Sea Lions: Nature's Playful Aquatic Land Mammals
Introduction
Sea lions may look like sea creatures, but they also behave like terrestrial animals. Unlike whales, mammals that spend their entire lives in water, sea lions inhabit both the water and land throughout their lives. This aquatic land animal prefers the water for food, fun, and safety; while preferring the land for socializing, territory, and procreation. Being mammals, they share many behaviors common to humans and other mammals. Like mammals, they are born with the ability to walk on land shortly after birth. Surprisingly, they are not born with the ability to swim from birth, but need to be taught by their mothers. Like other mammals, they love to stay in social groups. During their reproductive season, females are dominated by aggressive males, that establish harems on the beaches. The relationship between females and their pups is characterized by affection, protection, nourishment, and instruction. In contrast to their limited terrestrial mobility, they can swim much better than they can walk. Unlike other land mammals, they have the ability to sleep in water . The most interesting thing is that they can sleep in water by using one part of their brain, while the other part of their brain is asleep ("Birds sleep with one eye open, half awake, study finds"). Clearly, sea lions have adapted well to a both an aquatic and land life.
Sea lions are parts of the seal family and in the class of Pinnipedia ("Sea lion"). They have external ear flaps and well-developed foreflippers and hind flippers ("Sea lion"). Unfortunately, some species of sea lions are declining and may become extinct so that it is time to save them by enacting laws for protecting them and encouraging people not to kill them for commercial reasons.

The California sea lion is a pinniped. A pinniped is a carnivorous aquatic mammal of the order Pinnipedia. Sea lions, like all other pinnipeds, have nostrils that they can voluntarily close while diving in the water. Inside the nose of a sea lion are bones called turbinate bones. When the sea lion inhales, these bones moisten and warm the air and stop inhaled particles from going into the trachea or the lungs. In the back of the sea lion’s nose, there are ethmoidal turbinate bones which give it its keen sense of smell. The nasal septum of a sea lion separates the nasal cavity into left and right halves.
A defining feature of the lionfish which everyone sees are the “18 venomous spines on its dorsal fin and its pelvic and anal fins, which are used for defense” as described in FACE OFF WITH THE ENEMY: LIONFISH by Special To The Citizen. Which is a neurotoxin that results in intense pain and swelling of one’s body. Fernando Simal, a marine hunter at STINAPA National Marine Park, found out the potency of their venom after his first hunt when being stung by the lionfish he caug...
Life in the early 1900’s wasn’t easy. Competition for jobs was at an all time high, especially in New York City. Immigrants were flooding in and needed to find work fast, even if that meant in the hot, overcrowded conditions of garment factories. Conditions were horrid and disaster was inevitable, and disaster did strike in March, 1911. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York set on fire, killing 146 workers. This is an important event in US history because it helped accomplish the tasks unions and strikes had tried to accomplish years earlier, It improved working conditions in factories nationwide and set new safety laws and regulations so that nothing as catastrophic would happen again. The workplace struggles became public after this fire, and the work industry would never remain the same again.
In 1849, Tubman thought that she would be sold so she decided to run away. She left at night on foot. Tubman got help from a white woman along the way. She followed the North Star at night. She finally got to Pennsylvania and then to Philadelphia. Once she got there she got a job and started saving money. The following year she returned and took her sister and her two children to freedom. She went back to the South to rescue her brother and two others. She went back a third time for her husband but he had married someone else. She wound up taking other slaves back with her.

sea otters are from the kingdom animalia. Sea otters are stouter and have large rib cages, smaller tails and muzzle than other species of otters. Yet sea otters posses the fine, dense fur coats characteristic of the Mustelidae. Their forefeet are small and dexterous with retractile claws and the flipper like hind feet are broad and webbed. Sea otters once was abundant along most coastal North pacific ocean. That was before fur traders hunted them for their thick ice, luxurious pelts. By the year 1900, sea otters were nearly extinct . Protected since 1911, alaska sea otters have made a comeback. There lifespan is 10-15 years. Great white sharks are the primary predator of sea otters and occasionally eaten by coyote so the predators that the
With this, their involvement was known as Black Dispatches. They were spies who assisted the Union army to be a step ahead of their enemies. One of the spies was a well-known figure and heroine in African American history named Harriet Tubman. Not only was she a spy, she was a nurse and cook for the Union. She made sure the army was taken care as far as physically. Tubman’s involvement in the Army was very significant. She was very familiar with land and knew the way to navigate for the Army. Tubman led the Union army to fight in South Carolina and freed more than 700 slaves in the
During the Civil War, Harriet Tubman became very prominent. She became a nurse, a scout, and a spy for the Union forces. As a nurse, Harriet found a root that helped cure the dysentery. Once again the soldiers began to call her Moses because she had saved many of their lives (Petry 220-224). While being involved in the Civil War, Harriet freed another seven hundred slaves. Harriet was said to be a well respected throughout the war. She received official commendations from many Union Army officials. Even though Harriet contributed a lot of time and hard work in the war efforts, she never received veterans’ benefits for any of of her painstaking work (Harriet par 3).
