from countries such as France and Germany which have contributed to the iconic international architectural landscape still present throughout the country today. One such example is the Sanlam Plaza by Theunissen and Jankowits architects in Bloemfontein. To try and understand or dissect Sanlam Plaza, more recently known as Bloem Plaza, one must first understand the true meaning and intention of post-modernism also referred to as second modernism. To further understand this movement and its impact in South Africa it will be compared to a Renaissance building which is very similar in façade, namely the Palazzo Chigi-Odescalchi.