In conclusion, the two films that were shown were extremely persuasive, logical, and fact-based. Working conditions were and still are extremely harsh in sweatshops. After the 1911 Shirt Waist Fire many new laws and regulations were brought about. Such as, keeping exit door unlocked at all times and sprinklers in case of a fire. Alta Gracia is a movement that not only helps its people by treating them with respect and dignity, but also the buyers. When buying a t-shit or sweatshirt from Alta Gracia, you feel ecstatic. American Labor Unions and labor laws are still in the process of improving but it is up to us to enforce it.
A songbird's music can make anything turn to happiness. A mockingbird is something that does nothing to hurt anyone and symbolizes innocence and purity. In literature, characters can show innocence because they don’t harm anyone, they should help. These characters can represent a mockingbird while other characters can represent the evil. Harper Lee uses mockingbirds in her story to fight the evil in the story. All it does is sing for people so it would be a sin to kill it. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem Finch is the voice of innocence while Boo Radley doesn’t bother anybody and Tom Robinson is an innocent person, therefore they all represent Mockingbirds.
According to the Baptist view, baptism is a symbol of Jesus’s saving work. The Roman Catholic Church continues to teach that upon baptism a man then begins the process of regeneration, making it a necessary act to receive salvation. Lloyd Jones expresses that, “No sacrament is essential to salvation: if you say it is, you are aligning yourself with the Roman Catholics. Protestants have always said that while baptism and the Lord’s Supper are commands of the Lord, and we should therefore practice them, they are not essential. They do not add grace, they simply point to it and bring it to us in a special way.” (Lloyd-Jones 1998) When ...
The novel “The Hobbit”, or “There and back Again”, written by J.R.R. Tolkien tells the tale of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. This story has been adapted into three films, as well, by the filmmaker and screenwriter Peter Jackson. Throughout Jackson’s “The Hobbit” trilogy, he encompassed little of the most important components of the Tolkien’s literary edition. There were many differences between the two adaptations of the story. For instance, Jackson gave major roles to a variety of characters in the movies that never showed up or were only briefly mentioned in the book, characterized Bilbo and the dwarves much differently than in the book, and told the story through the use of a framed narrative. Overall, between the literary edition and filmic
Sacraments are the means, which Christians partake in the mystery of Christ through symbolic actions. Alister E. McGrath described the Sacraments as “Outward signs of the visible grace of God”. Consequently, since the beginning of Christianity, Christians have practiced many different sacraments. However, Western theologians limited the sacraments to include the ones that Christ instituted. As a result, the Sacrament of Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Orders and Matrimony became traditional in the West. Accordingly, Baptism and the Eucharist are highly esteemed because of references in the Gospel of Matthew, the Thirty-Nine articles of the Church of England and they are differentiated as the two Sacraments ordained by God. Although, the Sacraments vary from one denomination to the next the Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, Reformed, Wesleyan and Radical Reformers all practice the Sacraments of Baptism and, the Eucharist (Lord’s Supper). The Quakers and the Salvation Army are
Seals like to be alone and they’re usually spotted alone. Seals only go on land together to mate once a year so they can’t really socialize and make friends. Seals don’t talk either, they only make soft grunts. Sea lions on the other hand are very social. They travel in groups and they are very loud. Most groups have thousands of sea lions and they travel together. Sea lions depend on each other unlike seals because they’re independent.
The sea otters, especially the southern sea otters become hypothermic when oiled. What contributed to their vulnerability to oil is that their fur can lose insulative property, meaning they lost the ability to store things.
